The Last Of The Dog Show News

We are all settling down and I have stopped pinching myself to see if Greta has truly gone through with her conformation exam, and been rated. Excellent!!!! Did I say, Excellent??? Oh, pinch me again!

Hubby says I should tell you all what “really” happened at the show. So time to sit down and confess all. No, there were no hot flashes, nor did I fall on my face or faint dead away, but there was a sort of minor calamity. Just a small one, (of course Hubby caught this one with the camera!) and everyone laughed, so it wasn’t too bad.

You see, I was walking Greta around the ring, or should I say running her, as Greta was really moving out. All of a sudden she stopped and I kept going and the collar slipped off over her head! And there she stood all on her own, and there I was a few feet away. There were giggles, and I smiled at Greta, went back, slipped the collar over her head (with great difficulty) and off we went again. A little glitch, but nothing too bad.

It was far easier than I thought. There were no lightening bolts striking me down or large crowds of people judging me. No, everyone was very nice and everyone was there for the same reason. Their love of the dachshund.

Sept 23 040

Greta was such a trouper and she loved her prize. Which I think is an Opossum. Although one can never be sure.

I leave you know with one last picture. This is Greta and me as we snuggled in bed the night before the big event.

Sept 23 046

She is Excellent!

Greta was presented to the judge on Saturday. Was I ever nervous! I shouldn’t have been though. Put Greta in front of a crowd and she comes to life.

Sept 23 028
Greta with Herr Petersen

She pranced around and really was impressive. The judge deemed her without any faults! Everything was in order.

Sept 23 033

At the very end, when she had been awarded an excellent score, the judge turned to our Breed Warden and told her that there is only one breeder in all of Germany who breeds this color of wire-haired dachshund. He asked if she was in fact a Vom Geestmoor dog? Yes indeed folks. Greta is from the Vom Geestmoor Kennels in Germany!

Next they took all the dogs who scored excellent and walked them around the ring again. Then the best dog in show was awarded. Bernie’s sister won Best Dog in show, with Greta coming in a close second. Prizes were awarded to each dog. I allowed Greta to select hers.

Sept 23 039

More later, but for now it is late and I am truly exhausted!

Funny Little Greta

Greta is really hysterically funny. She loves to be outside with Hubby and me, and especially loves to “help” us work.

The other day, Hubby was picking apples. He’d gotten out his picking bucket and was about to start when I suggest this pose.

Sept 9 006

Now you see how she posed for this picture? What a ham, right? She does this all the time. It keeps a smile on my face, that’s for sure.

I’m really hoping she can work her magic on the German Judge. She is adorable, and she does know how to flirt, this could be a very good thing.

Greta, Beauty & Sex & The Single Dachshund

Next Saturday, September 23rd Greta goes before a German judge to receive her rating in beauty and form. I’m not too nervous about her beauty or form, as she is really exceptional, (in my humble opinion). What I’m nervous about is me. I’m the one showing her in front of all the other exhibitors and the judge.

Aug 31 003

You won’t believe me when I say this, but, I am shy. Most people don’t understand this. You see there are different kinds of shy. There are people who flush deeply when spoken to and find it impossible to speak. There are other’s who are reclusive and don’t go out in public. And then there are people like me.

I can be out in the world and speak to total strangers and I’m okay. It’s when I am in a crowd or I feel people are looking at me, (for whatever reason) that I become an emotional basket case. I worry that they will think I am fat or silly or clumsy, (I know I am and that makes it worse!). I feel sort of sick to my stomach and I often stammer. I’m much better talking to a sales person in the grocery store than I am getting up in front of a crowd.

So I have to do this. I’ve purchased a new pair of pants, a new bra, (a push me up and in type), a new shirt and I’ve been working on teaching Greta what a bribe is, in the hopes she will do just what I say. You know, “Will Work For Food”! Just another week and a half and it will be all over.

Greta will go into heat about that time and then we schedule her “night of passion” with Bernie.

When your dog’s sex life gets you this excited, something is very wrong. I lead such a little life.

