Thirteen Things That Are Happening This Weekend

1. We are leaving Fritz with our friends while we are at the show.
2. On Friday Hubby, Greta and I are driving to New York State for a German Dog Club show. In German it is called a Zuchtschau. (Breeder’s Show or Breed Specific Show)
3. We will stay overnight in a motel with a king size bed.
4. We got the king size bed because Greta is a bed hog!
5. Saturday I will have to present the young Greta to the German judge.
6. He will examine her bone structure, her teeth, her fur and her eyes. He will tell me all the good and bad things about Greta, but he will do this in German. (A translator will interpret)
7. Then I will have to walk/run her around the tent until the judge has determined I have done enough.
8. Then at the very end of the event, Greta will be given her rating. An excellent, very good, or good will be enough for me to register the puppies in Germany. If she flunks, then the puppies can only be registered with the AKC.
9. Since Bernie, (Greta’s boyfriend) got an excellent rating and they are practically twins, I am hoping she will at least get a very good or excellent rating.
10. We will drive back to New Hampshire on Saturday night.
11. We will pick up Fritz on our way home.
12. We will arrive home late.
13. Where we will fall into bed and finally sleep!

What I Did On Tuesday

Thursday 13

1. Changed the sheets on my bed and showered.
2. Made a breakfast of sausage, toast and eggs. I needed the toast to check out how our latest batch of Plum Jam had come out. (It came out great!)
3. Cleared shelves, tables and the floor of magazines and newspapers.
4. Washed down the kitchen shelves.
5. Cleaned out the fridge and made a grocery list.
6. Met Hubby at the Health Club.
7. Got a replacement piece for our cable system. I broke the piece on Sunday, but we won’t talk about that!
8. Went for lunch at our favorite Chinese/Japanese Buffet.
9. Enjoyed the drive from there to the grocery store, (about 8 miles) noting that the leaves are starting to turn.
10. Went to Wal-Mart to get dog food, and I also got my fall bulbs to plant, and a new leash for Greta to use in the dog show.
11. Went to the Grocery store for the first time since my surgery. I saw a woman who works there that I sort of know and spent some time telling her all about my eye.
12. Went back to get the other car, and drove home, surviving the ride!
13. Made dinner, watched “House” and cuddled up with Greta to go to sleep!

Thursday Thirteen, “The Grandmother Edition”

1. She was born February 4, 1887. Her parents George and Sarah, named her Mary Francis Daniell.

2. She had two sisters, Sarah Mathilda, the oldest, whom we all called Tilly, and Marionette, who chose to move away and never have much to do with any of the family.

Marionette, Tilly, seated and my very blond grandmother.

3. She met my Grandfather when she was 8 or 9 years old. His family moved into her neighborhood and Gram became best friends with his sister, Katchen. Gram taught them to speak English, as they were from Germany and didn’t speak a bit of English when they arrived.

4. Papa fell instantly in love with her and pursued her all through their teens. (Today we would call this stalking! LOL)

5. Her father insisted she finish college before she even considered marriage.

6. They married right after graduation on June 1, 1921, and were married for nearly 65 years before she passed away.

7. They had one son, Robert and my mother, Rosamond. They always thought of Tilly’s son George as their own too. They adored him.

8. Gram taught school in the Boston Public Schools. She taught 5th grade.

9. She was a member of the DAR, The Eastern Star and worked for the Christian Science Monitor in Boston.

10. She was always busy working for charities and I can’t recall a time, until she was very old that she actually rested.

11. She adored her grandchildren, there were five of us, Carl, Erica, my brother Richard, sister Melodie and yours truly!

12. She made the best cookies and also warm milk with honey and a pat of butter in it. To this day it calms me.

13. Sadly, she passed December 2, 1984. I feel lucky to have had such a great and wonderful grandmother.

Thirteen Things About Me and Falmouth Massachusetts

1 Falmouth was incorporated in 1686. It was originally a Whaling Village.
2. It is 44.52 square miles.
3. The county is Barnstable County and each year they have a huge fair. It is possibly the best county fair in Massachusetts!
4. The five largest employers in town are, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute; Falmouth Hospital; the Steamship Authority; the Town of Falmouth; and Marine Biological Laboratories.
5. I was raised in Falmouth, although I was born in Wareham, MA because Falmouth Hospital hadn’t been built yet.
6. My Dad taught school in Falmouth from the early 1950’s until 1986. So he had many parents of the kids I went to school with as students. That was very weird.
7. Falmouth has the most beautiful beaches on Cape Cod and most of my childhood was spent on them. I loved to swim. In fact when I was really small they had to tie a rope to me to keep me from swimming away.
8. My favorite beach is Surf Drive Beach. It had the “Baby Pool” where we all learned to swim, The medium swim area on the left where you went when you were a bit more advanced and then on the right the longest expanse of beach where they had a raft. That was the best!
9. I was the first child in Falmouth Hospital’s Pediatric Ward when it opened, when my appendix ruptured. I was three and a half years old. I can still remember watching Captain Kangaroo through the bars on the “crib” they made me sleep in!
10. Both of my children were born in that hospital!
11. I graduated from Falmouth High School in 1976.
12. I married my first husband at one church in Falmouth, and my second husband, Hubby at another, of course, not at the same time.
13. I still dream of Falmouth. Mostly I dream of walking on the beaches.
