The Reunion, Part One

I suppose there is no other way to put this, but going on vacation often is more tiring than if you stayed home and didn’t go! Of course, we saw many places and visited people that we only see once every year or two, so that makes all the hassle worthwhile.

Now that it is over I will explain the event a bit more. Hubby served in the early 1960’s in the Army. He was a fixed wing pilot on the Otter and the Caribou Aircraft. Twenty-five years ago a few of the men who flew with Hubby in Vietnam started an organization of fellowship for these men and their wives. We joined 22 years ago, and have attended as many reunions as we could.

This year the Reunion was in Columbus, Georgia. Many of the men and their families were based here at one time or another. Hubby and his former wife even owned a home here. So there was a lot of reminiscing and a lot of touring around and visiting Fort Benning.

There is also the most fabulous museum dedicated to the men and women of the Infantry, right from the Revolutionary War to the present day. On Thursday we had tickets to tour The National Infantry Museum .

Quite honestly I thought it would be totally boring and I had Hubby and our friends drive out so that we could leave early if it was as boring as I thought.

How wrong I was! What a totally wonderful museum. I felt full of pride for our country, and the men and women who have served it. The displays were authentic and tasteful and so well done.

The time flew by as we received a docent-led tour of the museum and the World War II Buildings that have been moved to a site nearby. They had housed the Army forces at Fort Benning, and included a barracks, mess hall, orderly room and supply room. There was even a church which had been lovingly restored, and is still being used for weddings and funerals.

Hubby and Jim in Mess Hall.

When our tour was finished, we hopped in our rental car with our friends, and went on base. Both Hubby and Jim had served there and we drove around, as they looked for familiar places. Sadly, the base is not what they recalled and I think we all left feeling a bit disheartened that such a fine base is being wasted.

That night we went out for “Real Bavarian Food”. About the only thing that was authentically German in the place was the beer! We all ordered a cold tall one, and enjoyed every gulp!

I found that by the end of each day, all I wanted to do was collapse into bed and go to sleep. So forgive me for not writing everything out day by day. Trust me; I was on the go from early morning until late at night.

I will try to get it all written down before I forget. This was such a special Reunion and full of so many great times.

Stay tuned for Part two, tomorrow!

Oh What a Morning!

I woke up in the darkness and thought immediately that it must be time to get up and go. Looking at the clock, I silently groaned! 12:30 AM! So, I moved a dackel, turned over and went back to sleep, waking only a few more times before our 5 AM alarm.

The coffee was ready and I put two frozen sandwiches in the microwave to heat, then carefully wrapped them to take in the car. We were out the door by 5:30 and I felt like we were doing extremely well. That was until the rain began to fall, and the traffic became gridlocked!

As we neared Boston, the rain only seemed to increase and the traffic got heavier, and our moods began to plummet. We attempted to take the back way into the airport and all we ended up seeing were likely scenes from the movie “The Town” as we worked our way through Charlestown! Only, there was no handsome Ben Affleck standing on a corner, just a lot of wet, exhausted workers trying to get to their jobs.

We decided to park in the Economy lot, which meant that we ended up backtracking several miles only to be parked back in Charlestown! We grabbed our suitcases, and made our way through the puddles to the shuttle bus for our ride back to the airport.

Okay, we made it in time, just a tiny bit late. We checked in, and proceeded to security, where I zipped through, as I have learned all about 3 ounce bottles, and computers in their own basket and, oh yes, my shoes came off as well. But I was easy!

Hubby, on the other hand, was given the full treatment. You see, my bionic man sets off all the bells and whistles at the airport with his titanium knees!

I stood there waiting, while the nice young man felt my husband in places I haven’t touched since our honeymoon!

Eventually they allowed him to dress again and we proceeded to our gate. All appeared to be going well, until we heard those fateful words, “I’m sorry Ladies and Gentlemen, our flight has been delayed until 11:30 due to a mechanical problem.”

