A Gift

Some days you go out into the world and everything that you see or touch goes to holy heck! Other days, like Friday was for me, is a gentle gift from God, and leaves me smiling. So, here we go.

I left here on Friday in the morning for my appointment with my Primary Care doctor. It was my big physical since my disaster physical last year. I was dreading it really because the last time wasn’t all that good, and she warned me that I was cutting short my life. The point was well taken by me and on January 1st I started the total reform package!

57 pounds later…

My Cholesterol levels are good. Certainly within normal limits. I do not need any medications!

My liver function, which was showing signs of stress and disease had completely turned itself around. In fact, my Liver Function test was perfectly normal!

And my thyroid levels were right where they are supposed to be. So my medication level does not need to be adjusted.

My A-1C test for diabetes last time showed me as a pre-diabetic at 5.9. This time, my level was a perfectly normal 5.3!

Looking back at the last nine months, I realize that I have saved my own life!

My Loves

In the last few days, I have been driving all around New Hampshire. I got to spend time with Quinn and Savi and we played games and shared special times together.

I’ve been very careful about going out. I have kept myself very clean, worn gloves, masks, and used hand sanitizer. Likewise, the kids have been very isolated. So spending time together was a fairly safe thing to do.

The loneliness we have all shared has made us crave being together, and it was wonderful to hug them, hold them, and fall asleep with them cuddled up next to me.

Savi & OmaHappiness and smiles!

Imagine how much of a blessing our grandchildren are to us. Their love, their laughter, and their smiles are all so very real.

Quinn & Oma FunnyBeing silly is a very good thing!

Savi and I found a new word app game that gives you letters and you need to make words out of them. It’s pretty fun and we had a very good time playing it.

Quinn was fascinated with my Galaxy Tablet and the pictures above were when we were playing with the camera.

My visits are always too short with them, and then it was time to drive back home. The tricky part is that tomorrow I need to drive almost back to Mandy’s neck of the woods for a doctor’s appointment. Life is never dull.

Life Is Never Dull

Dog Days of Summer

Sometimes all one wants to do is to curl up in the corner, with their dog and scream, yell, and cry at the frustrations in life!

It all started on Monday morning. I got my Informed Delivery Mail email, and saw that the check from the Pharmaceutical Company was in my mailbox! Hooray!

I grabbed a deposit slip and off I went to get the check and deposit it in our account. Easy peasy!

I got to the Post Office and went to my mailbox and there was no check! So, I went to the Customer Center and asked if they were done sorting the mail. Yes, yes they were. I showed the Clerk the picture of the envelope and he went back and did not see it. I was so upset, but there was nothing I could do but wait until Tuesday to check my mailbox!

Tuesday found me happily going to town to get my mail, and the check, that most certainly had to be in my box. I nearly skipped to the box and saw some mail in it! But, no check!

I went home feeling pretty ticked off about it, but I would need to wait until Wednesday to see if it magically appears!

I made a nice meal for our dinner. Scallops, baked potatoes, and corn on the cob. The dinner was terrific and I enjoyed every bite. However, some of the corn was stuck in my teeth so I went to floss and suddenly…out popped my crown! I mean, it was just not the kindest way to end my day.

I woke on Wednesday and quickly showered and dressed and called my Dentist to get in to get my perfect crown glued back into place! My appointment was scheduled for 5:20 PM. Ugh!

So, I went to get the mail and hopefully the check, which I would deposit into the bank. I got there, and there was mail in the box, but once again…no check!

This time when I went to the Customer Center the Post Master was in and I was able to show him the piece of mail displayed on Informed Delivery, and he took down all the information. We chatted about the problem. He was going to make some calls, and hopefully, we will get our check by the end of the week, if not then we will need to contact the Pharmaceutical Company and explain the situation.

Life is certainly never dull.

