My Babies

Sunday was supposed to be a quiet, catch up day, unfortunately I got going and before I knew it, I was really chugging along.

I wanted to type out the transfer papers for the puppies, I wanted to print out pictures of Anneliese and Isegrim for the new owners. I got all that done, as well as played with my precious babies.

It’s a funny feeling when you reach this point in their lives. You are ready for them to leave, as having 8 dogs is too much for any sane individual, but at the same time, you look at those beautiful individual faces and you realize how much you will miss them.

From the moment of their conception, their birth and then through the first weeks of their lives, I have been with them. Even though I refer to myself as their grand-mummy, in many ways I have been their mother. After Anneliese finished nursing them, I taught them to lap milk, to eat puppy gruel, to lap water, and to use newspaper!

Anneliese may have been the one to give birth to them, but these are my babies!!!

I read something recently and I realized that I am not a professional breeder. I am not in it for the money, and my dogs are all my pets. I am a breeder who breeds dogs for health, and sound temperaments, and I try to fill them with love so that when they do go to their forever homes they will be able to shower their new owners with love.

I think I am a responsible breeder and more than anything, I know I am breeding for the right reasons. I bet tomorrow when the two families arrive to pick up their babies, their hearts will be filled with love.

Isn’t that what it’s all about?

  1. I know how you will miss your babies. I’ll be thinking of you as you watch them being lovingly welcomed by their new owners. You did a great, great job with them. Love YOU, Mel

  2. Indeed it IS! IF I was going to pay outlandish sums of money for a puppy (as opposed to rescuing from a shelter, which is my preference) I would definitely look for a breeder like YOU! I wish that the breeders who sold dogs to my mother would have spent more time considering who they were selling to though! My mother once paid $1500 for an Old English Sheepdog she just HAD to have… and 4 months later when it was “too big” (imagine that!) for our townhouse, took it “to the farm” – which was HER euphemism for the Shelter!!! That breeder KNEW we lived in a tiny townhouse with a postage stamp yard! WHY would they sell US that dog??? I am glad you are responsible – both about your breeding and your raising — and your choosing responsible parents!

  3. Your puppies look like they truly are filled with love and will give it willingly to their new mommies and daddies. You have fulfilled your duty as a breeder. I think that is what good breeding is all about. You pick good solid mates for your dogs and that produces good healthy puppies. A friend I had a long time ago wanted to breed sheepdogs. The female she had developed displastic hips, so she would not breed her. The puppies would have passed on that trait. It was a finanacial loss for her, but it was a sound decision she made.

  4. You do a wonderful job with those lovely puppies, Maribeth!! It’s going to be a hard day… will be thinking of you!

  5. wow, each time I visit, I think-she needs to keep them ALL!! I need to see pics of them daily!! But 8 dogs??? wow, that’s a lot of dogs!!!
I will miss the daily photos of them, but I agree with others—you are a GOOD breeder and these doggies will have better lives because of the work you did with/for them. šŸ™‚

  6. I love the photos of your and your pups… this must be a bittersweet time for you right now. Dreading the minute that you have to say goodbye to your babies and being thrilled that they’ve all found great homes!

  7. Dear Maribeth- I was the person who walked in to get my Wire’s nails cut and the receptionist told me of your outstanding puppies (she babysits them). I saw the pics, and let me tell you, it took all my strength NOT to call you!We already have 3 wires (Brownwood Farms in Alpharetta Ga for one of them)and love them to death, and have always wanted a wild boar….maybe in the future I can imagine one more. I will definitely keep your web address and check it out every now and then. Sorry we didn’t have time to visit your place, as we left the next day….
