The Princess And The Pillow

We all have things in our lives that we like certain ways. You know, steak cooked medium rare, ketchup with our salted french fries, dark chocolate as opposed to milk chocolate. However, there is one area of my life, so Hubby tells me, where my specifications border on being an obsessive compulsive………….That is MY PILLOW.

A few years ago I started waking up with a crick in my neck. After a few weeks of this, I bought a new pillow. After all, my old pillow was very flat and it was well used. The new pillow failed after about three weeks, maybe a month. So I went out and got another one, but that one also failed after a few weeks.

It became an obsession for me to find a comfortable pillow. I started reading ads in catalogues and I searched online for information. My family started giving me advice on a pillow comfort solution.

I bought a latex foam pillow, but found it gave no support for my head (which is large and heavy, sort of like a bobble doll). I tried a memory foam core pillow wrapped in polyester fiberfill, but it lost its memory after a week. I tried feather pillows, but they flattened out in 30 seconds.

What I needed, I determined, was an overstuffed, hypoallergenic, fiberfilled pillow. My quest began.

I tried the Internet, read ads and looked in bed and bath shops, but I found nothing. Then yesterday I was in Wal-Mart, and I saw a pillow that had it all. Overstuffed, extra firm, king sized, and hypoallergenic. Best of all, after all the money I have spent on the other pillows, this one was only $15.00!

I was filled with anticipation as I tossed this pillow into my cart. When I got it home, I carefully put on a pillow cover and pillow case, and placed it with great reverance on my bed. I stared at it for a moment, and I could feel myself begin to tear up.

After that I could hardly wait for bed. At 10 o’clock last night Greta and I hit the sheets and when my head fell onto my new pillow I could feel the joy well up in my heart.

So much for one night. Ask me again in a month.

  1. Well, I had the same latex foam pillow for over thirty years and it took me forever to find it’s replacement…so I feel that particular pain. But I like a relatively flat but firm pillow. I’ve had my current foam pillow for 3 years now. I don’t think it will last as long as my old one…one can only hope.

  2. It just freaks me out how alike we are. I am going through THE SAME PROBLEM! We’ve spent hundreds of dollars trying to find a freaking *pillow* that doesn’t flatten after a week, that isn’t full of feathers (which poke the crap out of my face while I’m sleeping), that doesn’t hurt my neck and that isn’t as hard as nails.

Here’s to hoping I can find one like yours!!

  3. Keep us posted because I’m always looking for pillows that don’t flatten and don’t leave me feeling as though I haven’t slept when i wake up!!!

  4. I’ve had good success with the pillows I’ve bought from Costco. They last at least a few years, which is better than going flat after a few months. Good luck with yours!

Thanks for your kind words about Fergie. I appreciate it very much. The Lord knows I need lots of support from my blogger doggy mamas!!

  5. Pillows drive me crazy too. Paul is allergic to down too. And he always steals my pillows and claims they are “his” Boo. I used to like my pillow but I think it’s getting a little flat.

  6. I bet that Ms. Greta is excited for the new pillow. My dogs just l.o.v.e. to lie on my pillow when I’m not there. If she likes to do that, this new one should really be fun for her in her current “delicate” condition.

  7. Great Post! I couldn’t agree with you more about dark chocolate and a good night’s sleep. I can think of better things to do than wrestle with a stubborn pillow. I hope this one suits the princess 😉

  8. oh i am looking forward to what you will have to say about it in a month. my hubby is very picky about pillows, too, and that sounds like the perfect pillow for him 🙂

  9. No pillows for me but a neck roll…I know there will come a time I won’t leave home without it because hotels normally only have pillows and I have to roll them for a comfortable sleep!
Good luck with your new pillow, it looks very comfy 🙂

  10. I’m like that too. I’ve got a pillow now, that if someone tried to take it..I’d have to give serious thought to murder. Really…Good luck on yours

  11. Ahh how alike we all seem to be. My pillows are from college? Maybe even earlier. And I desperately need a new one. I really want to try the Tempurpedic ones – especially since they come with a guarantee.

Once I solve the cheaper problem of a pillow…we need a new bed! Any suggestions? I used to love a soft bed but now I need something to support my back more….the search is to begin come January.

  12. What a great note, MB – and so true. The wrong pillow can completely ruin one’s life.

You two sure do look comfie there – all cuddled up.

I agree with others….let us know about this pillow, as I am in the same boat.
