Mother’s Day

I’m usually not one of those people who gets too excited about Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, but on Sunday we met up with Mandy and her boyfriend M. and his parents. We went to a fabulous restaurant in Manchester, New Hampshire called Fratellos.

The food was delicious and while we ate, we talked and talked. It was warm and friendly and I felt like I had known M’s parents for a very long time.

Here are the ladies.

And here are the gentleman.

What you see in the picture above were the appetizers. They were awesome! An Antipasto, and Bruschetta with a side order of Calamari, that was cooked just right!

Soon our meals arrived. M. and his Dad had the Prime Rib, while Hubby had the Seafood Fra Diavolo. M.’s Mom had salmon, Mandy had Stuffed Haddock and I had Lobster Ravioli!

Doesn’t this look wonderful!

We talked and talked and soon the hostess came over and gently reminded us that they needed to prepare our table for the next seating. So reluctantly we said good-bye.

I hugged my daughter, this beautiful woman who made me a mother, and thanked my lucky stars. She is someone I would want to know, even if she wasn’t my daughter.

My Mother’s Day was complete, and I thank Mandy and M. once again for such a wonderful afternoon!

The Day After

The day after Easter found me exhausted! lol! I sat sipping my coffee on Monday morning, in a clean house, which was good, because I had very little ambition. I decided to take the day off. Do a little email writing, TV watching and Owl observing.

However, I was feeling guilty about the fact that dinner wasn’t up to my standards yesterday, so I decided to cook Hubby a nice rotisserie chicken for his dinner Monday night. The only thing was, he had a meeting at 6 o’clock, so I needed to have dinner on the table at 5 PM. That’s okay, just meant I had to start everything an hour and a half earlier than normal.

So, the dogs got fed at 4:15 (45 minutes early), and I worked on making a nice dinner after that. The chicken smelled great, and I made baked potatoes and eggplant roll-ups to go on the side.

The trees and shrubs are all budding and this is a problem for me. Seems I am allergic to this process and so I spend part of the last few days with severe allergy symptoms. Ahhhh-choooooo!

And my final piece of news is that Mandy’s cat, Maestro went to Rainbow Bridge over the weekend. He was a big, beautiful, Tuxedo cat with a heart of gold. I will miss him, and I know Mandy will too. I’m so sorry Sweetheart.

Rest in peace, dear Maestro.

Girls Day!

Saturday was girls day! I met up with my daughter, Mandy and my cousin Janet for a luncheon date and some serious girl chatting! I arrived first at my cousin’s condo and the two of us talked and I snuggled with her two dogs. I got this picture of her Shiba Inu, Wolf.

March 13 10 007

Wolf and I have a thing going. He loves me and I love him and his soft fur. Janet warned me about how much he sheds, and I was amazed at how much fur he left on my slacks! But I didn’t care. He was really sweet with me. So was Janet’s other dog, Max. Unfortunately I didn’t get a picture of him. I hope the one of me with the two dogs that Janet took comes out!

Janet took us to a Great restaurant in Lowell called “Life Alive”.

I had “The Innocent”, a fusion of delectably nutritious flavorings forming a savory sauce for steamed sweet corn, shredded carrots, broccoli and tamari roasted almonds all served over light and protein rich quinoa and short grain brown rice.

March 13 10 016

Mandy had the same but added some cashews, apples and carrots.

March 13 10 018

And Janet had “The Goddess”, a nurturing blend of smoked tofu, short grain brown rice, steamed carrots, beets, broccoli, and dark greens surrounded by our zesty Ginger Nama Shoyu dressing.

March 13 10 017

I also decided to order some tea. I was glancing over their teas when Something caught my eye.

March 13 10 009

Yerba Mate was recently written about on my friend Betty’s Blog, A Glimpse Into Midlife! Just two days ago she had written about this tea, so I knew I had to try it. It was wonderful and I really enjoyed it! Thanks for sharing the information about Yerba Mate, Betty!!

We ate our lunches and talked the entire time, we sipped our teas and enjoyed each others company. I really think we need to have these “Girls Days” more often. It was so much fun! Here I am with Mandy at the restaurant.

March 13 10 021

After lunch we went back to Janet’s and had some coffee and dessert. All too soon it was time to say goodbye, and head home. I hugged Mandy and Janet and said my good-byes.

