Lyndsey Vonn

I love to watch sporting events. I love to watch ones that I know I could never in a million year succeed at. So, when Lyndsey Vonn was skiing the Super G, I could hardly wait to watch her. She has all the style and grace on skis, that I do not!

Lyndsey always skis harder than most all of her competitors. Sometimes to her own peril! But how proud we all were at the last Winter Olympics in 2010 in Vancouver, she got the Gold Medal in the Downhill and the Silver in the Super G.

Disciplines Downhill, Super-G,

Club Vail SSC
Born October 18, 1984 (age 28)
St. Paul, Minnesota, U.S.
Height 5 ft 10 in (1.78 m)
World Cup debut November 18, 2000 (age 16)
She is pretty and shows a fierce determination when she is out on the course. That was why it was so painful to watch her fall the other day and end her season, and perhaps her career.
I really hope she will mend fast. She has a broken leg, and tendon damage. You can watch the video below and understand just how bad the fall was. She still hopes to make the Winter Games next year in Russia. I hope so too.

1. Chinese New Year will be celebrated on February 10th, and 2013 is the year of the snake. When did you last see a snake?

Easter 2010

The Easter Snake from Dackel Princess Maribeth on Vimeo.

Are you okay around snakes or do they give you the shivers?

I do not like snakes!

2. The color red in Chinese culture usually means good luck. Do you believe in luck?

Some. Mostly I believe you make your own luck!

3. sledding-ice skating-building a snowman…if given a choice, which activity would you choose? Which of the three have you done most recently?

I loved to ice skate as a child, now I think sledding is the way to go!

4. Ralph Waldo Emerson is credited as saying, “The years teach much which the days never knew.” Where have you seen this quote played out in your own life?

After my car accident I literally lost it for a long time. It took many years, and a lot of work to find myself again.

5. When was the last time you ate a cupcake?

I’m not a big cupcake eater. So, I can’t honestly tell you. Perhaps last Easter. I think my cousin made some.

6. What’s something you can’t say no to?

7. Are you a doodler?

Nope.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

I saw my doctor on Thursday about my skin cancer problems. Time for the referral to a Dermatologist who specializes in Cancer. I’m not too worried. The skin cancer I have had before is easily removed, and I am far past the stage in life when I dream of creamy clear skin.

This ‘N That

Today I am off to see my doctor about my nose. Before anyone starts to worry that I may go for a Michael Jackson type surgery, let me assure you that this is not the case.

July 10 2008 I had surgery to remove a Squamous cell carcinoma on my nose. All has gone well, until about 6 months ago, when the area got bright red. I kept rubbing moisturizer in and then it dawned on me, perhaps the cells have grown back?

Hubby is trying to keep me calm, but I’m really worried about it. Actually, I would like to go to a specialist, strip out of all my clothes, and have them check me from head to toe.

I know, dramatic, right? Well, it just seems like everyone I know has had some sort of cancer, and I am scared to death mine has come back.

In any case, I will go and see if anything further needs to be done.

I’m so happy my team won the Super Bowl. So happy for Michael Oher!

I am happy the little boy in Alabama, that has been rescued after being kidnapped! What a blessing for him and his parents.

Monday was shower day for the dackels. They all got a nice bath and smell so clean! We have also removed a ton of fur from them. Their winter coats!

Hubby and I have become fans of No Reservations: Anthony Bourdain. It’s on at 2 PM here and Hubby and I try to catch it when we can. I swear, that man is crazy! But in a very good way! I can see Hubby doing what Tony has been doing. He has always had a travel bug inside of him.

In his youth, Hubby traveled the world and did, and saw almost everything. There are two trip left on his Bucket List. I sure hope we can get them in some time.

What I Did This Past Weekend

Miss Marple 2

Our host is Gattina. Come join us and tell us what YOU did this past weekend! After all, you never know when you will need an alibi!

***************

As it was Super Bowl Weekend, I did a fair amount of appetizer preparations. Even when it is just Hubby and me, I still try to make things festive. I prepared a 7 Layer Mexican Dip, and then I also prepared Steak Fajitas. We hadn’t had them in a long time, and so I thought it might be nice. And it was!

On Friday we drove down to Concord as I had a problem with my winter coat. I had washed it and it shrunk! Well, LL Bean Guarantees their clothing and boots, no matter how long you have had them. So I brought the coat back.

You might recall last January 22, 2012 I had brought in my much loved blue jacket (see me in Germany in the sidebar) for a new zipper and was talked into getting a new coat. You can read about it here, but that coat never really thrilled me, and then when it shrunk, well, back to the store it went.

I really love LL Bean. They checked the old coat out, gave me a gift card for the full value, and then I was able to take my time looking for a new coat.

At first I saw nothing and then there was a rack with winter parkas marked down and then another 30% taken off. So I started looking, and there it was!

My new parka

So between my gift card, and a few coupons I had, Hubby got 2 pairs of pants and I got this coat for $6.95!

Interestingly, this parka is a sister parka to the one I loved so much and had for 6 years before the zipper broke. (see sidebar)

Greta and I went visiting on Sunday. She just loves our neighbor and our neighbor loves her too. I used to bring Shubi up, but now Greta is the favored one. It was a good time.

Well that wraps it all up. Have a great Monday everyone!

(PS: Today would have been my Grandma Honey’s birthday. I still miss her and send my love to her in Heaven)

Super Bowl Sunday

Super Bowl!

Yes, it’s Super Bowl Sunday 2013! The Super Bowl here in the USA is almost a holiday. It’s a strange thing, but at the ripe old age of 54 I can remember the very first Super Bowl played.

The Vince Lombardi Trophy is awarded to the Super Bowl winner. Vince Lombardi was the much beloved coach of the Green Bay Packers.

