Being Understood!

This was my favorite commercial on our TV this year. You know I recall feeling quite lost when I first went to Germany all those years ago. I recall feeling deaf and dumb because I did not speak the language or understand what was being said. People were kind and I did a lot of pantomime to get myself understood.

Over that summer I learned some German to speak it. I could order a meal, ask for the check, and most importantly, ask for a beer!

I did a lot of cooking, therefore I shopped each day. Thankfully there were a lot of pictures on cans, so when I wanted tomato sauce I could find it.

But just imagine that you are a child and it is Christmas in America. Your parents take you to see Santa and you get up to him, and and all you speak is German!

This commercial just touched my heart and made me recall when I was lucky enough to find someone who could speak English to me when I lived in Germany.

  1. love this commercial too!! kind of peeked my kids’ interest because they wanted to know what the boy asked for in German (a firetruck, a cell phone=handy) … I actually really would like to buy Rosetta Stone.

  2. I had not seen it, very cute! Happy New Year!
I decided to make this new recipe I wanted to try for Lamb Meatballs for tomorrow. They have ground lamp at BJ’s and I bought it a few weeks ago and put it in the freezer and have been waiting to make this.
This afternoon we are off with Miss Abby for First Night in Hartford. Loads of fun! Love YOU, Mel
