It’s Official, I’m The Dackel Princess

I have great news to share regarding my being registered with the Deutscher Teckel Klub (German Dachshund Club) as a Kennel. First I applied for membership and once I was accepted I applied to become a Kennel. I needed to do this in order to register Greta’s puppies in Germany.

Today I received the completed documentation that shows my name has been entered into their books as a member and as a Kennel. Dackel Princess is my Kennel name.

There are a few reasons this makes me very happy. First, I wanted to be able to register Greta’s puppies in both Germany and America. Since I believe in and have followed the German standards for breeding her, I really wanted to be able to register the litter in the land of their mother’s birth.

Someday, who knows, perhaps I will bring a pup over to Germany for the summer and actually show it. Greta’s puppies would be eligible to do this.

There are also many Germans living here in the States who would appreciate a dog who was bred to the German standard. Since we belong to the American branch of the DTK it is my hope that perhaps some of the members might be interested in a pup.

Another reason is my Grandfather. I think how proud he would be that I have registered my Dackel in Germany. Papa came to this country when he was 9 years old. Somehow I think it would please him that I have truly fallen in love with the land of his birth and that for all of time my name will appear in the DTK membership book there.

Here’s to you Papa, dear!

The New TV Season”

1. I’ve been mostly disappointed with the new TV season.
2. Of the new shows I’ve seen I like “Ugly Betty” and “The Class” the best.
3. I wonder what’s happening on CSI. The story-lines have been really weird this year.
4. I used to like the Law & Order’s, but I’m sort of tired of them.
5. Still loving “House” best of all!!!!! (Smoochies to Hugh Laurie!)
6. I think the funniest show in TV is “Two & A Half Men”. The kid is the best!
7. NCIS shifted gears this season which helps to keep things fresh!
8. “How I Met Your Mother” just keeps getting better and better.
9. I’m watching CSI Miami on A&E in reruns. Mostly because I don’t stay up after 10.
10. There is nothing on Wednesday that I watch. Sad, but true!
11. Desperate Housewives has had a few funny moments, but come on, some of these situations are just too far out and too wild that even I (a veteran Soap Opera Watcher), am getting a little tired of it.
12. I wonder if any good mid season shows will come on?
13. I’m watching more and more cable TV shows and spending more time on the computer.

The Best Laid Plans

It was flu shot day today for Hubby and me. Each year we get down to a flu shot clinic early and get “stuck” to avoid the aches and pains and general awful feeling you get from the flu. I went early (my number was #1, so this gives you a hint how early I was) and while I waited for the clinic to begin at the local Pharmacy, I walked around the store shopping.

Okay, I know, anyone who buys anything in a Pharmacy besides drugs obviously doesn’t get out much, right? Well, they had these great doggy steps that I had seen on TV. They were not expensive, and best of all, had no shipping and handling charge, so I tossed those in the cart. I also found a few Christmas presents and a couple of cards. Yes, I’m afraid I am a a Pharmacy Shopping Geek!

The Nurses showed up and I was injected and the nurse stuck a Band-Aid on me, to keep my “pretty pink shirt” free from blood. Well, guess what? She totally missed the place on my arm where she stuck me and I bled all over my “pretty pink shirt”! Grrrrrr!

As I drove home I was in total awe of the beauty around me. The leaves are so beautiful this year and I just soaked in their radiance. I’ve decided that I like Autumn the very best!

When I got home, I quickly got out the doggy steps and followed the directions and put them together. I just knew Greta would love them and that she would instantly use them, thus not stressing her back in any way, and of course giving her soon to be expanding belly plenty of room when she got up on a chair or the bed.

Greta sniffed the steps. She looked at them, then at me, like I had totally lost my mind. I got treats and tried to bribe her to climb up the pretty little steps. She hates them. I’m not giving up though, I will work with her each day until she comes over to me and using the stairs, climbs up in my lap and says, “Thank you for buying me steps, Mommy!”.

Until then I am stuck with the old saying, “The best laid plans…”.

A Perfect Indian Summer Day

Oh what a beautiful Monday we had. In the upper 70’s and just delightful. Our day was spent waiting for Bernie to arrive for his last visit, and working on a puzzle of Neuschwanstein castle in Bavaria.

Emily arrive at 9 AM and she spent the day. It was a lot of fun doing the puzzle, playing with the dogs and putting on press on nails. We also made cream of broccoli soup for our lunch!

Em was busy taking pictures too. She is getting to be very good at this.

Here is one of Fritz.

And Bernie and Greta.

Everything went spectacularly with Greta and Bernie and now we must wait about three weeks to learn if she is pregnant! I sure hope she is. I’ve got my fingers crossed.

