Laptop is in the shop. So I thought I would try my kindle for posting an update. It didn’t work with the visual settings, but seems to work with my html settings.
What I Did Last Weekend
Our host is Gattina. Come join us and tell us what YOU did this past weekend! After all, you never know when you will need an alibi!
***************
I was feeling oddly reminiscent this weekend, and often found my self thinking about my grandmother, Grandma Honey. In so many ways she was my role model, and someone who definitely made sure I understood the rules of life. How I wish she had still been alive when I could have used her advice the most.
So I wrote about her, and then I wrote about things she would have said, if she had still been here. Somehow, I felt comforted.
Friday I was not too busy, so Hubby and I went off to see the movie “The Descendants”. Great movie, with George Clooney in the best acting job ever for him. In fact the movie touched me that I came home to see if it was a screenplay or adapted from a book. Lucky for me, it came from a book! I checked Amazon, and down loaded the book and started to read. I read in between doing the laundry all day Saturday. I was lazy about doing the laundry this week, so I had 6 loads to do, which is almost unheard of for me.
I washed dried and folded everything, and put it all away, then cooked our dinner last night. Baked potatoes and a London broil steak. Good.
Sunday morning, Hubby dragged me out of bed…no kidding…and forced me to go and ski. Now it was 4 degrees (f) and there was a stiff wind. He stopped to get a quick breakfast at McDonalds, and soon we pulled up at Gunstock. It was crowded and cold and rather miserable. It was the kind of cold hitting you between your eyes, piercing your head, like an ice cream headache, but with out the ice cream! However, I skied, and when my toes and fingers were numb, we went back to the lodge, changed and then off we went to get the grocery shopping done.Tonight I still feel a bit numb.
When we arrived home, I started to make lunch and I clicked on the propane stove and NO PROPANE! We were completely out. Hubby was worried we might starve, or be forced to eat peanut butter, but I assured him that I have many ways to cook a meal. Rotisserie grille, electric frying pan, toaster oven, microwave, and crock pot! I managed to make mashed potatoes, butternut squash and salmon pin wheels for dinner. Not a problem at all.
Then things kept going wrong. My laptop computer mouse died, Norton anti virus was defeated and suddenly I had viruses controlling the computer and I couldn’t get things under control for several hours. I was a wreck!
I am also feeling sad about Whitney Houston. So much talent, and yet all those insecurities eating away at her. She probably never knew that she was loved. Sad.
So that wraps up my weekend. It was busy and crazy and most of all…COLD!
Have a good week everyone!!!
Value
Recently an acquaintance of mine has been presented with a difficult situation. She has lost sleep, cried tears of sorrow and asked for God to ease her pain.
Not knowing exactly what to say, I began to think, quite deeply about the value of people in our lives. Sometimes it is difficult to see their value, and other times, it’s very ease.
Back when I was born, my other Grandmother thought my parents were quite reckless to have another child. Three children! Oh dear. In fact she saw so little value in my birth, that she did not tell her family back in Canada of my birth. My great aunt Mamie, and I met when I was 30 years old! Mamie was 92!
I was talking to my mother about it on Saturday and we agreed that the fact that she had my sister and me has been a real blessing to her in her old age.
You see, sometimes we can’t see the full value of the people in our lives when, perhaps we should.
My acquaintance, is finding that as much as she loves and cares, her feeling are not being returned. In fact, the people involved are being cruel and find no value in her at all.
I told her that God doesn’t make junk. There are times we are tested, and we have to persevere. After all, we ourselves know, we have VALUE.
For many years, I was angry at my mother for bitter words we had exchanged. I didn’t visit, I didn’t call. I was cruel.
But then, I began to see the value of my mother. She will be 83 this year. I’d better stop being so haughty, and start finding the love, because if I don’t she’ll be gone and I will never have the chance to tell her…
Mom, you have value to me in my life.
So, my advice to my acquaintance was to give the worries to God. Let the Lord handle it. You cannot make someone like you, even if your feelings for them are pure. Some people will, sadly, never know the value of those who love them.
Memories Of Days Gone By
When I was skiing the other day I suddenly had thoughts of my Grandmother. She would have turned 114 on February 4th if she were still alive. Grandma honey, was a great person to have as a grandmother. She was a tough, but tender, and loving woman. She would do anything for her friends and family!
When she still lived in Boston I remember going to her house. In my mind I can still see my grandparents house. It was large with a down stairs apartment and then their part of the house on the second floor and then on the third floor another apartment. In the down stairs apartment lived my grandfather’s sister Hedwig and her husband Albert. What I remember most about them was Hedwig’s fabulous cooking. It seemed she always had cookies and hot cocoa when I would sneak down the back stairway to visit her.
