The Workings Of Nature

My little Anneliese has been walking around the house crying. At first I thought she was just discovering her voice and I didn’t think much about it. As the days passed, I hoped she would unfind it, as she started to fuss and cry during the day, at night and early in the morning.

She then threw me a curve ball and stopped eating for two days. I was really worried then. Was she ill? I watched her. I tried to calm her. I snuggled with her a bit more than I already do. You know instead of cuddling her 14 hours a day it was up to 20 hours!

Then last night she flipped over for a belly rub and I saw them! Yes, Anneliese is having a false pregnancy. She is full of milk!!! If we had bred her when she had her heat, she would be having puppies now. I hadn’t thought of it, but apparently her internal clock (and hormones) did, and have gotten everything ready for her imaginary babies!

She’s been dragging a little hedgehog stuffed animal around and she mothers it. I mean, this is heart breaking stuff, people!

My sister, ever the helpful one, suggested we get Anneliese some baby squirrels to nurse! Oh yeah, Anneliese the wild one, wouldn’t nurse squirrels…she would eat them!

No, she will just have to get over this on her own. I keep telling her next time baby. Next time, you will be old enough and we will breed you and you will have babies, but somehow I don’t think she is listening.

I may call the doctor tomorrow and get some tranquilizers. For her? What are you kidding! With all this crying I’m the one that needs them!

LOL!!!

  1. Okay, maybe not baby squirrels, but how about baby bunnies, no that wouldn’t work either. Baby skunks, NO, how about Baby lizards, do they nurse? LOL!

  2. Awww poor little girl!!! I don’t know anything about false pregnancy in dogs either, is it common? Can they develop doggy-mastitis from the milk build up or anything like that?

Hope everything settles down for you guys soon! 🙂

  3. How terrible, poor little Anneliese ! can’t you buy her a little stuffed baby doggie instead of the hedgehog ? and what happens to the milk doesn’t it hurt ? Maybe she has to have some pills for the hormons. Poor you it must be heartbreaking to hear her crying !

  4. Hi Mom,

Hope you enjoyed the weekend. Mine was hectic and busy with M & I just getting back from our business trips, but it was hectic and busy together, which made us both happy!

Sorry I have not yet responded with a good dinner date. We have been swamped on the weekends, and I know the next 2 we are already booked as well! We will have to try for early in Sept.

Gram is having cataract surgery on Wed. I have to bring her to Nashua for it…. Do you know how long this procedure takes?

Well, hope you are having a good day. I’m wrapping up a late lunch, so figured I would drop a hello!

    Love you lots,
    Mandy

  5. I did not know dogs do that! Oh my goodness…that is sad, but I can only imagine how her emotional crying would be driving you slightly bananas. LOL Yes, maybe a bigger hedgehog for her…and tranquilizers for you! 🙂
