Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. Create an acrostic using the word LOVE. If you’re unsure what an acrostic is click here.

Love is in my heart

For all that I hold dear

All who know me will agree

Family means the world to me.

2. Does love really conquer all? Why or why not?

Now that is a slippery slope, Joyce. Normally I would say yes, but having gone through a very traumatic time, which led to my divorce I would be a hypocrite if I said yes. Still I do believe in love and it’s ability to get you through the most difficult of times. So perhaps a good answer is yes and no.

3. Tell us about a time recently, where you really put your heart into something.

I recently found some picture of Hubby and his first wife, and their farm. Also pictures of their newborn baby girl.

I wanted my (step) daughter to have these and I worked to scan the old pictures in and then send them to her. I’m still not 100%, so sitting at a desk and doing the work was not easy, but it was very important to me that she have them.

4. What’s your favorite fictional love story?

Currently they are Tim & Mary in the movie About Time. I love that movie. Their love starts out slowly, and grows into a wonderful, sweet, devoted, love-story.

Rachel McAdams plays Mary and Domhnall Gleeson plays Tim

5. Do you generally wear your heart on your sleeve, or keep your cards close to the vest?

My family will tell you I am an open book. I wish I weren’t. However, I love deeply, and care so very much, so unfortunately, most people (at least the ones who know me well) will tell you my heart is open to all.

6. What food says love to you? Why?

Champagne and  Chocolate, served on a table with flowers!!

7. When were you last ‘tickled pink’ over something? Explain.

When my daughter came into her kitchen last summer and was holding a pink+ positive pregnancy test! And now, the time is passing so fast and my little grandson will soon be here!

8. Insert your own random thought here.

I looked up at the shadows I saw on my ceiling the other day. What I saw shocked me! The dist on my curtains was rather heavy and the curtains looked rather dusty. I kicked off my shoes and climbed up on my chair and the sofa and pulled down all the curtains. Then I put them into my fabulous washing machine (an LG, now a year old) and put them through a soak and wash cycle and then into the dryer. I pulled them out and carefully put them back up. Now this washing machine did an amazing job, and now they are back up I am thrilled (and exhausted).

Now I usually wash them twice a year, but this year things got messed up due to the neck. Once I finish the office, which should be done by weeks end, I will pull down those curtains and wash them up as well!

You know, for curtains that are 16 years old, they look pretty darn good! But I will tell you, in a year or so, I will actually have to break down and get new ones.

Carrot Casserole

I’ve decided to make one of my favorite recipes today. Carrot Casserole. It’s kind of like a carrot souffle. Very light and very tasty! Here is the recipe.

Carrot Casserole

3 Eggs
1/2 cup sugar or (1/2 cup Splenda sugar blend)
1 stick butter
1 tbs. baking powder
2 tbs. flour
1 cup milk
1/4-1/2 tsp. cinnamon
2 cups hot cooked carrots

Place all ingredients into blender and puree. Pour into buttered (or Pam) casserole dish 8 X 10 and bake at 350* for  about 30 minutes or until set. This is good either warm or cold.

The Weekend Wrap

Well it’s Sunday night and frankly, I am amazed at how fast we weekend went. Perhaps it was the excitement of the Pond Hockey, maybe the meals I prepared for the Super Bowl, or maybe it was just that I am finally starting to sleep better after the surgery left me unable to sleep for long periods of time.

My new bed has helped with that, but also the healing. The one thing I cannot seem to adjust to is the fact that I can no longer sleep on my stomach. Fifty-seven years ago, mothers put their babies on their bellies to sleep. Mom always claimed that it helped rid me of colic. Quite frankly, I have always liked belly sleeping, and I really miss it.

Now I am trying to get used to sleeping on my sides. Being on my back is almost a fate worse than death. So I roll around a bit.

I’m watching the Super Bowl, but honestly I am not as excited as I would be if our team, the Patriots were playing.

I have started watching Premier League Soccer and Bundesliga Soccer. I am really amazed at how these men can run the length of the soccer field for that duration. Think about it. They have to be in peak shape! And I bet they burn a ton of calories, as there isn’t a fat soccer player on the fields!

So, after much consideration, I’ve decided to go to Europe and become a soccer player. It may be the only way to break my current weight problems!