Bright, Beautiful, Sunday

Ah yes, Sunday was such a beautiful day. The sun was shining, the leaves were turning bright colors, the air was pleasantly warm and Greta became a “woman”!

I feel sort of silly being so pleased that my dog finally acted the part and let her boyfriend of a few months have his way with her. However, I am tickled pink, and smiling like some totally insane woman.

Oct 5 002

Last night I was convinced that Greta was the last of a small sect of “Doggie Nuns”. That I would go to my grave never knowing the joys of breeding a beautiful litter of perfect little wire-haired dachshunds. When I took her to bed last night I lay down beside her and told her all about the joys of sex and being a mother. I begged, I pleaded and then as I listened to her soft and steady breaths, I prayed.

When Bernie arrived on Sunday morning I figured that they would do the “dance of love” for a while before getting down to business. That just didn’t happen. Bernie came in to the house, did a quick Tango with Greta and Wham, Bam, Thank-Ya Ma’am! And it was done.

I have to admit that I cried. It’s the romantic in me, you see, I simply couldn’t help it. My baby girl became a woman.

Sex And The Single Dachshund Part Two

Well, it is now official. Greta and Bernie did it! I was there. I am a witness. So my little girl is no longer an innocent!

If all goes well, come December 10th or 12th the puppies will arrive. That is, if it takes. We will know in about three weeks or so when I bring Greta in for a check up. Meanwhile, we are getting these two, love struck kids, together again tomorrow afternoon, for one more time of passion, just to be sure.

(Must have been the Marvin Gaye music I was playing!)

It Was A No Go

I’m thinking that tomorrow we should get out the Marvin Gaye music:

I’ve been really tryin’, baby
Tryin’ to hold back this feelin’ for so long
And if you feel like I feel, baby
Then come on, oh, come on
Whoo, let’s get it on
Ah, babe, let’s get it on
Let’s love, baby
Let’s get it on, sugar
Let’s get it on
Whoo-ooh-ooh

And maybe some aroma therapy candles. Get Greta and Bernie in the mood. Today it was two teenagers trying to “do it” and just being way to excited about it. So, needless to say, nothing got done.
Bernie comes back tomorrow and we are hoping for better things.

Tonight’s The Night

Life is full of those special moments with your furry friends.

The first day your bring them home,

(no subject)

all fluff and sweetness. The first time they wee-wee on your carpet, or chew on your shoe. The first time they curl up in your lap and fall asleep, with their sweet puppy breath mixing with your own. The first time they run to you because you call their name and they recognize it, and the first time they run away from you when you call them, just so they can see you run!

Yes, our furry friends give us something that no one else is able to, continuous entertainment, laughter, joy and unconditional love.

The day we picked Greta up from her breeder, I remember the wonder I felt at this very small puppy (4 lbs), who was so in control of herself, and the situation she found herself in. She was a brave lass, never crying for her litter mates or mother, it was as if she had bid them all adieu at the gate of the house and then her life as Greta began.

I feared a little for her when we brought her into our home. Would Fritz be too rough with her, would this poor little thing be bullied by him? Ha! I look back now and laugh. Greta came in, took one look at Fritz and Shubi and took over the house. I need not have worried.

The last 2 1/2 years have flown by and here we are. The day I have looked forward to for many, many years. It’s the day Greta will mate with Bernie, and the Dackel Princess Dynasty will begin.

Ever since I first saw Shubi #1

shubi1

(the wire-haired dachshund owned by our friends), way back in 1989, I have dreamed of having a beautiful, well tempered female like Greta. I wanted to breed this wonderful type of dog. I told Hubby that I would never breed an animal unless I could be assured of two things.

First that the pups would add something wonderful to the American gene pool, and two that they could be registered.

I really had wanted to breed my Shubi

June 29 008

(who was Shubi #2), but her paperwork was not transferable to the AKC and her pups could never have been registered. She would have made a wonderful mother, but I stuck by my promises to myself, and I had her spayed. Then I loved her beyond measure, all the days of her life.

Years later, when we looked for another wire-haired dachshund, we looked for one who could be registered and was all that you hope the breed to become here in the States. And we found our Greta.

As I sit here writing I am nearly overcome with the emotion of love, happiness and eager anticipation.

Sleeping

Shubi was the funniest dog I ever had. From day one she wanted to sleep. While other puppies were running around, chewing and getting into trouble, there was Shubi, always ready for a nap. We all still miss our little sleeper. Here are some of our favorite pictures of her.

Me with baby Shubi. She was my little snuggle bunny, and the best nap taker a girl could have.