Thirteen Reasons I Love Wire-Haired Dachshunds

1. Their comical personalities. People have often said that wire-haired dachshunds are the comedians of the dachshund group.
2. Their scruffy appearance. There is nothing neat about a wire, and even if you comb them to make them look groomed, they will shake and roll until they are scruffy again!
3. Their determination to do what they want. These little doggies, may be small but they have a mind of their own and aren’t easily swayed.
4. Their interest in children. I’ve yet to meet a wire-dachsie that didn’t love children.
5. The fact that these little creatures don’t realize that they are small dogs. Just last night Greta put an 80 pound Labrador in his place. After that she just had to look in his direction and he would go back to the dog bed and lay down.
6. Their loyalty towards their family. These dogs love their families like they are part of a pack.
7. Their beautiful big, brown eyes.
8. Watching them running after a ball or toy in the yard. Despite the little legs, they are poetry in motion.
9. They’re good car riders. Interested in watching the world go by in the car, and yet equally happy to lie down and sleep.
10. They’ve never met a piece of food they didn’t like, and they make no apologies about it!
11. They also enjoy their naps. Cuddled up with a person or in a warm blanket.
12. They love to strut their stuff walking down a street, or at the beach. They simply know they are the cutest thing on four legs.
13. And last but not least, the way that they have made me feel totally, completely and unconditionally loved.

Thursday Thirteen, Greta

1. When I wake up each morning, Greta is under the covers lying on her back with her feet stuck up in the air.

2. Greta can hardly wait for Hubby to wake up each morning. When he finally does she races over to him and squeals with delight!

3. She will chase Fritz around the house, just for the fun of it. But they are friends.

4. Her favorite place to sit is on the back of the sofa, where she can look out the window and watch the world go by. Should a cat creep into our yard or a person walk down the street, all heck breaks lose!
5. She doesn’t know she is a small dog and will go up the drive and bark at the Newfoundland Dog in the next yard.

6. She talks to you with all sorts of tones in her voice, and will keep it up until you pay attention to her.
7. She loves to curl up on my chest and tuck her head under my chin.

8. She claims all rawhide bones in the house are hers and will run Fritz off, growling and barking, from any bone he gets near!

9. She steals my seat and when I try to sit down she pushes me with her back legs. She tries to win this one, but never does!

10. She loves children. Most especially Matina, who arrives tomorrow.

11. She will jump up in Hubby’s chair and wag her tail wildly waiting for him to sit down with her.
12. She watches me, out of the corner of her eye, when I eat my meals. I know she is just waiting for me to drop anything so she can steal it!
13. Her nick name is Greta Garbo, and she actually will come if you yell, “MIss Garbo!” Yes, Greta just knows she is a star!!!

A Funny Little Girl

Greta is a funny little girl. She loves to be outside, but her nose gets her into a lot of trouble. As soon as she smells something interesting off she goes. Under a bush, over a stone wall, into the tall grass, we never know. Greta is like a two year old child. You must constantly be watching her, lest she slip away.
I’ve been talking to Hubby about that darn fence again. I have a feeling this is a talk we will have over and over and over. I think I have valid reasons to put up a white picket fence, but Hubby is still not convinced. Even when he comes into the house as he did today to ask for help when he “lost” her.
Me: “I think that a fence is a good idea.”
Hubby: “It’s fine, we don’t need a fence.”
Me: “What about my poison ivy?”
Hubby: “You’re the one who wants to sleep with your dog.”
Me: “What about when Greta runs off?”
Him: “Well, that’s your fault too. You should train her.”
Me: “If I win the Lottery, I’m putting up that fence!”
Him: “Over my dead body!”
Me: “That can be arranged.”
Until then, I will continue to campaign for the fence, and I will watch Greta like a hawk. How can a pup with the face of an Angel, be such a sneak?

Working On Greta

I love Greta’s new stripping comb! Last Sunday when Greta went to meet Bernie, his owner showed me the comb she uses to strip Bernie. She let me try it out on Greta. The first thing I noticed was that Greta seemed to like it. The second thing I noticed was what a nice job it did!
I came home and did all sorts of Blingo searches. I researched Sunday night and on Monday I ordered the comb. It arrived yesterday! Now that was quick!
I sat down in my chair and worked her over. The hair came out so easily. She never once wiggled or tried to get down. She loved it! Once I was done I sent her in to show Hubby. He couldn’t believe the difference! All the dead winter fur was gone and she felt smooth and looked so neat (As in neat as a pin, not neat as in cool. Although, come to think of it, she does look cool!).
I’ve been continuing to work on her face, legs and tail, and she is looking better. She is not nearly as fond of having those parts done as she is her back.
I’m learning so much about how to groom her and make her look her best. Why did I think that I couldn’t do it? With the right tools, it’s fairly easy to do.