Now I am waiting to get the tooth glued back on so that my life will go forward and I can chew without worrying about breaking that tooth. I will keep you posted on the missing check.

original-linear-image-dachshund-hearts-freehand-drawn-black-white-cartoon-79618182Postscript: I got in and my crown and the tooth were both unscathed. Both were cleaned up and the crown was cemented in. A perfect way to end my day!

A Laid Back Weekend

When I woke on Saturday morning, I made the coffee, fed and walked the dogs and then grabbed my cup of the warm brew and sat down.

Friday night Jack had mentioned that Firefox was getting to be unusable for him. It seemed every update changed the program enough so that he was having trouble adapting.

I have disliked Firefox for a few years now and had previously switched to Chrome, which I really like and find easy to use. I offered to install it on his machine and set it up for him.

So while Jack slept I spent about 45 minutes installing it for him and setting it all up. By the time he woke, it was all done. We have now gotten through one complete day without a complaint. Alleluia!

After making my breakfast, I stood in the kitchen and chopped and planned for the dinner meal tonight. We’re having a vegetable and shrimp stir-fry. Yum!

I also did all the prep work for my lunch of salad and a tuna-fish wrap. While everything chilled, I checked my own email and did some computer housework to keep everything in order.

Then it was movie time. As the rain came upon us, we watched a Bruce Willis movie called Striking Distance.

It was from 1993 and it was okay, but would never be up for any awards.

But the next movie, “RED” came on (another Bruce Willis movie) and this one I like a lot.

red

I have seen it a bunch of times but always enjoy it. I guess I am a Bruce Willis fan.

Motorcycle Week has started. I can tell by the constant hum of bikes going by on the main road, and from the numerous accident reports coming across Granite State Alerts.

I hope you are all having a good weekend!

Wow! Busy!

Tuesday was my big day to grocery shop. I got up early, made coffee and breakfast, and was out the door by 7:45.

It was a lovely day, so I drove the back roads to Plymouth, New Hampshire to go to Market Basket. Which, in my opinion, is the best grocery store in our area.

I arrived just after 8:00 and started my shopping. The shelves were fully stocked, and there were nearly no other shoppers in there with me! How wonderful!

I got to the Deli and got the deli-meats that Jack wanted, did all the isles, and then hit the frozen food and produce sections. I was in line to check out at 9:20 and back in Meredith by 10 AM!

I picked up the mail and then drove home. The next part of my day was just starting as I sorted through all the groceries placing some in the deep freeze, some cans on the shelves, and the rest up the cellar stairs and into the kitchen. I was done with that part by 11:15, and then I was onto making a salad for lunch.

Just as I was set to sit down and eat, Jack announced his hunger so I quickly fixed his lunch before sitting down to enjoy my own. And enjoy I did!

The rest of my day was spent doing laundry and cooking dinner before finally being done at 7:45 PM. What a long day. But, all in all, a good day too!

Monday, Monday

Monday started quite early. Not in a bad way. I heard Lili at the bedroom door and once she woke me up, other parts of me also woke and I knew it was time to get up!

I jumped into the shower and that just felt so good, my recommended way to start a Monday morning, and then I was off to the kitchen to turn on the coffee and then walk the dogs.

I fed the hounds and then did my least favorite job. I went down to the basement to check the Mouse-Taps. Of the four I lay down, one was sprung. To date, I have gotten 5 mice! Yay!

ratdiningexp

I am doing this in an environmentally way. I bait the trap with peanut butter and the bodies are returned to the field where our Eagles, Hawks, and other predators come for a snack.

last_great_act_of_defiance_square_sticker-r62381a203ae2456b8c25a2a1dc5a8f94_0ugmc_8byvr_704

And since the only thing these little “meeces” have eaten is peanut butter, they are safe for all wildlife.

I am happy!

It is terribly hot here today, and from what they say, it will be like this all week. My plan is to have a low key this week and enjoy the air conditioning!

I did venture out to the Post Office to get our mail, as I had an Amazon delivery which included a new dish rack to dry my hand-washed dishes in the sink. My old one (over 35 years old!) finally disintegrated and I was in need. It was not easy to find one that fit inside my twin sinks, but eventually, I did, and it is now installed.

