Question!

I was sitting here in the early stages of planning our Christmas foods and I started to wonder, what foods make it Christmas for you?

So far I have planned a nice rib roast for our actual Christmas Dinner. I’ll be serving green beans, butternut squash and braised pearl onions. I’m also thinking baked stuffed potatoes would be nice.

However, I’m totally not sure what to make for Hubby and I on Christmas Eve for dinner. I want to cook something special, a little lamb roast perhaps?

So, my question today is three-fold. What food makes it Christmas for you, and what does your family do for Christmas Eve Dinner? Does your family do anything special on Christmas morning for breakfast? Anything that you HAVE to have?

Please everyone comment and tell me all about your traditions. I’m looking forward to hearing your answers.

Meanwhile, it’s back into the office for me. I’ve been working hard and I think I will be done by Monday or Tuesday.

  1. On Christmas eve since ages we are eating salmon slices on toast and then a fondue bourgignonne. Since Marieken is vegetarian we do now a Pirade, which is the same, you can grill what you want on the top but melt cheese underneath. served with a salad and baked potatoes and then a nice desert. On Christmas day, it depends. I don’t know what Dario will cook. He is the chef, lol !

  2. We do our big meal on Christmas Eve…usually a turkey dinner with all the trimmings but if it were just my little family I”d do a prime rib.

Christmas Day we are more casual…we add a honey baked ham to the turkey leftovers and do lots of nice hot and cold hors d’oeuvres. And and we always have punch…wouldn’t be Christmas Day without my moms punch (cranberry juice, pineapple juice, 7-up-delicious!)

We have homemade coffee cake/cranberry bread while we do our stockings and then after stockings we have a breakfast sausage casserole before opening presents. We make the sausage casserole the day before so its easy breakfast Christmas morning. My aim is not to spend Christmas Day in the kitchen.

  3. When my children were growing up we were very involved in our Church life. Christmas Eve was Church. children’s church program and then dinner at locat pizza joint because we had to go back for 11 PM service. Christmas morning was big breakfast- ham or bacon, fried potatoes with sausage & onions, croissants, juice or milk. Dinner before teen years was usually standing rib roast with full fixings. During teen years and after, breakfast survived. However, the kids have in-laws and close friends to see so Mom (me) keeps snacks and nibbles on hand for the hungry who appear at different intervals. Also, my Mother lives here and we go to see her on Crhistmas Day. My siblings and their families come and go at her house as too much commotion at one time tends to upset her. So, Chirstimas Day is mobile but fun. Food at many locations is availablefor the hungry butout big meal together on Christmas remains breakfast while the little ones enjoy Santa’s gifts. It works for us.

  4. I like to have simple fare for Christmas Eve. Like cold cuts with rolls and chips, pickles and or some shrimp.
The one thing I really must have is green jello with pear halves and red cherries. I love a good cheese ball and marzipan. Making some cookies with Mom today. Love YOU, Mel

  5. My family’s Christmas dinner tradition was turkey. My husband’s ham. We switch years now — turkey/ham/turkey/ham. Born Montanans have prime rib for Christmas, which I love, but never seemed right for Christmas dinner to me.

  6. Christmas Eve is usually just a quiet night at home for my husband and me. I make either steaks or a roast turkey breast – he gets to request the dinner. Christmas morning we go to my parents’ and have zucchini bread, cranberry bread, and pumpkin bread with an oven omelette and bacon. There may or may not also be a small plate of fudge and cookies on the table at breakfast :o) Christmas dinner alternates between lasagna and something else (pork roast, roast turkey, Cornish game hens). This year is not a lasagna year,so my mom is making Cornish game hens.

  7. We usually have a different meal every year (which usually my Dad puts together), but one dessert we always like to have is Tiramisu. 🙂

  8. Christmas Eve is a traditional BBQ at home for us as the weather is so hot normally……..full baked Turkey and Vegies for lunch with cranberry sauce…….left overs and added salad for dinner…….boxing day we go on a picnic with any leftovers and fresh bread (with added salad), and invite any family or friends around to join us……fireworks at our local beach boxing day evening too…..so different to a christmas in the snow…

  9. I’m making a pork roast for Dave and me…with mashed potatoes, acorn squash and brussels sprouts on Christmas Eve. Christmas day, I think he’s having a spiral ham, taters, mac & cheese, green beans and rolls for the fam.