Happy Monday, everyone!

Pond Hockey Tournament 2016

It’s been an interesting few days. Friday was our first real snow storm, and it was also the first day of the Pond Hockey Tournament. I felt bad that the guys and gals trying to compete, had to battle high winds, fierce snow and not the best of ice conditions.

Then Saturday dawned bright, with blue skies and no wind. I dressed quickly, threw breakfast Hubby’s way, and then suited up in my long johns, jeans, heavy shirt, jacket, gloves and a hat I have had for 16 years, went down through the garage, putting on my ice treads, and with my cameras in a small back pack, I headed off to the games.

My house.

I saw my neighbors who were amazed to see me out walking around so soon after spinal surgery. I laughed and smiled, but honestly, I do feel good and I had taken precautions.

It was a beautiful walk, and when I finally got out on the ice I was amazed at how many people were there. Ever the one to talk to those around me, I found I struck up conversations as I strolled along.

P2060011 (2)

People were laughing and joking around, and their was an air of a giant festival. Kids were skating around, little ones who could hardly stand up, were playing with an infant size hockey stick. I only saw one little altercation, when one man cross checked a man and gave it a little extra push to knock him down onto the ice. The man sprung up, and turned and came this close to popping the guy in the chops. But his teammates held him back.
P2060019

P2060015 (2)  I took many pictures and even one of my home from the ice. As you can see, we really do have a birds eye view of the games!   P2060035 (2)

I got back home, made myself a hot chocolate and watched from the warmth of my living room as the games continued and people came and left.

At the end of the day, with the ice empty, the lights were turned on, so the men could come in and rework the ice.

I feel so lucky to live where I do. Winter, Spring, Summer, or Fall, the Lake is always alive with activity!

Friday Five

The week has gone by pretty quickly. I’ve been trying to take things a little more slowly, as I think maybe I have been pushing myself too quickly, for a recovery. So here goes, my week in five.

  1. I had put Greta out for a little walk in the yard fairly early in the morning. We have a long driveway, but recently marked it, “No Outlet”, hoping that the average driver would read this and not think our driveway went through to the beach.
  2. I was monitoring Greta from my bedroom window, when a car came tearing down our driveway! I lifted the window and started to wave them down frantically, as I could see Greta in the drive! They never slowed down!
  3. I ran from my room, grabbed my jacket and ran out the door to save Greta!
  4. I ran down the stairs, and missed the last step, and went flying through the air. Landing on my knee and hands.
  5. The car backed up, missed Greta and the man got out and helped me to my feet. I told Greta to go up the stairs, and I followed. Where my Hubby hollered at me for doing something so stupid as to run down wet stairs made of cement. But I’m okay, so all’s well, that ends well.

TBT: Happy Birthday Grandma Honey

February 4th would have been my Grandma Honey’s 118th birthday. It’s difficult to imagine her at that age. She passed from this world into the next over 30 years ago. She was a very important woman in my life, and taught me so much. Even now, I miss her like crazy!

Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. Describe love using all five senses.

I love the softness of your touch, I love the glow I see in your eyes, I love to hear you call my name, I love to say your name again and again, as we share a glass of bubbly champagne.

2. February is Canned Food Month. What’s your favorite food that comes straight from a can?

Oh my. Not a big fan of canned foods. However, the thing I do buy in a can (that I do not make) is B&M Boston Baked Beans. Love them!

3. A principal in a UK school recently sent home a letter to parents requesting they (the parents!) dress appropriately when escorting their children to/from school (basically saying please don’t wear your pajamas) You can read the letter here. It’s gotten a lot of publicity, both positive and negative. Your thoughts? And do/did you ever make the school run (or hit Starbucks, Walmart, etc) in your pjs?

NEVER would I go out in my pj’s. I was called on for Jury Duty a few years back, and a woman showed up in her pajamas, and fuzzy slippers. Needless to say, she was not chosen to serve. I worse a suit and low heeled shoes. I felt it was an honor to serve my State.

4. Crew neck, V-neck, turtleneck, scoop neck…which is most prevalent in your wardrobe?

Oh dear, turtlenecks. And I am still having trouble wearing them since my surgery. Consequently, my neck feels cold a lot of the time.

