Thirteen Things About Me and Falmouth Massachusetts

1 Falmouth was incorporated in 1686. It was originally a Whaling Village.
2. It is 44.52 square miles.
3. The county is Barnstable County and each year they have a huge fair. It is possibly the best county fair in Massachusetts!
4. The five largest employers in town are, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute; Falmouth Hospital; the Steamship Authority; the Town of Falmouth; and Marine Biological Laboratories.
5. I was raised in Falmouth, although I was born in Wareham, MA because Falmouth Hospital hadn’t been built yet.
6. My Dad taught school in Falmouth from the early 1950’s until 1986. So he had many parents of the kids I went to school with as students. That was very weird.
7. Falmouth has the most beautiful beaches on Cape Cod and most of my childhood was spent on them. I loved to swim. In fact when I was really small they had to tie a rope to me to keep me from swimming away.
8. My favorite beach is Surf Drive Beach. It had the “Baby Pool” where we all learned to swim, The medium swim area on the left where you went when you were a bit more advanced and then on the right the longest expanse of beach where they had a raft. That was the best!
9. I was the first child in Falmouth Hospital’s Pediatric Ward when it opened, when my appendix ruptured. I was three and a half years old. I can still remember watching Captain Kangaroo through the bars on the “crib” they made me sleep in!
10. Both of my children were born in that hospital!
11. I graduated from Falmouth High School in 1976.
12. I married my first husband at one church in Falmouth, and my second husband, Hubby at another, of course, not at the same time.
13. I still dream of Falmouth. Mostly I dream of walking on the beaches.

Thirteen Things about My Favorite Foods

1. Lobster is the best shellfish on the planet. Any way it is prepared is fabulous and wonderful.
2. Chocolate, dark chocolate is the best sweet on the face of the earth! I can live without many things, but not dark chocolate!
3. A steak cooked on a charcoal barbecue is just the best!
4. Let’s face it, there isn’t much that whipped cream isn’t good on.
5. Coffee, good hot, strong coffee is a simple pleasure.
6. Krispy Kreme donuts are to die for.
7. My favorite greek meal of Giros, fries and Tzatziki fills me with total delight!
8. Pizza with a lot of cheese, onions and peppers makes me smile. Add some sausage and I am delirious!
9. Fresh corn on the cob with lots and lots of butter on a hot summer day. Oh I could eat that until the corn came out my ears! Butter and sugar corn, of course!
10. Strawberries. Plain, covered in chocolate, on a short cake or over a crepe filled with cottage cheesse make me almost want to purr.
11. Ice Cream on a hot summer day. Especially Cherry Garcia in a waffle cone!
12. Smoked Salmon, cream Cheese and a bagel. You can all leave now and I will simply become filled with ecstacsy!
13. A good cheddar cheese. It’s a great way to finish any meal. And New England Cheddar is the best!

It’s Dackel Princess’s First Anniversary! So today my Thursday Thirteen is themed on this.

Thirteen things I have learned since I started writing on Dackel Princess.

1. One must always try to find the humor in ones day. Even if the event is the dog getting car sick in your lap!
2. It pays to proofread each post carefully. With the slip of a spell check a sentence that should have been totally harmless read “Fritz was so wonderful in the car after we gave him a tranquilizer, that now I will bed the Verterinarian for more.” (Can you see my red face?)
3. Although diets are never fun to be on, they sure are fun to joke about!
4. Dogs provide an endless source of both comical and heart breaking things to write about.
5. Husbands or signifigant others can do the same.
6. There is something about writing down your thoughts that helps to sooth the soul.
7. And there is something in the consolation of others that helps to heal you.
8. I have found I can write and tell the stories of my life and people are interested.
9. I have also found that I have a lot to say. (A surprise to me, but not to my family, who claim that I never am at a loss for words)
10. I’ve learned that I do not say good-bye well, but I can survive it. It just never gets any easier, does it?
11. That life is full of ups and downs and sideways! What is the most important is just learning to go with the flow.
12. The written word is wonderful, but sometimes a picture can say a lot more.
13. How grateful I am, each day when I write my posts and see that you all have stopped by to read, to look and to just say HI!

Thirteen Things About Hubby

This was taken during the summer of 1989. I’ve always loved this picture.

