Happy 14th Birthday, Greta!

Today is Darling Greta’s 14th Birthday. She is the oldest doggy I have ever had. It’s been one heck of a ride. Two beautiful litters of puppies, 5 puppies in each litter (10), the mother of our Arnie and Anneliese, and the Matron of our four dog crew.

Greta is fierce, gentle, funny, warm and bossy. She was so dark when we got her, and now her fur is nearly white, as she has aged.

It’s funny, when I wake in the night, I always know which dachshund is Greta. Her whiteness stands out in the dark.

I know her time on earth is coming to a close, and as painful as this is for me, I am grateful, beyond words, to have had this wonderful doggy as my constant companion these last 14 years. She truly has been, such a blessing.

Snowing

Yes, it’s snowing again. I am not sure how much, but I suspect it’s close to 8-10 inches. The dackels were not amused! They are forecasting another few inches before it stops. And to top it all off, it is supposed to snow again tomorrow!

I was notified by UPS that my package is delayed due to weather and a natural disaster. Then I heard that a huge UPS tractor/trailer truck slid off the Turnpike here in New Hampshire! I bet my package is on that truck!

Oh yeah, it’s pretty, but I am so over winter! I sure wish that the snow would stop and then melt, and the sun would come out and the temperatures return to a descent 68-78 degrees!

Meanwhile, Brrrrrrrr!

Happy Birthday Quinn!

As we sit here in New England awaiting the arrival of Winter Storm Quinn, in our family we are also celebrating something else!

Today is the actual birthday of our grandson Quinn! It doesn’t seem possible that it has been only two years, and yet, I will say, I can’t seem to recall a time before Quinn was a part of our lives. When he was born he fit right in.

I was lucky enough to be there right after his birth. I brought Savi up to meet her brother, along with Matt’s Mom, Mary. I could not believe how beautiful he was!

I changed some of his first diapers while Mom and Dad rested and Mary and I and Savannah took turns holding Quinn. Our beautiful, fair-haired baby boy!

Now let’s look back on the last two years.

Happy Birthday, my darling Quinn!!!

My “New” Computer

I was so upset last week when my laptop’s hard drive blew. In the past it was prohibitively expensive to replace the hard drive, so one was destined to bite the bullet and buy a new machine. Technology changed along the way, and my Computer Guru suggested an SSD replacement. For those who have never heard of this it is a Solid State Drive.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when my laptop (I feel I should name her), came home. The first thing was, I turned her on, and she turned on instantly. And although I have an I5 processor, she runs so much faster than Jack’s computer with the I7 processor.

Now here are the biggest changes. She runs quietly because an SSD has no moving parts. She also runs very cool. Jack’s laptop, and all other laptops I have had, all run very hot and the fan runs almost constantly to keep them cooled down.

It’s like having a new computer except….my Computer Guru also moved all of my programs over to the new drive! I basically sat down and started to work! So it makes things even better!

I’m very happy to have chosen to re-purpose my machine. I had not even come close to using up all my memory and I did not want to take the plunge and buy a new machine.

I’ve never thought of myself as being a super recycler, but in this day and age, I think if we can do it, and save a landfill, and our pocketbook at the same time, then it’s worth looking into.

I am lucky. I have a Computer Guru (and I say this with a lot of love and thanks for all he does for Jack and I), who truly believes in re-purposing machines when you can. His prices are really good and I think he enjoys helping people with their problems. They’re hard to find, but I know they are out there. Ask around. Anyone that lives near me, email or PM me and I will send you his number. He comes right to your house, and if he can’t fix things there, he will take your machine, fix it, and then bring it back and reinstall it for you. The day I found this young man, was a very lucky day for me!

So I am a very happy girl, with her very nice almost new computer! Thank you Brad!

Quinn’s Party

This past weekend we celebrated Quinn’s Second Birthday. This little guy works so hard to keep up with the big kids, that you forget that he is still a babe.

Quinn is one of those kids, who walked before he talked, was taking things apart and putting them back together pretty early on, and now at age two, he is talking up a blue streak. But I have to remember that he is still a baby. Two really is still very young!

So many happy, loving faces!

I was amazed watching him play with all the older kids. He would run after them, with them, and at times fall down. But this kid never cried. He just got up and kept on running.

