Puppies and People I Love

Sunday was a weird day. Some rain, some sun, but lots of play times. We took the pups into the back yard as often as possible and allowed them to run us ragged! While they did that Anneliese, Arnie and Greta all worked at teaching them all the things that proper doggies know.

If you would like to see the pictures to identify which pups are which, you can go over to my flickr account and see them here.

I also used the day to catch up on some laundry, some puppy room cleaning, including washing more of their soft toys, and cooking my sweet Hubby special meals to celebrate Father’s Day. I also gave him a book I knew he would love. It’s  “The Berlin Candy Bomber” by Gail Halvorsen . He is the World War II pilot who dropped chocolate down to the children of Berlin during his flights into the city during the Berlin Airlift. Hubby actually knew Gail when he was based in Berlin, and played racket ball with him. He loved the book! And I am guessing the cooking too!

Also a big Happy Birthday to my favorite cousin, Janet! You are  more like a sister to me than a cousin. How lucky I am to have you in my life! Go on over and wish her a Happy Birthday!!!

Some Days…

Some days I find it difficult to just write upbeat things. And so it goes today. Last night Hubby and I attended a grand party to commemorate the life of a dear friend of ours. So many people we know turned out, and we shared stories and jokes about this beloved woman, who lost her battle with cancer just before the puppies were born. I’d seen her a few days before she passed and I am so glad that I did.

I spoke to her step children and they said how many people had stopped going up to see her and how much she missed all of that.

I spoke to her sister and told her what a wonderful woman her sister was and how lucky I was to know her. I thought of my own sister then and how much she would be hurting if this was me she was trying to say good-bye to.

I spoke to her husband, who is destroyed at losing her. I thought of my own Hubby, who would be lost without me.

So hold your family and your friends closely and remember how dear they are to you. Life is short and we must appreciate everyone we have, and everything we share each day.

I promise tomorrow to have more happy puppy news and pictures.

A “Fabulous” Visit!!!

On Saturday the Dackel Babies were visited by their Auntie Fabulous from Massachusetts. She brought with her another Auntie, Auntie Anna Lena and we all were in Dackel Puppy Heaven!

Auntie Fabulous brought with her, her two dogs Fabulous Dog, and Lani.

May 23 003

I have long been a fan of Fabulous Dog, as he is truly a handsome guy!

May 23 004

And when I gave him the chance, Mr. Fabulous showered me with kisses!!!

May 23 011

Hubby took the chance to spend time with the two ladies and show them all sorts of places to go and see on our states map.

May 23 001

We had lunch together. I’d made an eggplant Parmesan and salad and Fabulous brought a sugar free apple pie! That was totally delicious!

Now Anneliese wasn’t sure she was at all happy that Fabulous Dog was in our yard. She barked and barked and drove us all insane!

May 23 002

Finally we decided to allow Fabulous Dog and Lani to rest in the car and my hearing was restored.

They stayed until mid afternoon and then headed off to do some hiking. I hope we can get together again for some more visiting. I think once the puppies are gone all the dogs could probably get alone just fine. Greta, Fritz, and Arnie were all friendly with Lani and Fabulous Dog, but Anneliese is still very protective of her babies.

It’s so great when you meet a blogging friend and find that they are even more of a pal than you thought they would be!

A Day In The Life

I climbed into the puppy box today to sit with my grand-puppies, and found there was barely room for me! They are getting so big! They also are moving around a lot now that they can see and hear. For instance, Baron loves Uncle Arnie, and when he sees him standing next to the whelping box, he works his way over to the edge of the pool and looks up lovingly at Arnie! It is the cutest thing!

Anyway, as I sat there, holding Baron I suddenly felt something warm and wet on my hands, leg and stomach. Yes, Baron pee-ed on me!

May 19 064

Oh boy! Well, it’s a good thing I love them so much.

I just laughed and once I got done cuddling, I got up and went in to change my clothes and wash up!

***************

I’d arranged for my sister to meet my Magical Margarita! She is the woman who dips my hair in the fountain of youth and fills me with youth and vitality!!

May 19 033

Margarita took Melodie and laid her hands on her head and voila!

I love it so much that I stood there and cried with happiness!

May 19 022

Mom then took us girls out for a lovely lunch at my favorite restaurant, Canoe. We had such a nice meal, enjoyed every moment, and then after went to The Old General Store for a little shopping!

Melodie and my Mom leave tomorrow for their home 4 hours south of here. I will really miss having them around!

My Dad

I raced down to Connecticut today as my Dad is now in Hospice and not doing very well. I wanted to see him. I wanted to say good-bye.

I dreaded it, but found the scene quite comforting. Dad is in a wonderful Hospice, being taken care of by fabulous nurses and finally, he is in no pain.

His room looks out at the ocean and when he wants to he can see sailboats and seagulls.

But mostly now he sleeps or drifts. But for him the pain is over.

We talked some, and I cracked a few jokes and I even sang to him two songs. He was happy to have me there, with my sister and mother. He smiled.

I don’t think it will be much longer.

Weight Watchers In Germany

As you all know, I have been following the Weight Watcher Plan for over a year. I have lost 54 pounds, and became a Lifetime Member in early January! Part of the benefits of this is that I can go to a meeting free of charge anywhere in the world. Last night I decided to take advantage of this and go to a meeting here in Berlin.

As I have mentioned before, Germany has many more Weight Watcher products in the stores. Every time we have grocery shopped I look to see what items they have. I wish we had the number of soup mixes, fresh meals and deli cold cuts that are available here.

Okay, back to my story about last night. We drove a short distance to a local community center where the meeting was being held. Uschi served as my translator because my German is very poor, and I have found that many people under the age of, say 35 do not speak English too well. I think also, people who do not use their English here forget it or perhaps lose their confidence. In any case, my Uschi was there and translated it all for me.

