Sauer Braten

Ingredients:
5 lbs pot roast
4 large onions sliced
3 heaping tsp. pickling spices
4 bay leaves
1 tbs. Juniper Berries
1 pint vinegar
hot water
To Marinate:
Put all ingredients in a large covered pot. Add enough hot water to cover meat. Let stand in refrigerator 4-5 days. Each day, spoon spices over meat.
To Prepare:
In a large kettle add a small amount of shortening and brown meat on all sides. Strain liquid and add to meat. Cover and simmer slowly 3-4 hours until tender.
Take some of the juice, add a little salt, pepper, (sometimes I add some beef bullion crystals) to taste and thicken for gravy.
Serve with red cabbage, mashed potatoes and peas.

(Note: You can adjust this recipe to make larger or smaller amounts.)

It’s Almost Time

Sept 27 005

This is it, folks. On Saturday, Bernie is coming over to get together with Greta. Hopefully they will find themselves in a passionate embrace. Should I get out some scented candles and play some Sinatra for them?

I’m so nervous about it all. I know that must sound really strange, but from the time I brought Shubi home over 10 years ago, I have wanted to breed wire-haired dachshunds. Due to some technical difficulties I didn’t breed Shubi, but when I got Greta, I got her with the understanding that if she grew into a lovely lady, I would find her a husband and have beautiful babies.

Now here we are, and I’m as nervous as a 15 year old girl out on her first car date!

I’m planning a typical German meal for the people, while the pups get acquainted. I’m making Sauer Braten, red cabbage, and potato dumplings. Then a very typical American apple pie.

Keep your fingers crossed that it all goes well.

Why I Love My House

1. I love my big kitchen. I love to cook and the big family style kitchen is a real dream come true.
2. The views. We are so lucky to have the most wonderful views from our front windows. Sunsets are particularly beautiful, as you can see.
3. My fireplace. I have always loved the warmth a fireplace emits in the winter when you have a nice fire going.
4. My bathroom. We have a big shower in it and also a jacuzzi tub. Put a fridge and TV in there and I could live in it.
5. My greenhouse. What a great place to start seedlings in the spring, and store wood in the winter!
6. The patio. I love my patio. Hubby and I laid all the stones on it, and we really enjoy sitting out there having a picnic, cookout or whatever.
7. The screened in porch. It’s a good old New England screened porch and I love it. Why, you might ask? Well, because there is that 3 hour time frame in the early summer evenings when the mosquitoes will just carry you away! the porch gives us a chance to sit out in peace.
8. My laundry room. It is set up with an ironing board, shelves and everything once could want.
9. A heated garage. I know this sounds terribly frivolous, but it isn’t. We had to do this because the garage is under our bedroom and if we hadn’t heated it, we would have had trouble keeping our bedroom warm. So having the garage heated is a good thing because we never get into a cold car.
10. Our family room. This is the room right next to the kitchen. It’s large, open and bright. This is the room we live in.
11. My bedroom. I love it because it’s where I get the most rest and sleep. It’s a quiet dreamy place for me.
12. The attic. It is wonderful and unfortunately too large. I say unfortunately because we are both pack rats and save stuff we should probably throw out. The attic is full. I keep promising to get up there and throw stuff out. Maybe next year!
13. The cathedral ceilings in the family room. It makes everything seem bigger, brighter and brings the kitchen and family room together in a nice way.

Fly In

I’ve written before that Hubby was an airline pilot. He’s been retired now for several years, as there is mandatory retirement for commercial pilots at the age of 60.

Yesterday we went to a “Fly In”. It’s a barbecue at a small airport nearby, where old “fly boys” meet to talk about the old days. Some flew in, in their small private planes,

others, like us, drove in.

There was a good group this year, as the day was bright, sunny and warm. Many people brought their grandchildren and stood next to the runway watching the planes land or take off.

Our friend, George, flew up from southern New Hampshire in his 1950 Cessna 170.

There were also two Piper cubs.

And several RV’s. These small planes are built from kits and fly like the wind!

We had a great time, talking about the old days, and really enjoyed the sunshine.

Fall
(By John Denver)

“Reflections on the water like shadows in my mind
Speak to me of passing days and nights and passing time
The falling leaves are whispering winter’s on it’s way
I close my eyes remembering the warmth of yesterday

It seems a shame to see September swallowed by the winter
And more than that it’s oh so sad to see the summer end
And though the changing colors are a lovely thing to see
If it were mine to make the change i’d let it be

But I don’t remember hearing anybody asking me”

Oct 2 005

I’ve always loved the group of songs by John Denver called “Season Suite”. These are the lyrics for the “Fall” section of it. They kept going through my mind today as I pulled up the plants, weeds and debris in the garden, getting it ready for the winter.

