Eyes

This is a picture of me the day after my eye surgery in August.

Aug 23a 007

You can read about my 5 year long battle to regain my vision, here. I truly did not think I had a chance to regain my vision, but Dr. W. gave me hope.
Happily, on August 22nd my vision was restored in a very delicate operation. I feel like the luckiest girl on earth!

Clothes, Clothes, Clothes

Today I have spent a large portion of the day thinking about clothes. What clothes, you ask? The clothes I will wear on Saturday to show Greta at the Zuchtschau. Do I wear the ever slimming black pants that hug my derrière with a cream turtleneck and classic gray and cream Icelandic sweater, or do I wear some chocolate brown comfortable pants, with a wheaten turtleneck and classic light brown German edelweiss sweater with loden piping?

I asked Hubby. What did he like? What did he think looked good? He is the perfect husband. He liked them both and refused to commit.

So, I am packing both outfits and I will see how I feel on Saturday. If I am feeling young and wild and free, I will wear the brown. If I feel like hiding, I will wear the black.

I have gotten Greta’s crate ready and next I need to pack her food. I’d like to get everything but the toiletries packed in the car tonight. Then tomorrow I can relax and not stress. Well, not stress too much!

This morning I was sitting here reading mail when first Fritz jumped up in my lap, and then Greta. Hubby grabbed the camera and took this picture.

Have a great Friday everyone and I’ll write as soon as I can with Greta news.

Thirteen Things That Are Happening This Weekend

1. We are leaving Fritz with our friends while we are at the show.
2. On Friday Hubby, Greta and I are driving to New York State for a German Dog Club show. In German it is called a Zuchtschau. (Breeder’s Show or Breed Specific Show)
3. We will stay overnight in a motel with a king size bed.
4. We got the king size bed because Greta is a bed hog!
5. Saturday I will have to present the young Greta to the German judge.
6. He will examine her bone structure, her teeth, her fur and her eyes. He will tell me all the good and bad things about Greta, but he will do this in German. (A translator will interpret)
7. Then I will have to walk/run her around the tent until the judge has determined I have done enough.
8. Then at the very end of the event, Greta will be given her rating. An excellent, very good, or good will be enough for me to register the puppies in Germany. If she flunks, then the puppies can only be registered with the AKC.
9. Since Bernie, (Greta’s boyfriend) got an excellent rating and they are practically twins, I am hoping she will at least get a very good or excellent rating.
10. We will drive back to New Hampshire on Saturday night.
11. We will pick up Fritz on our way home.
12. We will arrive home late.
13. Where we will fall into bed and finally sleep!

Busy, Busy, Busy!!!

Oh my, what a day! I knew it was going to be a busy one. I looked at my date book last night and hit my head! Why had we scheduled so much on one day? Because we’re insane, that’s why!

Hubby picked 3 bushels of near perfect MacIntosh Apples, and sorted them.

Sept 19 018

While he was working on this I went out to get my monthly treatment at the Fountain of Youth. This is my time to be pampered. I love what my hairdresser, Margarita, is doing with my hair these days. She is fantastic and I really enjoy our visits.

No sooner had I raced home, than I made lunch for Hubby and me. We ate quickly and set off for Hubby’s appointment with our doctor. He had to have a small cyst removed from his earlobe. I stayed with him, even though I know he would have been fine without me. Mostly I was curious to see the entire event.

It, was fascinating! When it was finally removed, I was shocked at how large it was! I know, ewwww, but really, fascinating! Three stitches later and we were out the door.

We raced home and I grabbed Fritz and the two of us went to the Vets. It was time for Fritz’s yearly exam and shots. He was such a good boy and I was very proud of him. He weighed in at 76 pounds even, and was just so sweet with the Vet.

I came home to find that Hubby was gone and so was Greta. I knew Hubby was bringing our apples to a local farm stand to sell,

Sept 19 014

but I didn’t know he was going to bring Greta. It turns out that not only did he bring her, but he was showing her off all over town! Daddy’s little girl!