Super Bowl I was played on January 15, 1967, following the 1966 regular season, while Super Bowl XLVII will be played on February 3, 2013, to determine the champion of the current 2012 season.

They only use Roman Numerals to designate the number for the Super Bowl being played.

I think I can safely say I have watched almost all of them. Especially the ones where the New England Patriots played. But even when they didn’t, I would go to parties and while others watched the games and enjoyed appetizers, I would enjoy the food and watch the commercials.

So, what do I have on the menu for Hubby and I tomorrow? At noon I will make up a 7 layer Mexican dip and let is chill.

While that is going on, we’ll enjoy some Shrimp Cocktail and bread sticks.

At 3:30 we will enjoy the 7 Layer Dip. I’ll also pop the cork on some champagne, cheap of course! Then at 6:45 I will saute up the onions and peppers and the steak for Steak Fajitas! I haven’t made that in a while, so I’m very excited.

I will be so interested to see who wins this Super Bowl. I’m rooting for the Raven’s. I would like to see Michael Oher and his teammates all win and get Super Bowl rings!

Do you party on Super Bowl Sunday?

Friday Fill-Ins

Friday Fill Ins

Friday Fill-Ins are sponsored by my cousin Janet.

Come on and join the fun!

And…here we go!

1. Sniff, sniff…what is this? Another cold?
2. I’m not a big sports fan, but I do enjoy The Super Bowl and all Tennis.
3. What in the world will bring peace back to this country.
4. Silence, peace and quiet.
5. One of my dreams is to travel more.
6. Sometimes I feel like I can only eat so few things otherwise  I gain weight.
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to kicking back and relaxing, tomorrow my plans include doing some cooking and Sunday, I want to Super Bowl!

Housework…

Laundry. Oh how I just hate to do it. I tend to let it accumulate until you can barely walk across the laundry room floor, and then I grouse, and spend a day or two ‘doing it’. Tuesday was that day for me. I had so much laundry in the mix, that it will take me three days of washing, folding and putting away.

Now this will tell you that either we have a multitude of underwear, or we enjoy going commando, (sans underwear) which I can assure you, is not the case!

Day two will find me washing up the last of the towels and household rags. (Those are old underwear that have become dust clothes and window cleaners.)

Day three will be slip covers and the last of the sheets! And if I am not laundered out, I would love to wash the curtains in the bathrooms.

What brought up all this energy to do so much cleaning and washing? It’s hard to explain, but here goes.

I was rereading the blog from back in 2005. I realized that back in the days of dial-up, I was actually getting far more done. Here I am in 2013 and I have become a computer junkie! Yup, hardcore, computer, got to have it, junkie!

So my goal for a bit is to get more house work done, and for every two hours of work, reward myself with 15 minutes on the computer.

Of course, evenings are my own, at least after I do the dinner dishes and walk the dogs.

How have your lives changed in the last 8 years? Are you on your computer more or less? Do you use your cell phone more like a computer?

Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. In the USA this coming Sunday millions will be watching as the Baltimore Ravens take on the San Francisco 49’s in the Superbowl. What was the last event you attended that could be described as super?

The birth of Savannah. I sat there waiting and then Matt’s parent’s arrived and we all went in and there was my daughter, and her daughter! WOW!

June 01 12 030

That was really something!

2. Share something you’re a fan of these days?

Hubby is being driven insane, as I have discovered HGTV! I love that station. I love the renovation shows, the house hunting shows and all that go along with it. Hubby grumbles and ignores the TV.

3. How do you feel about wings? In case anyone is confused, I’m talking the edible appetizer kind. What’s your preferred seasoning on a wing-hot, mild, teryiaki, sweet and sour, other? Do you make your own or is there a favorite place you like to go for wings?

Love ’em! We get a package of fresh cut party wings (not frozen), and brush them with Emeril’s Wing Sauce, and bake them. OH Man! Soooooo good!!!!

4. As long as we’re talking sports today…have you followed the Lance Armstrong story? Did you watch his interview with Oprah and if so what was your reaction to his confession and subsequent remarks?

I know about it, but did not see the interview. I’m so disappointed in him, as I was with the ball players who juiced themselves. To have it all, and then throw it all away!

5. What’s a question you hate to be asked?

How many children do you have? You see, I do not like to lie and say one, but in fact Mandy is all I have now. I did have Katie too, but she is gone. So what do you say about this? One or two? I usually slide past this and talk about Amanda and Savannah and if pressed mention Katie. Then I feel guilty for not just saying two daughters. It is so tough. But then speaking about Katie, and the pain of her loss, is very personal.

6. The coaches in this Sunday’s big game happen to be real life brothers. Jim Harbaugh coaches the 49er’s and his older brother John Harbaugh coaches the Baltimore Ravens. Were you and your sibling(s) competitive? In what way? Are you still? If you’re an only child how did you handle competition growing up?

I had an older brother and I have an older sister. There said. My brother died from Cancer at the age of 26. My brother had Cerebral Palsy and at times he resented me (7 years younger), because I could run and move in ways he could not. I was also the baby of the family. My sister was closer to his age, and she was his protector. They were very close. My sister and I have always been close. I am her baby She always took care of me.

7. What’s your favorite game involving a ball and when did you last play?

I am not sporty in any way. I do love to watch tennis and will be glued to the TV during all the majors. In fact I love tennis so much that I upgraded my satelite coverage last year so I could watch the US Open. Tennis.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

Hubby is outside blowing the snow that fell yesterday. We’re due for ice tonight from 10-8 am. I do not drive on ice. Tomorrow is Weight Watchers day, but if it is icy, then I will stay at home.