At first it appeared we would be alright. We could still make our connection in Atlanta, even with this delay. However, a short time later they announced the flight would be delayed indefinitely, then posted a 5 PM departure time, and then finally canceled the flight!

I looked at Hubby and frowned. What would we do?

End of part one.

Ugh!

This always happens. I am preparing to pack for a trip for Hubby and myself. I always have packed for him, and so I feel responsible for his cases being packed correctly.

At dinner tonight he mentioned the photo album that he put together of his days in Vietnam, the faces and places that he had known. As hubby was there in the early days of the Vietnam war, the pictures are mostly of the places he saw and the men he served with. It’s a great album.

My problem? I cannot find the bloody thing! I have looked in almost every nook and cranny in our house and discovered that besides my house needing a drastic cleaning, I cannot find this album!

So where is it? We bring it to each reunion that we go to, but we have not been in a while. I have stored the album at the base of the stairs in our house for years. So, why isn’t it there now?

It’s driving me slightly insane and I keep getting up and walking around looking for this album, like it will instantly appear. As you can guess, it hasn’t.

A few minutes ago, while I was sitting here trying to relax, I started thinking. When had we seen this last? What were we doing? In the last year was there a time we had it out?

I got up. I walked through the house again, and then something began pulling me to a cupboard in our family room. I opened the doors (I had been there before too) and looked and my eyes caught the corner of the album!

THERE IT WAS!!!!!

Oct 02

So I can sleep in peace tonight, with no worries about the album and best of all…I found my black sandals, which I will now wear with my black and magenta skirt!

All’s well that ends well!

The Count Down Begins

Saturday is a busy day for me. I’m going to visit Margarita so she can dip my hair in the fountain of youth and give me a good hair cut. I really need to work on the hair, as lately I cannot seem to style it at all.

I’ll get back here just after lunch, and I will do some housework to prepare for my guests tomorrow late in the afternoon.

My neighbors are all coming over to have a big spaghetti dinner with us, and to go over the last of my seemingly endless lists and instructions for caring for my pooches.

I realized this morning (again) just how much I love these fury creatures and how must they add to my life.

In the morning I wake to the gentle kisses of Anneliese. Arnie stretches and snuggles against my back, and Greta is always cuddled by my tummy. Fritz is always waiting next to my side of the bed for my feet to hit the floor, then I get kisses from him.

If I have to leave the house, they run to the door and either want to go with me, or they want me to stay. When I return, they dance with delight and I smile as I listen to their toe nails click on the floor.

I am so lucky, to be so loved!

Sunday is laundry, ironing and packing day. I want to have that all done by the end of the day so that on Monday I can attend my meeting and Tuesday we can do to a fly-in close by at a local airport. Then Wednesday we are off!

Hubby and I will have 5 days all to ourselves going to his Army Reunion. Our neighbors are moving in to care for the dogs and we will sleep late, walk hand and hand along sunshiny pathways, and I will not have to cook, clean, wash a dish or walk my beloved dogs.

You know me, I will be bringing along my computer, and will be reporting in with pictures and updates from the road.

Here is my one question. This is the dress for the banquet. It has these shiny (fake) stones around the collar. It would be easy to remove them, should I, or should I leave them?

We will be in a very hot area, so the sleeveless dress will be a good thing. It’s very light and flows nicely when I move. Think Hubby will dance with me?

Just This Side Of Disaster!

On Saturday, while trying to find owners of lost dogs, bake endless batches of zucchini bread and put together a homemade spaghetti sauce, I was confronted with an urgent problem.

Hubby was on the phone calling the Police about the lost dog, when he bumped his wine glass. As if in slow motion, I watched it fall, spilling the contents of his glass right onto the top of his laptop computer!

I ran around the breakfast bar and grabbed the laptop turning it immediately upside down, pulling out the cord, and pressing the power button, in what seemed like one motion! I stood there holding the laptop in this odd manner until I could decide what to do with it.

I propped the machine upside down and used a pot to balance it on so the keyboard stayed parallel to the counter top while it either dried or died.

