Winter Has Arrived

Thursday we had gotten about 7 inches of fresh snow and I think that spurred Hubby on to get up to the ski slopes. Of course he had to plow the driveway, so we could make it up the hill to the main road.

January 12 015

Friday was another wild day up here. A wintry mix, weather wise. I was up early with Hubby, who was determined to go off and ski. At that point it was snowing and very pretty to watch. Off Hubby went and the dackels and I sat snuggling in my chair while Fritz fussed and whined about his Daddy going off.

January 12 016

It started as snow, then switched to rain, then ice, then sleet, then a little snow, before stopping in the late afternoon, and the sun actually came out! Bizarre!

January 12 018

Hubby reports that he had good skiing, albeit somewhat wet. He called me around noon and asked me if I had been out to get our mail and to the grocery.

You might all recall the skidding accident last year that I had when I hit black ice and the Jeep and I went for a little unplanned trip! I also had a black ice skidding accident 12 tears ago when we first moved into the house. I’d actually gone to get the mail, and when I came back, the driveway was all ice and I skidded off the drive and into the ditch next to it.

Oh yes, I was shaking and crying and just wanted Hubby! I flung open the door, took one step out of the car and fell smack dab on my bottom!

So you might have guessed that by now, I have a healthy respect for snow and ice! Meaning, that Friday I stayed in.

Then I worried about Hubby. He was driving home from skiing, and usually he is back by 12 or 12:30, but on Friday he didn’t get in until 1:30!

Once he was home for the day I relaxed. The weather is set to change on Friday night, as a cold front moves in, dropping our temperatures into the single digits (f).

Ah yes, winter has arrived!

Thursday Thirteen

Dec 4 09 044

Wednesday, was a slightly strange day. Here are the things that made it both good and weird, all at the same time!

  1. I went to Weight Watchers and lost a pound. Yay!
  2. My goal during the holidays is to stay as close to the weight I am right now. After January first I will once again go into full diet mode.
  3. Today after class, three of us went to breakfast to celebrate my friend, Carol’s birthday! I did not eat like a Weight Watcher, but then, it was so late I ended up not eating lunch.
  4. After not being able to find our Christmas Tree’s lighted star, for the top of the tree, I decided after class and brunch, to go looking for one. I had no luck at all. They were all cheesy looking and expensive!
  5. So, I came home and decided to look around once again.
  6. I went through a box, that I personally had emptied of ornaments….and there it was!!!
  7. Dec 14 003

  8. I’m learning all sorts of things on the Kindle Fire. One think I am struggling with is installing the Adobe Flash Player. Perhaps it can’t be done?
  9. I have learned how to bookmark thinks and how to hook it up to WiFi. It was so cool to see Dackel Princess in the Kindle Fire!
  10. It’s a fairly cold and damp night. I asked Hubby to light a fire in the hearth.
  11. Oh it is wonderful and has finally warmed my hands and feet.
  12. Wish you could all see the dackels. They are scattered about the room enjoying the fire, as much as me!
  13. I’m starting to plan both Christmas dinner and the day after when Mandy and Matt come up.
  14. One thing I know for sure..on Christmas I am making pumpkin pie! I love it and haven’t had it in years! I’ll make apple crisp too…for Hubby and Mandy and Matt. Yep. I’m the only one who likes pumpkin pie!

Have a great Thursday!

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to cooking Hubby a steak, tomorrow my plans include laundry and a little Christmas shopping locally and Sunday, I want to cook a nice meal for Hubby and watch the Patriots!

Ah, Yeah!

Saturday was my one day to get off by myself and visit the local churches, that were all having their Christmas Bazaars. Foods, crafts, and fellowship.

I started off early at the Greek Church, as their food is the very best. I got spinach pies, stuffed grape leaves, and various baked goodies that Hubby loves.

I moved along to the Episcopal Church, and they had wonderful cookies and you filled a bag for $4.00. So I got a bag and filled it up.

Next I drove back to my home town to the big Catholic Church. I didn’t really buy anything, but I saw so many people I know from town. It was nice. I felt….at home.

On my way home I stopped at the top of my driveway to see my elderly neighbor. He is 93 and lives alone. He is a dear man, a Veteran and when I stopped, I hopped out of the car and knocked on the door and handed him the bag of Christmas cookies!

I came back to the house, walked the dogs, had my lunch and watched a movie with Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez. “Shall We Dance” . It was okay. A total chick flick, but I like Richard Gere, so it was a fun movie.

Hubby came home and I heated up the Greek Meat Pie that I got and the stuffed grape leaves. I had some mashed potato and my very own butternut squash. A good meal!

Of course right after I do dishes, Anneliese, Arnie and Greta all want to go outside to commune with nature. I hooked Anneliese up on the lead and started out, and she started to bark wildly and pulled against the lead to go up the hill!!! I heard guttural noises coming from the darkness, and something was moving out there! So I simply picked Anneliese up and ran into the house!