1. Today is Hubby’s birthday. I can’t tell you how old he is, but most children would call him ancient!
2. He was born in Boston.
3. He has the most beautiful blue eyes!
4. He loves to snow ski, hike with the dogs and fish.
5. He has a steely determination and once he puts his mind to it, there isn’t anything he can’t accomplish (okay, I have the childbirth thing going for me, but that’s about it).
6. He is 6 feet 4 inches tall. When we first started dating I had terrible neck pains from tipping my head up to kiss him (the neck muscles are nice and strong now).
7. If he hadn’t become a pilot he had once thought about becoming a Veterinarian.
8. He has had a White German Shepherd as a pet since 1963.
9. He used to own and operate a pick your own apple farm. He loves to cultivate fruit trees.
10. He speaks German as a second language and is always looking for people to practice with.
11. He has a great love of photography and taught me what I know about it.
12. He has a wonderful sense of humor.
13. He has a heart of gold and is always there for the people he loves. He is my rock.

Thirteen Things I Really Love
I am just including on this list the things I love.( I could never in my life list all the people and animals that I love, as it would use up all my bandwidth for the next lifetime!)

1. Dark Chocolate. I know, I know, I know. I should put thoughts of this truly delectable evil stuff out of my mind and try to start day dreaming about carrots and celery, but I just can’t do it!
2. Flowers. Don’t ask me to grow them, I have a black thumb. However, I love them. The smell, the way they look, and the way I feel when I get them.
3. The feeling I get inside just before I see people I love again after being apart for a while.
4. When I get a card from someone for no reason. Just because they’re thinking of me.
5. A really good meal. Like the one we had on our anniversary. (You will note here that several of my great loves involve food! Which is why I am always on a diet!)
6. Pajamas! Soft cottony, warm, comfortable pajamas, and the time to spend relaxing in them!
7. Taking a jacuzzi! I love to lie in the hot water, with my eyes closed, thinking about nothing.
8. Watching fruit grow on our trees. I get the biggest kick out of watching the flowers bloom, and then the fruit develop right there on the tree. Then picking the fruit and making things like jam, sauces and canning the fruit. I can also add, eating the canned fruit in the winter. That has been a big thrill.
9. Watching my pups play. In my life watching these beautiful, selfless creatures romp and play has brought such happiness into my life.
10. Seeing something particularly beautiful that is only found in nature. Like the glacier I saw in Alaska, or the volcano in Guatemala, or the Old Man of the Mountain here in New Hampshire, before it fell from the mountains, or going mushroom hunting in Bavaria!
11. When something I do turns out well and makes someone happy. I am such a klutz and often I try things and they go so wrong. How happy I am when I try something and everything goes well.
12. Making a surprise and actually pulling it off. I love to give people wonderful surprises. I like the thrill of doing it and making someone feel special.
13. All the days I have been given in this lifetime. How blessed I am to have had all this time, with all these wonderful people and animals! Yes, all these days, make me very happy!

Thirteen Things about My Pets

1. My first pet was a Siamese cat named Smokey. He was a Blue Point, and a real sweetie.
2. I thought I was a cat person for many years, until I got my first White Shepherd puppy, Max. Then I got Shubi and I was hooked. Although I love cats, I discovered I am a dog person.
3. Max was 8 weeks old when we got him. He was from Tucson, Arizona.
4. He was the sweetest dog until he discovered he was a boy. Then he made me crazy until he went to Doggie Reform School.
5. I thought he just might eat Shubi when we brought her home. She wasn’t even 4 pounds! He was 128!
6. I needn’t have worried. Shubi took control and he adored her.
7. I never planned on getting Shubi. We were visiting our friends in Munich and I casually said we should get puppies together. The next day I owned Shubi!
8. She was the very best animal I ever had.
9. Max died at age 12 1/2 and Fritz came to us two months later.
10. 2 months later Shubi became ill. We were told she wouldn’t live long. So, I started a search for another wire-haired dachshund.
11. Greta arrived a couple of months later, and took control of the house.
12. Shubi passed away two years after the doctors told us she would. She was 10.
13. Looking forward to when Greta has puppies, gives me a lot of comfort.