I stopped to toss the ball for Fritz and to admire the changing leaves around me. What a pretty time of year it is. One of my favorites. The cooler temperatures, the bright colors of leaves on the trees and the start of yet another part of life. Many people believe that spring and summer are the only beginnings. I think that this is not actually true. Although many things go to sleep in the winter, there is also a rebirth that occurs during this time as well.

I live across the street from a lake. In the summer it is so alive. I can hear the children laughing and playing and splashing in the water below. The fishermen in their dingies, the water skiers being pulled along at great speeds by fast paced motorboats, trees in full bloom, flowers and birds, all crowding the scene.

In the fall, the fishermen are out in the morning, skimming the lake in their small boats, silently trying for that last elusive fish before the cold winds blow. The leaves twinkle, red, gold, orange and brown, reflected in the still morning waters of the lake. Birds flying overhead, on their journey south, squawk their good byes! A slower paced life, but still alive, for sure.

Winter comes, freezing the lake solid. In what seems like moments, the lake becomes a part of the earth. Snowmobiles arrive zipping across the landscape, and then the “Bob Houses” arrive. For those of you who do not know what a “Bob House” is, it is a small wooden shack where the hearty winter fishermen can sit while waiting for that one big fish that escaped the summer fishing lines, bites at their winter snares. Some of the houses are very simple, others are wild with bars, beds or even a fireplace. Life on the lake in the winter. It is cold, but alive, nonetheless.

Eventually spring comes to the lake and each year we wait and watch for ice out. That magical day when the ice breaks up and once again the flow of water returns. It’s still too cold for fishing, for swimming or even for the birds, but once again I am struck by how alive the lake is, as the water rocks back and forth to shore.

In fact, the lake is always alive, winter, spring, summer or fall. In the warmth of the summer or the coldest part of the winter.

What a wonder to behold!

We Interrupt This Blog For A Commercial

I’ve been watching TV today, one of those things that you do on a rainy Sunday in October…well that, and cook. So while cooking and watching TV, I found myself not really involved with the football games on the tube, but rather the commercials.

There are two ads that seem to be repeated over and over. The first is a Tiger Woods commercial. It shows Tiger on the golf course. At first he is hitting the ball brilliantly and then he is hitting the ball out of sand traps, water holes, and off of palm tree stumps. You’ve all seen the commercial, haven’t you? He does this with a smile on his face and with a great deal of self deprecating humor. Very cute.

The next one is Peyton Manning going around to local businesses, applauding the workers, cheering them on, asking the grocery store guy for his autograph. Peyton is so cute, just making fun of himself.

I mentioned this to Hubby, who remarked that each time those commercials are shown those two men just rake in the big bucks. Kaching, kaching! (Sound of a cash register ringing up the dollars!)

It was then that I had this idea.

Dear Mr. Ad Man,
I want you to know that I would not be averse to making a commercial for your company. I will allow you to film me while I golf (which is truly splendid because I have no talent at all and this would be quite humorous to your viewers). I would also allow you to come with me to the grocery store, McDonald’s, Wendy’s or Burger King, and film me asking for autographs and cheering the cooks as they make my burgers. I will even do a series of cheers in an outfit of your choice (which, if you could see my figure would be “fun” for sure).
For this privilege, I will charge you 1/10th of what Peyton Manning and Tiger Woods charge you for their services.
You see, instead of these superstars trying to look like an average person, you would actually have an average person, in “real life”! This could be a first!
Yours very truly,
The Dackel Princess

Well, do you think I have a chance?

Patience

The elation of getting my vision back hit a brick wall today. I got my temporary prescription filled, put my glasses on for the first time and I felt like I was going to fall over. I couldn’t see much at all. I panicked! I had the technician check the lenses. Surely someone had made a mistake!

Hubby arrived in the shop at this point and gently reminded me that Dr. W. had warned me that until my stitches come out my vision will not be perfect. The right eye is fine, but the left eye has double vision due to the stitches. With this prescription I see better, but not perfectly. He finally convinced me to leave the shop with the glasses on and to give it a try.

We drove down to Concord and went to a Greek festival for lunch. I was still having trouble with my vision, but I must add here that the quality, the clearness is perfect, so I just have to be patient until the stitches come out.

However, patient, I am not.

I had a wonderful Moussaka for lunch and Hubby had Souvlaki. It was fantastic! Our friends belong to this church and we go every year to enjoy the good food, the friendly people and support their church.

Then we went shopping. Both at LL Bean and then for food. I found a great fleece jacket at LL Bean, and well, lots of food at the grocery store.

I finally had to do a little driving on our way home when we picked up the other car. I was okay as long as I did not turn my head.

Okay, I admit it. I’m feeling a little frustrated and a little depressed tonight. I guess in this fast paced world of ours we all expect instant perfection, and that isn’t going to be the case with my eye.

Patience…patience…patience.
