Bye, Bye Christmas Tree

When I got up this morning I threw on my clothes and started the arduous process of taking down the tree. Here’s the funny part. It took me three days to put it all up and 4 hours to take it all down!

Hubby was watching TV and reading the newspaper, and I was listening to my MP3 Player. I danced around the tree doing the first of the 5 parts of tree demolition required.

1.) Tinsel removal.

Okay, I know you guys are going to laugh and some will call me cheap (I prefer the term frugal) but when I remove the tinsel, I save it. I’ve had the tinsel I use for over 20 years! Each year I put it on, and then at the end of the season, I take it off and put it in a ziploc bag until next year.

2.) Then the garlands come off. Round, and round, and round, I go. I may actually break down next year and get some new garlands, as the current one(s) are broken all around. So, I sort of piece meal the garland around the tree.

3.) Then it’s time for the ornaments. One by one they come off. Then I wrap them in tissue paper, filling a special box until each and every one  of my beloved ornaments are safely tucked in for yet another year.

I always feel sad about this because I love so many of those little gems. I recall the places I have been and the circumstances around it’s acquisition.

4.) The lights are next. Not just regular lights, but the bubble lights that Hubby loves so much. Those must be carefully re-boxed so they do not break. This year I will need to hunt down some replacement bulbs.

5.) Once the lights are off, Then I start un-making the tree and packing the ‘limbs’ into a box. This is also a row upon row process, but with music in my ears I got that tree down in no time.

Later I will finish closing up boxes and then on Wednesday Hubby will pass these boxes up to me in the attic and I will drag them to their spot for another 11 months.

Another Christmas Come and gone!

What I Did This Past Weekend

Miss Marple 2

Our host is Gattina. Come join us and tell us what YOU did this past weekend! After all, you never know when you will need an alibi!

***************

Since I got my diagnosis on Friday for my heart, I’m feeling as though a tremendous burden has been lifted off of my shoulders. I know what it is, and it will not inconvenience me or anyone else. It’s just a little uncomfortable and perhaps, since I know what it is, I will forget about it and live flip flop free.

On Saturday I was looking for something to watch on the satellite and I found Leonard Maltin’s  best of “movie reviews” for movies that have gone under the radar. Two were foreign films. So last night Hubby and I watched one!

Headhunters. It is a Norwegian movie and I found I did have to speed read the sub-titles, but it was well worth it!!!

Headhunter

I was on the edge of my seat and could not believe the twists and turns. This is not for the squeamish, but if you like a good mystery movie, this is for you! I watched it on Amazon.com Prime for free.

I was about to take my Christmas tree down, and I heard that Sunday was Armenian Christmas and also the day the Kings arrived to see the baby Jesus. Somehow it just didn’t seem right. So, I did laundry instead

I made steaks and baked potatoes one night, and Buffalo Wings, celery with blue cheese and french fries on the other night. I’ve been counting my points and I am hopeful that Wednesday will be a good weigh in.

I go on Tuesday to see my Retinal Surgeon. I have been having a little problem with my eyes and i hope he can calm me and assure me that all is well.

I desperately need to get my hair shaped. My bangs are in my eyes, the crown of my head is flat and I look like I stuck my finger in a light socket. The woman substituting is wonderful, but I think she worries about cutting my hair.

I am not sure if I mentioned that my good friend and hair stylist is in treatment for cancer. Please keep her and her family in your prayers.

Well that wraps it up for now. Have a great week!

End Of The Season

You know, when it’s the Christmas season, I am all for getting the decorations out, and putting them up! I love it! Pretty sparkling lights, and tinsel and my little moving village with skaters! The first night that it is all done, I like to sit and turn off the regular lights and just enjoy the glow of the season.

Then Christmas comes, almost overnight, and then New Years, and then it’s time to take all this stuff down, and put it all away.

I started that practice on Saturday. I cleared the shelves, dusted and after wrapping the items I put the decorations in their special box until next year,

However, I couldn’t do it all. I left the village, the Christmas tree, and the mini dackel tree up. Tomorrow I will take two of those items and pack them up, and then do the tree on Monday.

Then, for another year it is over. Gosh it went so fast! I think next year I will put everything up the day after Thanksgiving.

Good News

I finally got in to see the Cardiologist. What a nice man he is! I have been diagnosed with having PVC’s. This is extra, abnormal heartbeats that begin in one of your heart’s two lower pumping chambers (ventricles). These extra beats disrupt your regular heart rhythm, sometimes causing you to feel a flip-flop or skipped beat in your chest. Premature ventricular contractions are very common – they occur in most people at some point. Many of them occur when you lie down at night. You feel your heart having this extra beat, and then a momentary skip until the heart starts again.

It is a harmless, benign, condition. Aside from this condition, I’m a very healthy 54 year old woman. I was so happy to be given such a happy report.

So this is the final verdict, and I am so relieved!

Friday Fill-Ins

Friday Fill-Ins

Friday Fill-Ins are sponsored by my cousin Janet. Come on and join the fun! And…here we go!

