By A Nose Par Deux

Today I met Dr. S. A nice man a tad older than me. He examined my schnozzola (nose) and gave me several options. First his diagnosis is more than likely Basal Cell Carcinoma. Not a big deal as it is very common for people “my age” to have these lesions appear. It is also very treatable. He gave me three options as to how to resolve this. First to have the lesion excised in surgery, which would leave a small line on my nose. The second is to do a “punch” biopsy, which would leave a scar and might require more surgery later, and lastly to scrape the lesion for a biopsy, and that also can leave a scar, and would require more surgery if it was positive. I opted for the first option. I’m going in next Wednesday for out patient surgery. They will do a frozen section on the tissue and we will know then and there. The scar will be a simple line and will fade quickly.

I also got the results of my “Glucose Tolerance” test. I am Hypoglycemic. This will require a change in diet, and a more careful monitoring of my blood sugar levels. I was a bit miffed at how on earth I could improve my diet, after all I am following Weight Watchers, but the doctor told me I need to cut out simple carbohydrates and starchy foods, like pasta, white bread, sugar, etc, and opt for whole grains, more protein and vegetables. He also wants me to eat 5-6 small meals a day. “Graze”, he said. “Graze”.

So, I am feeling a little old. I’m sure once I get things under control I will be okay, and it won’t bother me so much. I guess it’s just another adjustment that you make as your life goes on.

  1. Glad you had the spot checked out. I think I would have chosen the same option as you. I am sure that with the skill of doctors these days you won’t even see the little line when it is all healed!

You might think about talking with a nutritionist – it was the best thing I ever did – it certainly helped me understand why I had to eat certain foods and not others – it does baffle me that that want you on a lower carb diet than you alreay are – did he has what your diet was now? I think everyone would do better eating small meals anyway! Good luck with it all.

  2. i thought I read that the doctor wanted you to say “Grace”, LOL! Perhaps you should try that too, it might help to pray 5 or 6 times a day about all this stuff going on with you. Glad you are following Doctors orders. Take good care of yourself. Love YOU! Mel

  3. Hope all with the nose comes out just fine. If you are hypoglycemic, then should you eat the cobbler or do you want it for others?

Maybe, just eating the peaches raw would be a good idea; however, you might want to read Quilly’s blog today. Aie aie aie. She got into the mangoes….big time…and did you know they are a member of the poison ivy family?? Who knew!

  4. I think you picked the best option – having to go back and having to remove more of it sounds like it would be more pain than it was worth.

Grazing 😉 Heheh! I do think simple sugars are bad, just make you hungry too quickly afterwards.

  5. Feeling old ! are you crazy ?? just for a little line on the nose which is not even sure ??
I couldn’t comment or do anything yesterday Internet was out of work ! We have been in the mountains yesterday where the James Bond crew was ! Was so surprised to see the name everywhere and the hotel owner was SOOOO proud. Weather is wonderful too. Each morning while my old man still sleeps I am sitting here on a camping place on the terrace and do my blogging for an

  6. Well, at least you know all the results now and can take action. Isn’t it weird all the little things that come up when you get older? As of August 2008 our health insurance will pay for a complete skin check so Mr. M and I are going to go and get that done for sure.

  7. Oh yea… I forgot the part about the complex carbs… yep! It’s what ya do! Well… better to know and be ABLE to take care of it, huh? I know what ya mean though – when you think you’re REALLY being good and then you find out you could still be better — and BETTER be!!! YIKES!

  8. I am sending you the biggest hug humanly possible over the magic waves of the internet!!!!!!!!!!! I need to go and have my sugar checked after summer. I have had a suspicion for a while that I might be heading the same way but my last checkup was ok. However it runs in the family. You are not old, and you are lucky. You have wonderful pups, a wonderful family and a man who adores you – and although you found some health issues both are treatable and detected early. Do they still have the Core program on WW? If so maybe you should switch as that would be a good diet for you now. Keep your chin up (or you’ll get wrinkles too!) hehehe