After a bit, I yelled out the door, for the mysterious creature to be gone!!! Then one by one, I walked the beasts. Oh, how afraid I was!!!

Fortunately, whatever was out there is now gone, and I was able to walk the dogs again without too much worry. Oh, I shall be very happy when the snow falls and I do not have to worry too much about the wild critters that come in the night.

What I Did This Past Weekend

Miss Marple 2

Our host is Gattina. Come join us and tell us what YOU did this past weekend! After all, you never know when you will need an alibi!

***************

While others in New England were buried with the first of the season snowfall, Hubby and I woke on Sunday to discover that we only had gotten 5 inches of the heavy wet stuff. The wind was fierce, so it had blown the snow from the trees, and the leaves as well. It is quite off to go from autumn to winter in one day!

Upon calling my family in various parts of the northeast I discovered that my daughter had no power, and she had about 20 inches of snow. My sister had no power and she had more than 5 inches of snow and trees were down everywhere.

My cousin, also had no power, and I actually didn’t find out how much snow she had, as all of my contacts were done via texting.

Hubby got the driveway cleared, and I have been providing hot, nourishing meals, to keep him going. Fritz helped him. Isn’t he a faithful dog?

Not too much else, really. Just the usual, laundry, bad TV and a little too much time playing solitaire. Tell me…do you play solitaire on your computer?

Have a great week everyone!

Oh yes, Happy Halloween!!!

Snowtober!

All day long, Hubby and I prepared. He picked the last apples off the trees, we put our patio furniture away, and then we waited.

Lunch time came and went and we tuned into the weather channel to see snow falling not too far away. But still, we had no snow.

Oh, how I love to watch the snow fall in all it’s fury. Today it was not to be, for our snow did not start to fall until well after dark.

Now I have been outside with Anneliese, who barked at the snow flakes and tried to bite them. It was so cute! We shall see what comes to us overnight and how much we get in the end.

Tomorrow I’ll take some pictures, but it simply would be terribly boring in the dark!

Snow in October?…… Snowtober!

Apples, Squash and Cinnamon!

I prepared a nice Autumn dinner on Saturday night. Pork, apple sauce, potatoes au gratin for hubby, and baked butternut squash. The house smelled like cinnamon and nutmeg, and the meal was warm and satisfying in our bellies! Perfect on a cool day like we had.

Sept. 23 031

Our apples.

I am so ready for the time when I can cook wonderful pot roasts and soups and stews.  In the summer I don’t really have any desire to cook large meals, even though I do. But in the winter, I love to cook them!

Every day I try to unfreeze a piece of meat, chicken or fish, and cook it up. Hubby is a grateful eater. He really appreciates all that I do putting meals together.

What’s your favorite thing to cook in the Autumn? Soups, Stews, Pies?

Autumn

The colors of Autumn are here and fading fast. They were not nearly as vibrant as some years, as we haven’t had a frost, but they are pretty none the less.

Across The Lake

This is the view from our house, which is nice, because today my eyes were bothering me and I didn’t feel like going out for a drive, but I did feel like enjoying the colors.

There are just a few apple trees left with apples, but the other fruit trees are bare, and their leaves are changing color to mostly a yellow color. A good wind will knock them down.

Sept 30 001

We have had a lot of apples, but this year was our biggest ever harvest for butternut squash! We had over 40 of them! For a woman who has been accused of having a black thumb and not being able to grow anything, thing years garden was my best ever!

I’ve noticed that Autumn has been mentioned in so many of my posts. I think, perhaps that is due to the fact that our Autumn has been so long.

What is your favorite part of Autumn?

Thursday Thirteen

Scav Sat

This weeks Thursday Thirteen finds me selecting some of my favorite things about the Autumn. There is so much and so here we go!

  1. Leaves. My favorite color is the bright coral that we get after a good freeze. Sadly we have not had a freeze yet!
  2. The skies tend to have cloudy and a stormy look to them and somehow, I like this!
  3. When I step outside in the morning or evening, I smell the sweet scent of a wood burning stove. Love it!
  4. When we do get out first frost, which should happen any day now, I love stepping on the grass in the morning and having it crunch beneath my feet!
  5. I also love putting away our air conditioners. All of them, except my bedroom air conditioner. Oh I just love the noise, the fan and the way it ends an errant hot flash! lol!
  6. I love Thanksgiving!
  7. I love turkey with chestnut stuffing, gravy and cranberry sauce.
  8. Butternut Squash, mashed potatoes and peas.
  9. Most of all, I love pumpkin pie!
  10. But usually Hubby wants an apple, so we have that.
  11. I love doing all the cooking too.
  12. Some of my recipes are in the cooking section if you are interested.
  13. Today is my 2710th post! I thought that was at least memorable!

Have a great Thursday everyone!