Here’s the thing. Quinn didn’t realize that the party was for him. He just accepted that everyone was there and there was a party going on, and wasn’t that just wonderful! He played and partied and had a wonderful time. Then, as we stood and the kids sat around the table, and we sang “Happy Birthday to Quinn” he suddenly realized the party was for him and his little face brightened right up.

I want to say one other thing. All the children there were wonderful together. Not one of them wanted the birthday gifts, and they all were happy for Quinn. I think the cutest thing ever, was watching Jackson put together the Little People Animal Rescue set that I gave Quinn. This young man should be an engineer! He had that thing put together in no time.

In the background is the young man, in red, who amazingly put together Quinn’s Little People Animal Rescue Center!

My sister, Melodie and me.

So I spent the day loving and being with my grandchildren, and all those who love them. I’ve known most of these kids since they were born, and I have to say that their mothers and fathers are doing a great job. They are nice kids, and I love being around them.

Like all good things, they eventually come to an end and I had to go home. I left with a smile on my face and my heart full of love. Later this week on Quinn’s actual birthday I will post a montage I made for him.

A New Era

My computer problems appear to be nearly over. At least for now. After considering all the angles, I decided to allow my Computer Guru to replace my Hard Drive with a Solid State Drive. I did this for two reasons.

  1. Right now there is a big change going on in the computer world. With the advent of Solid State Drives, and several other computer things (which, quite honestly I do not understand), I felt it was time to wait, if I could. I spent hours yesterday going over computer specs, looking for a good fit, and just couldn’t find one. Thus, a new hard drive, and some time, will allow me to determine what will work for me.
  2. The money involved. The SSD is not all that expensive and as I stated it buys me time to learn and make a better decision. If I am spending a thousand dollars on a laptop, I want to make sure it is the exact one I want, which will last me for a while. (And I know so many of you love Apple, but for the one I would want it is close to three thousand dollars! Honestly, I am not ready to spend that!) I did see several that have 17 inch screens which would be good. My eye problems make it difficult to use small screens. So this would be great!

I am just waiting to get my laptop back now with the new hard drive. I’m actually excited about this as I am hopeful it will solve my problems for a decent price, and allow me to learn more about the new era of computers!

The Friday Five

Computer Woes

Once again I am having computer difficulties. Jack offered to let me use his laptop to hunt down a new machine. So while I figure out what I want, and where to get it, I am also using his machine to update the blog. So, gentle readers, here are the Friday Five.

  1. Many people have told me to get an Apple Laptop. When I priced out, what I want in their machines, it was well over 3 thousand dollars. Should I spend 3 thousand dollars on anything right now, it would be a good vacation! So I’m not thinking Apple.
  2. There are several HP’s that I like, and I think we will take a ride to Staples, or BJ’s. I also think I may go to their web site and “build my own”.
  3. I was looking at computers on Amazon, but a lot of people complain about the fact that they feel they are getting refurbished machines and not new ones. I would ignore it if I read just one review like this, but it seems to be happening a lot.
  4. Aside from computer woes, I decided to deep clean my kitchen from the top down. It meant climbing ladders, and standing on the counter to wash the tops of cabinets, and really work to get the greasy film off the light fixtures. Well, the next day I could hardly move. You see, I have not worked my arms above my head, and in a washing motion in well over two years, due to my neck/spine problems, so yesterday I could hardly move! I took the day off to do laundry and this morning I feel much better.
  5. Tomorrow is Quinn’s birthday party. His actual birthday is March 7th, and that is when I will post his birthday montage. I’m really looking forward to seeing all the kids!

Well that’s it for Friday. I will try to “borrow” Jack’s laptop to add an entry to Dackel Princess each day. Hopefully, I will get my very own laptop soon.

Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. Are you currently operating at 100% capacity? If not, what % are you? What’s keeping you there?

I was just saying to Jack that I am still working on regaining my strength after last years infection. I think I am probably back to 75-80%. I work and work at things, but just can seem to gain the strength I lost.

2.  Have you done your taxes? Planned/booked a summer holiday? Thought about or started your ‘spring cleaning’? Besides what’s listed here, tell us one task that needs doing before spring rolls around.

Jack does the taxes and he can’t start until we get all of our documents. I have a trip planned in April, but so far that is it. One thing that needs doing before Spring rolls around? I need to spend one hour each day working on the little things in each room in the house. Then by the time Spring arrives I will be where I want to be.

3. What’s a favorite food from your part of the country?

Probably Whole Belly Clams. I simply love them. Deep fried with a nice seasoned breading.