The middle floor was my grandparents part of the house. It was very large with a screened porch in the front, a phone on a table in the hallway, and then a big living room which led into a large dining room with a bay window, I often sat there looking out of the windows. This led into a kitchen with an old fashioned pantry. I loved this little room because I could climb up on the counter and find cookies. (yes, I admit, I am a cookie monster!)
Off the kitchen was a hallway that led to a big bathroom, and then my grandparent’s bedroom next to that. I remember going into their bedroom in the early morning and climbing into bed with them for cuddles. Papa Fred and Grandma Honey really loved their grandchildren.
Upstairs was where my uncle, his wife and their two kids lived. Originally this was where my mother and uncle had their rooms when they were kids. When we stayed there I would sleep in my cousin’s room.
But Papa had a heart attack and the doctors wanted them to sell the house and move to a one level . So they moved down to Cape Cod, near us and bought a little two bedroom ranch house.
I would run through the woods between our house and theirs and sleep over at Grandma and Papa’s. They would watch “Lawrence Welk, and I would watch them. Papa would gently hold Grandma’s feet in his lap. He would rub them, and she sat there, with an afghan over her lap, smiling at him and the music would play.
She would make us the best warm milk around. We had the whole milk (from a glass bottle. Fresh and whole!), honey and then a dot of real butter. Trust me, it was wonderful. Her hot chocolate was fabulous too!
I felt so safe in her arms, in her lap and I always loved having her as my grandma. Sadly, my other grandmother died when I was in third grade, so I never had a chance to know her the way I knew Grandma Honey.
I moved in with her at the age of eleven, and I lived in their house until I was 17, nearly 18 years old. She lived until I was 26 years old, and then passed from this world. But, my memories are good, and the impression she made on me will be with me for the rest of my life
Friday Fill-Ins
And…here we go!
1. When it comes time to make a decision, I procrastinate something fierce. But eventually the decision gets made and most of the time I can live with my decisions even though they might not be easy to make.
2. “And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make”., that must be the rule.
3. Ma says, eat your vegetables.
4. I’m working on losing a few more pounds at the same time I’m getting ready for the cruise.
5. I never saw the Beatles play in person, but their music is the music of my heart and soul.
6. The love of a person and their dog is not a new invention.
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to I don’t know, probably relaxing and getting to bed early. I am so tired, tomorrow my plans include walking around the Ice Fishing Derby and Sunday, I want to pick up a few things at the grocery store, and perhaps stop at the Outlet Mall!
Thursday Thirteen
The Cruise Edition
This week I will tell you about our upcoming vacation. Our house sitter is ready, but we have not told the dogs as they all seem to go into a little depression the first few days we are gone. Thank goodness we have such a great sitter, as she gets them feeling good and by the time we get home, they have hardly missed us.
- We are taking a cruise in the western Caribbean. Places we have not been before.
- Here is a picture of the itinerary. I think it will be fun to have two sea days to rest and relax. Hubby is not so sure.
- We’re going to fly down to Miami to see an old friend of ours. We have not seen Benn since Shubi became ill six years ago.
- I will be going swimming with the Dolphins in Grand Cayman. I plan to get a small waterproof camera to take pictures. Yes. Me and Flipper!
- Both Roatan and Belize are places I have wanted to go and see. We’ll be taking tours at both places.
- We are going out to the Ruins in Cozumel on a tour. I hear they are really amazing. Don’t worry I will take a lot of pictures!
- The Ship we are sailing on is The Crown Princess. And before you ask, yes, this is the ship that has had so many cases of Noro-Virus.
- However, I am choosing to be positive. Hubby and I will be just fine!
- I did visit Rite Aid yesterday and purchased Pepto Bismol, Imodium, and hand sanitizer. I understand that kleenex is also helpful, as is antibacterial soap and a nail brush!
- I got my mail yesterday and found a Jury Summons for the end of my cruise. I went right down to the court house today and I have asked for a deferment. I sure hope they have pity on me!
- Hubby and I really need this vacation. It’s like a little breath of fresh air!
- When I get back, we start the count down to grand-parent-hood!
- Okay cruise! I’m ready for you! Are you ready for me!!!
Wednesday Hodgepodge
1. What is something you are loving right now?
Butternut squash, and my Kindle Fire. I know strange combination, but we have been eating a lot of butternut squash from my garden (still), and it is just the very best!
My Kindle Fire is wonderful, for reading, checking the weather and the internet when I am not home, but at a WiFi enabled area. Love it!!
2. Paris, Venice, New York, and Rome are considered four of the most romantic cities in the world. Which one would you most like to visit?
Probably Paris. Not simply for romance, but for their wonderful museums and food! Hubby has been to all the museums and we hope to go one day so I can visit them as well.
3. Are you a romantic?
Oh yeah, I really am. Which can drive Hubby insane, as he is not. But we have somehow worked it out, and are happy with the compromise.