Ah yes. It’s the little things in life that make us happy, isn’t it?

Another Busy Day

My Tuesday was rather incredible. Jack had an appointment to be fitted for shoes (After the amputation he needs special shoes) and he asked for me to go with him. After he wanted to see the new Grocery Store.

We were due to get the remains of Tropical Storm Isaias. It was cloudy and humid on our drive over, with a few spits of rain. But nothing heavy.

I sat in the car reading while Jack went in for his exam. As I sat, all of a sudden, the skies opened, and the wind blew, and it was like being caught in the middle of a terrible storm!

45a429e462fcffad35fec08dae5b04af

I watched people come out of the building, run for their cars, and get soaked to the skin. It made me happy to be sitting in the car reading my book.

Finally, Jack was done, and he came out. Lucky for him the rain had lightened and he did not get drenched!

I think the new super grocery store overwhelmed Jack. He began to seem tired and so I skipped many isles, and just got to a register and checked out. I did not finish my shopping, I just wanted to get him home.

But he had two more stops to make and by the time we got home and put things away and sat down for lunch, it was after 3 PM, and I was deliriously hungry and not able to think clearly.

After eating a small lunch I tried to rest a little, but the house and husband and dogs kept me on my toes. As did the Tropical Storm.

The Storm has been with us now for a bit. Not as bad as some places, but with high winds and rain we have had flickering lights, and outages with our satellite.

I managed to prepare a quick and easy dinner and get it all cleaned up. So, if the lights go out now, I could care less.

As I work hard to lose weight, Jack is having trouble keeping weight on. (If only that were my problem!) So, I bought him a pie at the store and although he insisted he wasn’t hungry at dinner I forced him to eat.

Meanwhile, I hold fast to my goals. This week was a very good week! I lost 2.2 pounds bringing my grand total to 49.8 pounds lost!!! I am a very happy girl!

Things I have Learned

I think the biggest thing I have been doing the last seven months that I have been following The WW Green Plan, is to write down each meal (using their online App) and plan out what I am going to eat.

weighing-right

Here I am at 10:15 on Saturday morning and I know what I will be eating the rest of the day.

A friend told me she couldn’t be so rigid with her eating. Her life would stop if she had to give up the things she loves.

I told her I don’t “Have” to, I “Want” to.

I’m sixty-one years old. I’ve been waiting for the “Skinny Fairy” to arrive. I’m guessing it isn’t going to happen in this lifetime.

What this means to me now, in order to avoid becoming a Type 2 Diabetic, or developing a heart problem, changing the way I eat, the very way I look at food needed to change!

And it has. Big time.

I’m a Carb-a-holic. This means there isn’t a loaf of bread, donut, cake, cookie, or breading that I do not crave and love. In fact, it’s funny, even when I am not eating bread, if I am making Jack a sandwich, I will hold the bread close and “inhale the scent” of it. Ahhhhhh!

a_Kopie_von_Titel

There are certain foods I know I cannot eat because they trigger me to start down that bumpy road.

Sugar is also one of those things on my addiction list. I have ended my love affair with the white stuff. It took about two weeks of going cold turkey before I got the need for sugar out of my system.

I’m learning to fully enjoy new things. Melon, berries, apples, garden salads, and this is a big surprise, Carrots. I’ve always liked carrots, but now I cut them up and add them to my salad. I love them!

I have given up pork and salty ham. Never a favorite, so it wasn’t hard to eliminate it from my eating plan. I love to eat fish (any kind) and I love poultry. And very occasionally I will enjoy some beef.

I know I need to use portion control, but I also need to use my head to pick and choose foods sensibly.

I’ve written a lot about my journey on WW because it helps to keep me honest with myself. I also hope that if anyone else is struggling with their weight, maybe they will see that there is a way to lose weight and still eat!

I admit that after the age of 60 it’s a little tougher to do, but not impossible.