March 13 10 024

The ride home was something else! It was pouring rain and windy. I drove slowly and carefully, and I made it home in good time.  However at one point the wind picked up and blew the car all over the place. It was just a bit scary!

Now I am sitting here with all three dachshunds asleep around me and Fritz at my feet. I am so happy to have such a loving family and loving pets too!

Happy Birthday, Mandy!!!

Today is my daughter, Amanda Mae’s birthday. When I look back at the birth of my first child, I think it was the most wonderful experience of my life. Feeling her grow inside of me, was incredible!  Of course back then we didn’t know before hand what sex the baby would be, I didn’t really care, but at the same time, I knew that inside my ever growing belly was a daughter. My daughter!

I remember being so very careful what I ate and drank while I was pregnant, and the only real craving I had was for Peanut M&M’s. I ate a ton of those, even though now, I don’t really like them too much. Can anyone figure out why we crave what we do?

And then my due date came and went, and went on and on and on. Finally the night before the doctor was going to induce me, I went into labor. The first four hours of labor was a piece of cake. I remember thinking that if this was labor, I’d have a baby every year! I won’t go into detail, but let’s just say the last four hours I was really glad they offered me an epidural!

And then, in a moment unlike any other in my life, there you were. You! Amanda Mae! My baby! It was love at first sight, in fact from the moment that you arrived for the next two years I’m sure I didn’t notice another child. There was only you. My beautiful, lovely baby.

I don’t tell you enough, but I love you more than words could ever say. I am also proud of the woman you have become. I only gave you a start. You took it from there and made yourself into the remarkable lady that you are now!

So happy birthday, my dearest daughter. You were the best Christmas present that I ever had or ever will have!

Love,

Mum

Airports and Hotels

We’re in Boston on Friday and fly out at 5:40 AM on Saturday! Please keep your fingers crossed that all goes well, that we make our flights and connections and that we get to San Juan in the early afternoon. We would like to get settled in our hotel.

Tonight we met Mandy and M for dinner. We had Mexican food and had a lot of fun talking and joking around.

Dec 11 09 004

Mandy and I escaped to the ladies room where I hoped to get a picture of us in better light. A really nice woman took this picture of us.

Dec 11 09 009

When I went to pick up my glasses they fell apart! Oh no! I have no replacements for them with me!! Lucky for me, the nice woman found the screw to hold the glasses together and all is well!

Jack and I modeled for this picture with his beer.

Dec 11 09 001

The evening ended quite early because We have to get up at 3:30 AM!

YUCK!

The Quality Inn. Then we would like to do a little touring around the island before having a nice dinner and then getting a good night sleep. On Sunday we would like to visit Arecibo Observatory to see their antenna. It is a large observatory and is maintained by Cornell University.

Later on Sunday, we will return our rental car and go to the ship and check in. We’ll visit our room and hopefully put things away. Then we will have a swim, get ready for dinner, before watching the ship depart at 11 PM from our deck. It’s a beautiful sight to watch the lights of Puerto Rico fade into the distance.

It’s not as important for us to get to bed early on Sunday because on Monday we will be in St Thomas, and we do not have any tours planned. We will sleep in, have breakfast when we wake and then walk around St Thomas after that. I am all for an easy first day!

Visits

Halloween was a fun day. My daughter, Mandy came up to visit bringing along her sister, Allyson. It was so nice to play with the puppies, run around outside, and have a nice lunch together, where we chatted about what Mandy and Allyson are up to. Mandy is busy with work and Allyson is busy at school, as this is her Senior Year of High School.

Later after they left, Emily arrived for a little visit with us. She played with each of the dogs. All 9 of them!

Here it was, Halloween and we did not have one Trick or Treat-er!

The clocks change tonight. Fall back!

Family, Friends,…… What A Weekend!

You will, perhaps notice the lateness that I am posting my Sunday entry on Dackel Princess. Why, you might ask, is this happening? Well, after two fabulous days of family and friend parties, I’m afraid that when I settled in for the night last night, I just felt like doing nothing but sleeping! So, no column was written. In fact I was nearly asleep in my bed, when suddenly I remembered this fact. I thought about going out and writing it then, but the dackels talked me out of it!

On Friday night, Mandy and M. came for a cookout. I made grilled chicken, and potato salad and fresh from our garden green beans. All I can say is YUMMY!

