Senior Citizens

It not everyday that you begin to question how you look. Recently I started to do this. Mostly I feel I look pretty good for a 47 year young woman, but the other day something happened that made me think that perhaps the upcoming eye surgery can’t happen soon enough.
Hubby and I had gone to our favorite Chinese Buffet. The place was not particularly crowded and we got a good table with a very friendly waitress. We ate and had a great time, and while Hubby was getting his dessert I decided to be a sweet wife and pick up the check.
I got out my credit card and the waitress came over.
“Oh, I have a coupon too!” I said.
“No need.” she said, “I gave you both the senior citizens rate.”
I sat there dumbfounded. Was she just being nice, or do I really look over 65? I looked at my hands, vanity prevented me from whipping out my pocket mirror and checking out my face. I felt a lump in my throat. 65! Why, that’s not going to happen for 18 years right?
18 years. Why, why that just around the corner! Suddenly all the gray hairs I work so hard to cover, and those crows feet around my eyes and the aches ad pains I feel each morning when I get up, they were all telling me, “You Are Old!”
I smiled weakly at the waitress when she brought back my check. Hubby returned from the dessert bar and I told him what had occurred. He laughed at me and smiled.
“It’s just the company you keep.” he reminded me.
Well, I’m not sure I believe him, but just in case I am starting to look old, I have ordered a case of Oil of Olay and made an appointment with my hairdresser for a dye job.

  1. I don’t think you look 65 or anywhere NEAR that figure. I was actually surprised to hear you’re 47, because you don’t look it!! What’s the surgery for? (Guess I must have missed that post!)

  2. I am sure it was because you were with Hubby, it is not that you look old at all.
People see me with the grandkids and just assume that I am their Mother. It is not that I look that young,( although I do look good for my age) but people see you with some kids or with someone older and just don’t think how you look, they just assume stuff.
You look great and you don’t look even close to your age.

  3. Oh, I am sure she was just trying to be nice. Only I would have felt like you, too. I am about your age and think I don’t look like I am in my late 30’s but definetely not like a senior citizen! But I heard in my home country Chile, they start giving you special rates at age 50!!!
    You look wonderful!

  4. Wow, that was a whopper of an assumption on the waitress’s part. I’m dumbfounded. She was probably being helpful, but how about saving a little face and just informing one of the option that there is an age discount available.

I can never judge anyone’s age these days. All I know is that when one feels happy about their life, it definitely shows no matter what age. So darling, you’re simply marvelous!

  5. I could be wrong but at a lot of places the Sr citizen discount starts at 50. I’m not saying you look 50 but you don’t even resemble 65 so you may be at one of those establishments….That’s what I’d say no matter what, and I’d stick to it!!!

  6. Hi Mom,
No way do you look even remotely close to 65! As Mel says, it is simply the company you keep!!! I went out with a younger guy a little while ago (who looked younger than his 25 years), and got carded when I ordered a daquiri. I was pretty certain the only reason I was carded, was due to the fact that I was there with someone younger (who looks younger!)

Have a great day today, and forget that waitress! Remember you look great, and as Heza says, it’s all about how you feel anyhow!

    Love,

    Mandy