By the time he was back and the dogs were fed, we started dinner. Keeping it simple, we made tacos with all the trimmings. It was done, eaten and cleaned up quickly and finally I was able to relax.

Tomorrow? Nothing that has to be done. Just some laundry and some writing and visiting some blogs I haven’t gotten to in a while. I just love days of doing not much at all. Those are the best!

Pressing Grapes

Today was grape day here in New Hampshire. The Concord Grapes, so deep, dark and purple were harvested yesterday by Hubby. They grow wild on our property and all you need to harvest them is a good ladder and no fear of heights. Needless to say, that’s why Hubby did the climbing. I had to remove the grapes from the stems, clean them, crush them and cook them.
Once that was done I pressed them for their juice.

It is fairly labor intensive work, one I do with plastic gloves on because grapes stain skin unlike anything else. I could just see myself presenting Greta to the judge with purple fingers! Now that actually made me laugh while I worked.

Hubby picked more today, (giant frown) and I told him that he simply had to either sell them or give them away. I didn’t want to have to do more of this, as it is also apple season and in the next few weeks I’ll be making apple sauce to freeze.

It’s all been fun though, growing our own fruits and vegetables and then canning them to use over the course of the winter. Emily brought over a friend today and showed her all the things we have canned this year. The young girl’s eyes got very large in her head. I smiled and said that we’re getting ready for a big snow storm this winter 😉 .

Getting Ready

I finally made reservations for Friday night down in New York. I had been trying to find a room for Hubby, Greta and me, but found so many places didn’t allow dogs, or if they did, they wanted $35.00 a night for them! Bah! I guess I am getting cheap in my old age, but if I am paying $135.00 a night for a room, then accommodations for 1 eighteen pound dachshund shouldn’t be $35.00 more!

Around the time I was ready to give up I called a smallish motel in the town the dog show is in. Did they have a room? Would I have to mortgage my home to reserve it? Yes, they did have a room and no, I wouldn’t have to take out a second mortgage!

The woman who helped me sounded so nice. It’s a family run place and she will be there to greet us when we arrive. She also mentioned that there is a good restaurant nearby for dinner and a diner up town which serves an awesome breakfast!

Now I simply have to worry about packing, and what to wear. I want to look nice when I present Greta to the judge from Germany. Each year the club flies a judge over to rate the dogs, and preside over the show. He looks like a kindly man. I hope this is true. I am so nervous about this, that I am afraid I will do something really stupid, like fall into his arms when I walk up to the judging table!

Many years ago before the end of the Cold War, I went to St. Petersburg, Russia with Hubby. He was working the flight, so I was in charge of getting myself through customs so I could meet him on the other side and ride with the crew to the motel.

I was rushing and in heels and a ladies business suit. A recipe for disaster! I came down a ramp, which was being reworked, and had plywood all along it. Just as I got to the end, my heel caught and I went flying…right into the arms of a stern looking Russian soldier! I nearly died!

So you see why I am a little worried that I might do something that embarrassing again. There is a precedent!

I did somehow manage to make it through the dog show when Fritz won Best Puppy in show,

Fritz wins

(otherwise known here as “Fritz’s Glory Days”). I can only hope that I will stay calm and not be overcome by a hot flash!

Retail Therapy

I went to North Conway yesterday and was able to visit my favorite store, The LL Bean Outlet. I’m not usually lucky with Outlet stores. My size is usually gone and I end up buying things for Hubby. There is always a ton of tall man’s stuff there and he tends to make out like a bandit!
Yesterday, I made out like a bandit! I got:
A coral sand colored mock turtleneck.

M41887_Coral_Sand

A new cream fleece bathrobe for the winter.

M35012_Cream

A new pair of winter boots.

M38368_Black

And a new pair of lined ski pants!

M38425_Black

Yes, I felt heady with the purchases weighing down my arms. What a joy. We even went over to Liz Claiborne where I tried on a few things, coming away with a short sleep blue shirt and a new pair of brown trousers!

Ah yes, retail therapy. It doesn’t get any better than that!
