There Is No Nightlife!

I have come to realize that I do not cross time zones easily. Going east to Europe I seemed to do okay, but had the overwhelming feeling of utter exhaustion for several days, but it was nothing a good strong cup of German coffee couldn’t cure.

Anneliese and I did rendezvous with the great out of doors at 2:30 in the morning for several days, but soon she fell into German time and we both slept through the night.

Hot flashes seemed to occur at any time, as my body could not decide where the heck it was in relationship to my menopausal symptoms. I kept a sweater by my side so that I could cover up with a chill or pull it off when I flashed!

Then I came home.

At first I was nearly punchy with lack of sleep. I went 22 hours without sleep that night. I hoped that this would help me get back to East Coast time quickly, alas I was wrong. It just seemed to make it worse.

I would sit here in the evening with my head bobbing, my vision doubling and eventually my eyes closing and my jaw opening to let lose a giant snore.

I tried taking a nap. I thought perhaps this would help. I slept like a baby, but it didn’t help at all. You should have seen me last night, all decked out in my pajamas, snuggled in my blanket with the dackels all around me. I was trying to watch the CBS comedy line up, but really only made it through “The Big Bang Theory” before going into my sleepy trance!

Hubby tried to get me to stay awake and I tried. Really I did. I even sat in this chair with my eyes open, as if I were truly awake. Finally when I noticed the clock read 9:30 I gathered up the dackels and Fritz and off to bed I went.

30 seconds later, I was asleep!

Today I have tried another avenue. I have stayed awake all day, and at 4:00 this afternoon I made myself the strongest cup of coffee and drank the entire thing. So far I am awake, but then it is only 6:45 PM.

I think it will be a little longer until Anneliese and I are back on time. However, I heard today that this is the weekend that we “Spring Forward” with the clocks!

Just what I need! Another time change to conquer!

  1. Sorry to hear about the adjustment dilemma. For me, it was just the opposite. Adjusted quickly to Hawaii time but had the dickens of a time when arriving back in FL. Oh well, about 5 days later I had it licked. Good luck to you.

  2. Ah, that’s bad. I was lucky – when we have been in the US for our Holiday in 2004 I was awake until midnight US time the day we arrived and slept until 9 so I started in the right rhythm on my first day and it went surprisingly well. No problems to adjust at all.
When we came back we flew out of NY in the afternoon and arrived back home the following morning and I just stayed awake until 8 in the evening and I was in the right rhythm again.

But I guess part of that was because I was only 22 years old. 😉
We will see how I cope this year when we fly to the West Coast.
I planed it quite well, we will start here around lunch time and arrive in Las Vegas at 8 in the evening. If we manage to stay awake until then we should sleep perfectly fine and hopefully be in the rhythm soon.

  3. Jetlag is the pits. I’ve always found going the other way to be the hardest though. Maybe it depends on whether you’re just starting a fun vacation or heading back into your daily grind lol.

Are you really changing the clocks already? That seems so soon. (Not that I’d object, I love daylight savings time and can’t wait for it to arrive here.)

  4. I always have trouble with Jet Lag. You just have to hang in there and know that in a week you’ll feel fine again. Getting out in the sunshine helps to reset your clock too. Take a walk or sit out and soak up the rays for a short time. That always helps me. Love YOU, Mel

  5. Hi Mom,

I agree that it takes some time to adjust. An hour or two, or even three going to CA are not so bad, but I can see where (is it 6 hours?) can be difficult to deal with….

Hope you have a good day today, and are able to “get back on the clock!” so to speak.

    xo

    Love you lots,

    Mandy

  6. I have heard it usually takes several days to get it turned around. Sounds like you’re getting close though…
We turn clocks up THIS weekend?! ALREADY?! Wow! Spring MUST be coming!

  7. Jet lag is tough and it takes a good week to get over it. Be glad that you are not in a situation where you have to be at work and awake at 8 am each day…and take your time with the adjustment. Remember you live there..you will adjust eventually. Take it easy.