5. I read here recently a list of four things to avoid so you wake up happier. They were late night snacks, hitting the snooze button, social media just before bed/upon waking, checking emails.

Are you guilty of any of these behaviors? Which on that list do you need to work harder at avoiding?

I gave up late night snacking. Bad habit. I do not use an alarm clock, so forget the snooze button. Social media before bed and first thing? Guilty. However, it’s interesting to note that I try very hard to limit the negativity I read on FB. Not always possible, but I try.

6. Share something you remember about a house you lived in as a child? Of all the homes you lived in as a child, which did you love best?

I loved my house on Clipper Lane, in Falmouth, Massachusetts the best. It was a short walk to the ocean, and was a great neighborhood.

August 2 023

My summers were always full of sun, sea and soft, cool, cotton sheets after a long day at the beach. I ran barefoot all summer long through the sweet grass, and the scent of lilacs and roses and the ocean were always there. (Or so it seemed) Sunshine and happiness, visiting with relatives who flocked to our house and the beach. Summers at Clipper Lane, are full of some of the best memories in my life!

7.Your favorite movie based on a true story?

The Kings Speech, The Blind Side, A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13, Zero Dark Thirty,  Argo, The Queen. These are just a few.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

The few times I have ever said anything political, on Facebook, I was flamed, called vile names, and told I was a hater. Now this is simply because I said I liked this or disliked that. In fact one person flipped out so badly, that they publicly called me out, and then also publicly humiliated me by a grand de-friending! So since then, I keep my feelings to my self. I simply do not need the grief. Locally, I am very active and being in New Hampshire, I try to see all the candidates speak.

But this also got me thinking. As I was reading Facebook the other day, I noted that many people that have claimed to be open minded, are the same ones who are cruel and say terrible, hateful things, about people who don’t agree with them. My question here is…do you allow people the right to their views? or do you attack them?

If we are to make our country great again, my belief is that we must all work together as Americans, and leave the hateful speeches behind us.

Wrap Up

I’ve been off in my own little world for the last few days for various reasons. The best reason is that I got to spend Saturday with my favorite three and a half year old little girl, Miss Savannah Rose!

As time draws near, for Savi’s baby brother to arrive, her parents decided to go out and have a real date day. I got there at lunch time, and stayed overnight.

And oh, what fun we had!

We danced, we played dress up, we read books, we played with jigsaw puzzles, and when Oma was tired, we watched Cartoon movies.

Oma

Even Oma dresses up.

I made her dinner. You know, the kind of dinner that all Oma’s are good at. I made chicken nuggets, corn and wait for it…..potato puffs!

Savi ate everything, and for dessert, I had brought a mini chocolate cake, and she got a piece of that! I mean, how good does it get?

About 8:15 I started reading books to her, and she lay in bed and listened to my words. I am not a great person to read out loud, but Savi does not seem to notice and loves it when I read to her.

By 8:30 she was nestled, all snug in her bed, and drifted off to sleep. I went down to the kitchen, popped open a beer and then sat quietly and watched the Australian Open match between Serena Williams and Angelique Kerber. All I can say it that the match was incredible, and it could have gone either way. In the end Kerber won, and I was in awe of both of these talented women.

Mandy and Matt got in about 10 PM and we talked for a bit before Mandy and I hit the hay. I love their guest room bed, and I slept pretty well.

This morning I was up and gone pretty early, stopping for gas at a local Warehouse Club ($1.65 a gallon!) before arriving home to my happy husband and four happy doggies!

The End

Yesterday I saw my Neurologist and got an A+ after he saw my xrays and examined me. Everything is healing nicely, and my titanium plate and pins are sitting perfectly!

img041 (2)

I’ve been nervous about the appointment, so I was really happy to hear that everything was fine. And he finally answered my biggest question. Is the plate in the front or the back? Well as you can see, it is in the front. I told him that since I had the surgery I haven’t been able to wear a turtleneck. He thought that was rather strange, and told me to keep him updated if that remains so. I also asked whether I would set off the alarms at the airport. He said I shouldn’t, but once again, to let him know.

So I am done with the surgical part and back on my feet. I’ll be off on Saturday to babysit for Savi. My favorite thing in the world, spending time with Savannah!