We walked in and the leader greeted us and it turned out that she and Uschi are well acquainted! Uschi explained that I was a Life Member and that I wanted to come and share a meeting with them. I was warmly greeted and I went through their products (available only at meetings) and bought a few things, including a cook book with many German recipes and their point values.

Then women began filing in and all were seated as the meeting began. Our leader was a kind and gracious woman. She smiled a lot and she answered the questions that the women had. She introduced me as a Life Member from the “Fatherland of Weight Watchers, America”!

I smiled and told them I had lost 54 pounds, and then I passed around my before and after picture, which I had brought with me from home. The meeting lasted for 45 minutes and at the end I asked if it was okay to take a few pictures of their set-up.

I cannot tell you how wonderful it was to go to this meeting and to share the struggle of weight loss with women from another country. You see, it doesn’t matter where you are from in this big world of ours, most women want to be fit and trim and to feel good about themselves.

Today I will be packing up and getting ready to fly home first thing tomorrow. I cannot believe how the time has flown by. It seems as though I have just gotten here. I am also sad because I do not know when I will be back to see Uschi and her family or when she will be able to come to me.

I think I will not wear too much make-up tomorrow, for I know that the tears will fall when we hug for the last time and say good-bye.

Busy Day

Today was spent walking dogs, shopping for a few last minute items (never did find a stuffed dackel toy!) and going over to Sigge and Sybille’s for coffee. It was interesting on all accounts.

First I loved meeting Sigge and Sybille and their daughter Elise, as well as their dog, Carlos. As you can see Carlos knew a dog person when he saw one and he spent a lot of time lying next to me and in my lap! What a sweet boy he is.

Shopping was futile as far as the ever elusive toy dackel went. We visited several shops but did not find one German Shepherd or dackel! What did we find? All things Disney! We did stop for lunch and had an ice cream and that was great!

Wednesday I will attend a local Weight Watchers meeting. I am looking forward to seeing what their meetings are like here. I will say one thing, there are many more Weight Watcher foods in the grocery stores. It is fun and sort of a game I play checking out each grocery store to see what items they carry.

I got word that my father has been admitted back into the hospital. Sadly he is in very poor health and I think perhaps he will not come home after this.

Anneliese would like nothing more than to go back and visit Isagrim! She has been so cute showing me her desire for him. It makes me laugh. I will know in a month if there are little babies in her tummy!

I can hardly wait!

A Day Of Rest

Sunday found us giving Anneliese a day to rest. I expect we will be driving back down tomorrow for part 2 of her honeymoon!

It is rainy, cold and generally yucky today here in Berlin. Uschi and I took Noah on a long walk around the lakes here, but we left Miss Anneliese at home. Sadly, she would draw too much attention from other perspective and unsuitable male dogs if we took her! We are all a little tired from yesterday’s excitement, so the rest of the day  we have been real couch potatoes, sitting around watching movies, and of course talking!

We watched a movie called “That Thing You Do” which was written and directed by Tom Hanks. I don’t remember it being released in the states? Does anyone else?

I think tonight we will all collapse in bed once again to prepare for Anneliese’s trip to see her beloved Isagrim. I cannot tell you how happy I am with this mating. Isagrim is not only beautiful to look at, but he is smart, and very good with his field events.

I hope everyone had a good weekend!

White Berlin!

I woke on Thursday to find it snowing once again here in Berlin! Oh dear, I think the Berliners will all blame me for this frosty winter! After all, I come from the land of snow back home in the USA!

We have had Anton overnight. Oh how wonderful this is. He hasn’t been taught any English yet, but like most children he is already parroting back what I say to him!

Anton loves to help and he is very good at cleaning the kitchen floor! Oh boy! I am having so much fun with him! In fact he even helped me today when I was writing Dackel Princess!

Uschi and I took turns reading to him. Now this was quite funny because my German is really poor, even at a pre-school level!

Oma Reads

Anneliese thinks the snow is wonderful and she goes out and runs around the house the a crazy dackel! Her favorite thing is to plow head first through the snow!  She is happily waiting until Saturday and I’ve kept her relatively quiet.

mb and noah

I was quiet today as well. I think the Jet Lag caught me and I have felt very tired. So with all the snow coming down, and being this tired I decided to just hang out today. Noah took advantage of this and I found him in my lap quite a few times, with tons of kisses! Tomorrow we have great plans to go out and visit a few places in the area. Shopping or at least window shopping!

Have a great day everyone!

Shopping & Eating Sensibly

Today I woke to bright sunshine and warmer temperatures. So pretty, but a little sloppy when walking. Anneliese is doing well and she is being just the sweetest doggy with me.
Yesterday Uschi and I went out to a huge shopping mall in Berlin’s, Alexander Platz. The mall was three stories high and packed with shops and people. I bought a scarf to go with my jacket, but that was all.
On our way home we stopped at a grocery store and I roamed around the store. I could not believe the wonderful Weight Watchers food items they had there, including Fleisch Salat and salami and soups. Oh I wish we had these things in America!

WW meals

We took many pictures in the market before a woman came and said we were not allowed to take pictures! Why not? The store was beautiful, clean and well displayed. You would think they would want to show off. I took pictures anyway because it was so nice.

I must tell you that when Uschi and I are together we do nothing but chatter like two teenagers! It’s wonderful! Uschi’s husband, Volker has set me up with his computer and helped me along with any and all problems I have had with it. He also gets me my fresh baked sunflower seen rolls each morning! For my German readers, you know how wonderful those are!

Here is a little montage I have made from my first two days. I promise more pictures along the way. Meanwhile, don’t forget to comment so I don’t get too homesick for you all!