It was dry in the house, and cool as well. We left the laptop like that for several hours before Hubby turned it on. Presto! It worked just fine. Apparently Dell computers like a little red wine now and then. Who knew?

The only long term casualty was Hubby’s cordless mouse. When I grabbed the machine to save it from being soaked by the wine, I damaged the receiver. More like ripped that little sucker out of the machine and tore it almost in half!

So today Hubby and I drove down to Wal-Mart to pick up a new mouse for him. He got exactly the same mouse that he had before as he really liked it.

We also bought 2 lobsters for dinner as the local Market is having a big sale this week.

Aug 2

So one big disaster was averted, even though another smaller one happened. I look at it  this way,  I would rather spend twenty dollars on a new mouse, than a thousand on a new computer!

Barbecues & Cute Dogs

Well my first day back at Weight Watchers was not as bad as it could have been, but then, not as good either. I decided to adopt the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy for this week, as I weighed in. I know exactly what I have to do, and now I just need to get on with it, and do it!

After the meeting I came home, stopping at the grocery long enough to buy some fresh fruit. I know that the more fresh produce that I eat, the better I will do. So I stocked up.

Then I came home and began to prepare for dinner guests. It was an easy meal of chicken and steaks with corn on the cob, potato salad and fresh fruit. Hubby dressed in his finest Barbecue clothes,

and the dogs got ready too.

While we dined outside on the patio with our friends, the moon began to rise and it was so beautiful that I grabbed my camera and snapped this picture.

We had a great evening, and it lasted fairly late, which is why I need to close this off and get myself into bed. The day will start fairly early tomorrow and I absolutely need my beauty sleep!

Happy Birthday Hubby!!!

Today is Hubby’s Birthday. Usually birthdays we spend doing something special. Dinner out, gourmet meal in, but today, Hubby is working and I have a meeting to go to as well. So any celebrations we share will be on Monday night or Wednesday night.

In any case, I wish my dear Hubby a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

22 Years & Counting…

Today Hubby and I are celebrating our 22nd Wedding Anniversary! We have been so lucky. Although we’ve shared the ups and downs that life throws at you, we’ve always managed to get through it because we had each other.

We were friends for a long time before we fell in love. Perhaps that is the key to a long relationship. Being friends first.

Whatever it is, we are blessed and thankful to have shared this time.

Happy Anniversary, Sweetheart!

Home

You know it really is wonderful. After a few little skirmishes (minor, really), the crew has settled in and every one is getting along. For a while Fritz was afraid of the little guy, but this morning I found them this close together.

Feb 9 10 007

In fact, Fritz really calmed down and actually likes Bogey. He lies down with him and while Bogey sleeps, Fritz chew on his bones and watches over him.

Feb 9 10 003

The other little rivalry has been between Arnie and Bogey. Not that Bogey has felt this, but Arnie sure has. I have been spending time each night snuggling with my little man and assuring him that he is still my one and only!

Then today Arnie started to play with Bogey! I was shocked! They ran in the field together, and played in the house afterward. I even got this picture of them in front of the fire that I got going today!

Feb 9 11 002

They look so comfortable together that I finally felt at ease.

Feb 9 11 001

So if Bogey’s parents check the blog, worry not! He is happy and healthy and having a good time with the rest of his birth family.

PS: Hubby did the most romantic thing this morning. When the dogs got up this morning, Hubby got up with them and let me stay in bed!!! Now that is real love and the most romantic thing a man can do for his wife!

LOL!!!

*****Snow*****

I knew we would have a lot of snow. I think it was about 8-9 inches. Hubby was up early and blew the snow off the driveway. Then the two of us went off to the computer shop to get his computer fixed. They told us it would take 2-3 days.

Then we came home and let the doggies play outside. They had such a good time.

I de-cluttered the shelves in my closet and will work on the clothes on Wednesday. Tuesday I have a dental cleaning and a meeting with a woman’s charitable organization. That will be enough for me, I think.

As it is, tonight I am tired and I think I will entertain myself with some mindless TV.