4. What’s your favorite love story made for the Big Screen?
Oh goodness, I remember sobbing when I was a teenager and watched “Love Story”. But now, I love the movie “The Ghost & Mrs Muir”. Their love, that transcends time, is beautiful.
5. Everyone loves Pooh bear and friends…which character are you most like and why?
Tigger. Lovable and slightly goofy, with a big heart!
6. What’s the best chocolate something you’ve ever eaten?
Chocolate Peppermint Bark! I am addicted, so I do not eat it!
7. Share a favorite quote about love.
“It seems right now that all I’ve ever done in my life is making my way here to you.”-Robert Kincaid (Clint Eastwood), The Bridges of Madison County (1995)
8. Insert your own random thought here.
It’s the best thing in the world, when you are married to your best friend, your lover and even after 24 years, wouldn’t want to be anywhere else!
Skiing, Sleeping, & Snuggling
I was thinking, as I rode up on the chair lift this morning, what I could possibly write about on Dackel Princess. I’m feeling post Super Bowl let down, the dogs are not doing anything particularly cute, and about the only thing that is happening, is that I actually offered and planned to go skiing with Hubby on Monday!
Usually, he has to bribe me. Today, when the alarm went off at 7 AM (*groan*) I got out of bed, threw on my warm clothes and then made our breakfast before leaving for the slopes at 8 AM.
The parking lot was nearly empty, and the lodge was too. Perfect! Today, it was all us old-timers, and I have to say, it was wonderful!
You know what was really great? There was a class of 65+ year olds taking a beginners skiing lesson! I was really impressed. See? Life isn’t over when you reach retirement age!
After we skied, (another two hour morning), we came back, picked up the mail, and then came home to four happy doggies! I let them run and then we came in and I made Hubby a little lunch.
As soon as we got done eating, I grabbed my blanket, a nice pillow, and lay down on the sofa for a nice long nap! Arnie was the first to arrive and settled down by my knees. Then Greta snuggled up by my chest, and just as I started to drift off to sleep, Anneliese came over and fell asleep on my side, with her head on my shoulder.
We slept all cozy, for an hour and a half before I woke with a small muscle twitching in my leg. Each pup gave me a welcome back kiss, as I got up from my dreamland!
It was such a nice day. Skiing, sleeping and snuggles! How good does it get?
Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder!
Ricky Skaggs and his band, Kentucky Thunder, really know how to put on a show. I’ve never been a big fan of country music, but bluegrass is different. It makes you want to get up and dance!
Ricky was an amazing host during the evening. A talented singer and songwriter, his performance is still flawless, after 50 years in the business.
In between sets, while he would tune his instruments (I think he played three different ones) he told wonderful stories of his boyhood, his youth and breaking into show-business.
His band members, all became well loved by the crowd. What a talented group they are. Especially Andy Leftwich, the fiddle player. I tried to find a cut on YouTube that showed his skill, but I couldn’t. Suffice to say, if these guys ever make a stop in your area, go see them! You will not be disappointed.
We also loved the tenor singer with Ricky named Paul Brewster. He sang Kentucky Waltz and I was touched by his perfect tenor voice!
Despite my fear of crowds, I found none of this was a problem. The venue was smaller than most, and very open.
Our seats were in the 6th row on the left in front. Great seats! I felt quite relaxed the entire time, giving me hope that I can get over my fear of concert halls!
Pond Hockey
Each year our quiet winter is disturbed by two wonderful events. The Annual Pond Hockey Tournament, and the Annual Ice Fishing Derby.
I live in an area surrounded by lakes, and during the summer, our population swells to nearly triple the size of it’s year round population. In fact after a long summer I am often glad when the tourists go home, and my little town reverts back to it’s charming small self!
However, even charming gets boring after a while. So, when the Pond Hockey and the Ice Fishing Derby come along with the tourists, I welcome them with open arms! (As do our restaurants and hotels!)
The Pond Hockey is happening near my house, so today I walked down, with my ice treads on my boots, and my camera in hand to report on the events!
As I walked down the hill, I caught my first sight of the hockey rinks. 18 separate rinks set up for the teams in New England to play on.
I found this sign to be slightly amusing, don’t you? I learned that this lake has 12 inches of ice on it! I watched cars and pick up trucks drive around and there was not one crack!
As you can see, there were a lot of people there! The players, their families and lots of children! I walked the length of the festivities, and then stopped to talk to my friend Kevin from Kevin’s Cafe and see how things were going. He was selling coffee, hot chocolate, sodas and crab cakes, which are his signature recipe!
The next picture was taken from the sky. All those little ants are actually players practicing on Friday. Amazing, isn’t it?
Sunday is the last day of this event. I’ll report in on Monday which team won the tournament.