It was wonderful to see them, as it has been a while since we got together. I think it was Mother’s Day, and that was back in May. I am determined to get down to see Mandy for a lunch date once Greta has calved. (You should see her today! I swear she has baby cows in there, and not dackels!)

In any case, Mandy and M. took a bunch of pictures while here, and so you get to see us in all our summer happiness!

Me and my girl! I do not think it is possible to ever explain how much you love your kids. Mandy is just the light of my life and I adore her. Not just because I gave birth to this beauty, but because I love who she has become over the years. She works hard and she is such a nice and kind person.

Aug 14 006

This is M. and Mandy. Someday he will be less shy and allow me to publish his name. Let’s just say it’s Biblical.

Aug 14 010

I finally got a picture of M. Laughing! I love it!

Aug 14 012

Mandy was eating, when suddenly Fritz just helped himself. Totally unlike him!

Aug 14 018

And lastly, here is another shot of Mandy and me.

Aug 14 005

***************

Saturday, we were invited to a Lobster Fest. Now I am smart enough to RSVP quickly to such an event. It was so much fun, very laid back, the food was great (how can lobster not be?) and the company was a mix of people both warm and interesting.

Aug 15 006

Aug 15 009

The day was perfect except for the slightly high temperatures. But as you can see, we live near a lake, so once people got hot, they disappeared and went swimming.

Aug 15 037

We did have one scare. A beautiful Sheltie, who was a guest, took off toward the road and just barely got missed! Oh I wanted to die, and so did his owner, who was sitting next to me! Fortunately the car stopped and all was well!

Makenna with the Sheltie.

Aug 15 020

Soon the cooking started and lobster after lobster was fed into the pot!

Aug 15 021

Before you knew it, the salads, corn, prime rib and lobsters were laid out on the table!

Aug 15 026

Everyone immediately sat down and began to crack shells and go to town on their meal!

Aug 15 031

Our host was wearing a T-shirt that summed it all up! I am all for helping the farmers!

Aug 15 007

Our host, enjoying his birthday meal!

Aug 15 034

The lovely Makenna, whose parents hosted the event!

Aug 15 012

Soon the sun set and the bats came out, but even they could not handle the multitude of mosquito’s. It was getting late, so we said our good-byes and came back home, walking very carefully on the small path through the woods to our house.

What a great weekend!

Hello Big Belly!

I was talking to my cousin Janet on Thursday while I was photographing Greta and her enormous belly.

Aug 13 001

Janet suggested I put a tape measure around her waist, so I did. My only problem was that I couldn’t get it to stay put. Oh well, at least this gives you an idea of how her belly is popping out each day.

Aug 13 005

I took her outside in the afternoon and threw her ball around the back yard. She had so much fun running after it, and since I left the other dogs inside she had no competition for the ball.

I try to walk her around as much as I can, and then I let her rest. She also gets very tired now and needs more sleep than usual.

Tonight Mandy and M. are coming up for dinner. I’m planning a nice barbecued chicken and potato salad. It’ll be great to see them and to show them how big Greta is. After all it’s 18 days and counting until Greta’s puppies arrive! Wow!

Have a great weekend everyone!!!

Happy Birthday, Mandy!!!

Today is the day I gave birth to my daughter, Mandy! What an exciting and special moment it was. I remember seeing her for the very first time and my heart immediately filled with love for her.

She is an incredible, bright and fabulous woman and I am so pleased, not only to be her mother, but also her friend.

Happy Birthday, Sweetie!!!

Wonderful Family!

My sister is up visiting, along with her husband, and tonight Mandy and M. came up to join us for dinner. We went to Canoe for our meal. My favorite restaurant. Hubby and M. had Prime Rib, Mandy had the Lobster Macaroni and Cheese, Mel’s husband, Ron had the Seafood Stir fry and Mel and I had the tossed greens salad with Shrimp, goat cheese and spiced walnuts! And I shall burn in hell for eating 1/2 of the apple strudel, but it was very, very good!

We took pictures before and during the dinner. It was so nice as it is not often that we are all together.

We arrived back home, all feeling full and a bit sleepy after eating such a big meal. However, we were happy! Yes, Canoe does that to you!

Now we’re watching the Red Sox play, hoping they can win and stay alive in the playoffs one more day.

Tomorrow I’ll write about our trip aboard the Hobo Railroad. It was beautiful and brought back so many happy memories of train rides in the past.
