A Rant About Vet Care

I’ve decided that I should have paid attention in school and gone on to college and become a Veterinarian. Why is this? Well frankly because in the last two years my Vet bills have more than doubled for just the yearly exams for my fury friends!

I noticed that prices were starting to climb last year, but this year when I paid the bill I nearly passed out.

Now I understand that the Veterinarians have their overhead, like four or five technicians that for some reason do most of their work, not to mention the two secretaries who answer their phones and make appointments, but I am thinking that the world has gone a little bit crazy when it costs me more to bring a dackel in for a wellness checkup than it costs me for one!

Recently I’ve been talking to friends and family who have expressed great sadness because after their current pet is gone, they will not get another. They will be alone, with no fur child to soothe them.

I know that so many people up here in New Hampshire have brought their fury friends to the pound because they cannot afford their medical care.

Oh please don’t get me started on Pet Health Care Insurance. Do you know what sort of rip off that is? Trust me, it is almost as much of a rip off as these crazy Vets. and their crazy prices.

In the next few months I’ll be researching Vets to see if I can find one who gives multiple dog discounts. Or perhaps clinics that give you a break.

You see, with four dogs, we’re simply going broke. And I do not feel it is right that I either buy food for the family or spend over $500.00 at the Vets for them to look at the dogs, pronounce them healthy and then overcharge me for their heart-worm and flea medication!

  1. I agree and I cringe about the bill tomorrow when we take Gizzin for checkup – ready to deliver little”wawa’s” any day. Will keep you posted on her progress. I work tomorrow nite and am hoping to hear that your md appt goes very well. Love you

  2. Yes, The prices have gone so high that most people can not afford to pay for care for their pets. One kitty we have is 15 and we can’t afford to do any crazy stuff for her at her age. Our other cat is 10. We hope he’ll be around awhile, but after him we just can’t afford to pay for all the vet bills. Sad! Love YOU, Mel

  3. Hubs and I said we’d likely buy insurance with our next dog. You might not need it until they’re older, but we’ve also just thrown money at the vet this past year. It’s frustrating.

  4. I think that when people get a pet, they should put aside money in a pet fund for when the pet gets older. A little, like what you’d spend for coffee at Dunkin Donuts. It adds up fast, and that way, if and when medical issues arise, you don’t have to abandon your ‘beloved’ pet at the pound. I think that’s just a copout. Be responsible, people!!! Think about it before you get an animal that is going to live 15 years or more. Think it through…if that’s the way it’s going to be, get a stuffed animal. Cheaper, and less stress on the poor live animal in the long run.

  5. That is crazy ! My vet is a lady, she has her own cabinet and works alone as all vets do here except if you go to a pet clinic. She is one of the vets who love animals and only ask for the legal price and not a penny more. I pay 25 € for a check up and mostly the shot is included. The whole street here has her as vet, for cats and dogs and even other small animals. She is absolutely wonderful.

  6. I know what you mean, we were lucky to have found a good veterinarian in our area. But yes vet bills are known to be ridiculously high. (sigh)

  7. We have the best vet. She comes to our house and charges the least on any we have ever had. She has mo overhead but fills in at different animal hospital. The cats are never tipped off by seeing the carrier. They used to disappear on vet, conveniently. Couldn’t be happier. We do have an animal hospital we can go to. Our vet works with them and its all great.