4. This isn’t a leap year, but let’s run with it anyway…look before you leap, a leap of faith, grow by leaps and bounds, leap to conclusions, leap at the opportunity…which phrase might best be applied to your life currently (or recently)? Explain.

I think “growing by leaps and bounds”! My two grandchildren are growing like weeds! And it is so fun to watch!

5. As the month draws to a close list five fun and/or fabulous things (large or small) you noticed or experienced in February.

  1. Amazing sunsets. And a few awesome sunrises.
  2. The Supermoon.
  3. Finishing my daughter’s Afghan.
  4. Starting my best friend’s afghan.
  5. A trip to visit my Sister!

6. Insert your own random thought here.

This weekend we will celebrate Quinn’s second birthday. His actual birthday is March 7th, but we will celebrate on Saturday. I cannot believe that time has flown by and my little grandson is two! It seems in so many ways, as if he has always been with us.

Life

It seems that life has a way of changing quite quickly. Like the John Lennon song goes, Before you cross the street, take my hand. Life is what happens to you while your busy making other plans.”

On Sunday we learned that my brother in-laws Aunt (the sister of his mother, who just passed) had gone to bed in her warm much loved pajamas and while sleeping peacefully in her own bed, had gone home to Heaven, to be with her husband of 60+ years, and the rest of her loved ones.

Sally was a sweet, warm, funny, kind woman. She was the blond sister to my brother in-laws brunette mother, The two of them looked very much alike facially and they both enjoyed the heck out of their families.

26219799_10214463160945874_8294255933757324129_n

Sally, with her husband, Gene, and Nancy, last year.

Within a two month period, they all passed. Yet now, they are together again.

In fact all of her kids and most of the grandchildren came to Nancy’s service on Saturday. At one point friends had drifted off to go home, but the cousins all stayed behind, just a little bit longer, to reminisce and share their much loved stories of Nancy. Of course this brought in the memories of Nancy’s other brothers and sisters. And at that time, we believed that Sally would be the last, but also we thought she would be around a little longer. The plan was, to have a big family gathering this summer. Something I hope they still will do.

Anyway, after everyone left, I went back to my sister’s house, and we just sort of collapsed. Thankfully, there was plenty to eat, left over from the Memorial Luncheon, so we picked at food, watched the Olympics, until the bed called my name at 10:15 and I fell instantly asleep.

The next morning, my sister got ready to go to church. She sings in their choir each week. She asked if i would go. I was in my pajamas and didn’t feel like going. I know, bad sister!

After she left I started to feel guilty, so I told Ron I was going to get dressed and go with him. I changed, brushed my teeth, and was all set, when Ron’s phone rang, with the news about his Aunt. After his call, we headed to church, and my sister was so happy to see me, as Ron took her aside to tell her the news. And then, my sister was happy to have me there, with her, as she faced another family member, leaving us.

So the weekend was a tough one, yet filled with so much love, and also full of hope. I do believe in God. I do believe in a place where our pain and suffering is gone and we are reunited with those we have loved and lost. Heaven.

I came home and I stood looking at my husband and I reminded him that life is so short. That we need to tell each other every day how much we love each other. How much we love those of us that are near and dear to our hearts. Life goes by so quickly.

Remember, gentle readers, you are loved.

Blessings!

Saying Good-Bye

‍Today we had a Memorial Service for my brother in-law’s mother, Nancy. All our family and friends gathered to say our farewell to this remarkable woman. The church was beautiful, and the service and music lovely. My sister and brother-law’s two sons, daughter and daughter in-law all spoke. They  each provided a loving tribute to this incredibly strong, resilient and loving woman.

As I said the music was lovely and I found myself listening while silent tears streamed down my face.

Nancy was fun, kind,  energetic, encouraging, and as I looked at her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren I realized what a positive legacy that she has left this world. She loved so much, and she was loved deeply!

Nancy loved to paint and had many framed scenes. Mel and Ron offered many of the paintings to family members. Her work will now be with her family to hang in their homes and remind them of this incredible woman.

The luncheon afterward gave us all time to visit, exchange stories, catch up on life and at the end, I felt such peace in my heart.

Nancy is now with God in Heaven. Her pain is over and her spirit is restored. She is with those who have passed before her, those she loved with all her heart, who welcomed her home.

God Bless you, Nan. May you rest in eternal peace.
