Mama Mia!

Hubby and I decided to take in a movie today. I’ve wanted to see “Mama Mia!” since with trailers first started to appear on the television a while back. As with almost everything, it takes movies a while to get to the back woods of New Hampshire.

I was really amazed. It was so much fun, and the singing by people I have never thought of as singers, Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Julie Walters and Colin Firth, was actually very good!

I’m also 49 years old. All the music originally done by the musical group ABBA, was popular during the time when I avidly followed pop music. I remember listening to my radio in my bedroom at home as a teen and dancing up a storm. I also knew every word to every song back then, but my memory is failing as I approach middle age, so please don’t ask me to sing each word now.

Today, sitting in the movie theater with Hubby, listening to the music and following the movie plot, brought tears to my eyes. Part of me really just wanted to get up and dance! It brought me back to another time, when I was young, carefree and my body didn’t ache as much!

Go ahead call me menopausal, but I liked the movie. It had heart!

I must add here, go with your friends, husbands, wives, etc. Please do not take your 6 year old child in the hopes that said child will love the music so much they will sit quietly through a movie that is waaaaay over their little heads. The subject matter is adult, and the two little ones sitting in front of us, who were stuck sitting through a 2 hour movie so their Mom could see it, were bored to tears and really doing their best to ruin it for everyone else.

Do go see Mama Mia! I promise you won’t be disappointed and as our friends in Australia warned us, don’t go walking out of the theater until AFTER the credits have rolled through!

  1. I did last Wednesday, Maribeth, and like you I simply loved the movie!! Glad I had plenty of kleenex with me, I quietly sang along too. Wonderful!! I often read the credits and this time it was absolutely delightful to wait until the very end 🙂

  2. I sooooo want to go and see his, I can’t wait!

I too remember the songs, oh such a long time ago! Hang on, I have an ABBA cd in the car!!!!

I can so see you dancing around your bedroom, hairbrush in hand (as a mic)… Tell me you DIDN’T do that!!!

  3. Actually… Krysti & I saw this on stage about 2 years ago — I guess she was 16 or 17 — we BOTH LOVED it! Of course, her musical tastes are VERY diverse and she is a theatrical kid – was always in the plays at school and stuff! But Mama Mia I think is one of the BEST shows I’ve ever seen! And I’ve seen lots! I’m sure the movie is equally well done!

  4. I have seen it and you are right !!! I went with my friend Anne and 5 of her friends to the movie (7 crazy Abba fans and old girls, lol )and had so much fun !! We all cried of laughter and our belly muscles hurt ! The actors didn’t sing themselves the voices were from other singers. The only one I really didn’t get used to see singing was Pierce Brosnan (the ex Bond boy) it just didn’t fit on him, but the 3 old girls were absolutely hilarious ! When we came out of the movie we all dansed around singing ! you should have seen the faces of younger people, hahaha ! we were all over 60 !!

  5. I saw the movie in England in France and Belgium it only comes out probably in October. It has first to be translated or subtitled into french as usual.

  6. Went to see it two weeks ago with a friend-loved it!!
Sang, belly laughed, watched credits. I, too, thought Brosnan was not relaxed singing but he is soooo easy to look at. We are busy making hurricane preparations today just in case Fay does come our way. At this point in time the projected path goes right over Punta Gorda-but they “say” like they “said” with Charley it will only be a category 2 storm at most. So, with winds of 173 MPH at Charlotte Regional for Charley, I just don’t trust forecasts fully. Gulf water right now is 85-91 degrees.
I have to be at the hospital during the storm but will have cell phone with me and will advise you as soon as possible. Take care. Carol

  7. I’ve really been wanting to see it and probably better get out to the movies while it is here. Abba must be way back in vogue. When we were on the cruise ship a couple of years ago we became reaquainted with their songs. My daughter made me a copy of her cd. 🙂

  8. I’ve already heard others speaking about this movie – of course – since ABBA music is involved, Swedes does notice it 🙂

I’m going o see it, sooner or later, and I’m sure I’ll love it!
