You’ve Got “No Mail”

This morning after sitting down at the computer I discovered that I had no mail. I normally have a lot of correspondence waiting for me. I first suspected a problem with my ISP, but after talking to a technician there, they informed me that the problem had been created by a Norton Anti Virus Automatic Update, and that I should contact Norton for a fix (so to speak). How nice! A fix for a fix! What won’t they think of next!
Here is a heads up if any of you find this problem. Norton Anti Virus put out a “new fix” for their e-mail scanning program. Basically it shuts off your e-mail, all e-mail!, until you do their fix.

I called Norton and after going around and around and around talking to their computer, I finally got a young girl in INDIA! She went over the problem with me and then announced that she could help me fix it if I paid only $29.95!!! WHAT! They create this problem on Anti Virus 2005 and then they want me to pay them to undo what they did! I was furious! Then she said, I could get the fix online and do it myself. I told her exactly what I thought of their little scam and then also told her that next year when I need a new anti virus program I will switch to McCaffee. I now feel sorry for the young girl. It’s absolutely not her fault that Norton is doing this to drum up some more money.
I need to mention here that in order to continue to download anti virus definitions on Hubby’s old computer, I must now turn off Norton before I down load them. I asked why and was told that there is a conflict with that system and, anyway, no one uses Windows ME any more… Right. I’m no one!
So, I first fixed Hubby’s computer with the instructions that I down loaded, which were not the easiest to follow (biggest piece of crap I’ve ever seen), but since I got the gist of the problem I was able to go in and fix it. Then I came out to my machine, which is XP and tried to do the same thing, which of course, did not work. A half hour later and with 50% less hair on my head, I figured out that I had to turn off my Windows XP firewall and just use the Norton firewall. I guess Norton decided that they don’t want to be compatible with other operating systems. (I was told that Norton will only function with Norton fire walls)
The computers are fixed and the e-mail is coming in again, but not without a significant amount of frustration. I have told Hubby that he is lucky to have me. He just shook his head and grunted.
A great way to start the week.