1. Let me have a fire in the hearth, a cup hot tea with a blanket and a dackel or two or three, and I can get through these long bitterly cold nights!.
2. I’m going through another phase of learning right now. I hope I don’t disappoint those I love.
3. Listen here: ya may not like me or how I handle life, but don’t you dare mess around with the people that I love, cause I’ll find ya and get ya!.
4. What are you talking about!
5. When I was younger, I thought that once you grew up, all your problems went away. I didn’t realize that that couldn’t be further from the truth!
6. Oh, I do love to laugh!
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to clearing the shelves of Christmas decorations, tomorrow my plans include weekend laundry and Sunday, I want to just hang out, perhaps making a fire in the hearth and cook a nice Sunday dinner meal!

Thursday Thirteen

Feb 8 tt13

  1. Here we are 2013. A whole new year, with many pages to be written on.
  2. This weekend I will work De-Christmasing the house.
  3. I want to go through all my ornaments and carefully put the ones I like away, and perhaps donate some others.
  4. I really need to lighten my load of ornaments.
  5. I would love to find LED lights for my Christmas window candles. The current bulbs get so hot and when I untwist them at night I burn my fingers!
  6. Hubby wanted me to ski today, but the temperature is supposed to be well below zero (f) and I do not freeze ski.
  7. I also will be seeing a cardiologist tomorrow, and I would hate to get to my appointment exhausted from skiing.
  8. I stopped in at the local grocery store today, to find out they were opening a pharmacy there.
  9. I was interested because our insurance changed for our prescriptions. So I stopped to talk.
  10. Soon they issued me a swag bag full of goodies!
  11. A pill container, a kit for taking on travels. Tissues and the cutest little tote bag!
  12. I’m starting to feel old.
  13. You know this when the bright spot in your day is getting a medical swag bag!

Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. How did you ring in the new year?

It started early, with my watching the Sydney, Australia fireworks online. I made special meals. Crab Quiche, and lamb chops. We had a nice bottle of bubbly that we split and as always, I shed a few tears.

2. What is one thing you are looking forward to in 2013?

Watching Miss Savannah grow! The last seven months have been the best! So I expect the next year will be even better!

3. Steven Spielberg is quoted as saying, “All of us every single year, we’re a different person. I don’t think we’re the same person all our lives.” What say you?

I hope that each year, as I grow and change, become a slightly better person. Recently, someone I love told me in a loving way, that I had a very annoying habit, they are right and now I need to work on that!

4. The Pantone color of the year for 2013 is emerald green. Like or dislike? Do you already own something this color? Will you add something in this shade to your home or wardrobe in 2013?

I am not a green person. It makes me look like the wicked witch of the west! My main color is blue. And nope, will not be adding this color to the house.

5. Speaking of emerald…what’s your favorite gemstone?

Black Opals. The ones I like are a dark blue with a shot of green going through them. These are mined in Australia!

January 1 13 012

Isn’t that beautiful?

6. Share a favorite book or movie from 2012.

The Descendents. Both the movie and the book! All I can say is wow! I am still shocked that George Clooney did not win Best Actor at the Oscars. He was incredible!

7. What is something you want to tell yourself at the start of this brand new year?

To think before I speak. It’s sad to say, but sometimes I speak and my brain is not engaged. Got to stop doing this!!!

8. Insert your own random thought here.

2013 I also plan to get back on the wagon with Weight Watchers. I have 5 months until Savannah’s birthday and so there is no excuse to be eating cake. Actually, I should just cut cake out of my diet, like I’m allergic or something! After all, I eat it and then I break out in fat! Tomorrow is the first Weight Watchers class since well before Christmas. I shudder at the thought of getting up on the scale!

Happy New Year!!!

Being Understood!

This was my favorite commercial on our TV this year. You know I recall feeling quite lost when I first went to Germany all those years ago. I recall feeling deaf and dumb because I did not speak the language or understand what was being said. People were kind and I did a lot of pantomime to get myself understood.

Over that summer I learned some German to speak it. I could order a meal, ask for the check, and most importantly, ask for a beer!

I did a lot of cooking, therefore I shopped each day. Thankfully there were a lot of pictures on cans, so when I wanted tomato sauce I could find it.

But just imagine that you are a child and it is Christmas in America. Your parents take you to see Santa and you get up to him, and and all you speak is German!

This commercial just touched my heart and made me recall when I was lucky enough to find someone who could speak English to me when I lived in Germany.

Snowy Days

So, what do you do on a snowy day like we had on Saturday? The weather forecasters said we would get light snow. Perhaps 1-3 inches. The National Weather Service in Grey Maine said 3-5. No one predicted the hard, at time blizzard like conditions that found me asking myself, why on earth I live this far north?

Nor did anyone predict the 20 car accident on the highway near my home. At least, thankfully, no one was hurt.

I admit that it was very pretty to watch it today. Hubby helped me and we made clam chowder from scratch. That’s New England Clam Chowder, all creamy and nice!

About the time that I set the chowder on the back burner to slowly cook, Hubby went outside to use the snow blower. I knelt in front of the hearth and laid a lovely fire. I have to brag a little in my ability to make a fire that not only catches quickly, but burns nicely and evenly!

This talent stems back to the early days of living in the house. The heat was only under the basement floor to begin with, and first one up in the morning had to make a fire to warm the house. I was always up first, and so I wanted that fire going strong fast and throwing a lot of heat!

Anneliese is better today. The pain medication seems to really be helping her.  I have had her out in the snow and she’s done just fine. Her medication is just a miraculous drug!

I just heard we may have more snow tomorrow. I’m simply not going to believe any of it!

I sure need a vacation to some place hot and dry right now! I’m really not enjoying the snowfall.

Bah!
