Playing!

The puppies had their first year Vet visit today. They were weighed (Arnie was 18.8 pounds and Anneliese was 16.2 pounds), examined and given all their shots. They were exceptionally good pups, until a teacup poodle and his owner entered the clinic and then they began to bark like two wild maniacs! The old man looked down his nose at them, and then glared at me and said, “I think you need the Dog Whisperer!”

The funny thing is, had he just put the dog down, my two would have played with it and all would have been fine. In any case, I felt firmly chastised for being the owner of these two little, wild, beasts! LOL!

Next week is Greta’s appointment for her shots, and then in April Fritz will go have his teeth cleaned and get all his shots done.

I stopped at the New Hampshire Crafts Shop to visit my friend, with both puppies, as well as the Post Office. The pups loved this, and everyone was pleased to see them too.

It actually became sunny and a bit warm (40 degrees F) by noon. Emily had a half day of school, so once she was here, we had lunch and after that we went out to play with the dogs.

Hubby worked on the path around the house again today, blowing the snow back down to a passable pathway. Then we came in and Emily and I did some computer work together, looked at magazines and chatted until it was time for her to go home.

All in all, a very nice day!

The Birthday

Monday was the big birthday. Birthday # 1! We got a cake and the two girls came over for the celebration. The kids came down and we got candles on the cake, and sang Happy Birthday to the little furballs!

Dec 10 006

Our singing was sweet and melodic (LOL) and the pups seemed to know it was all for them. They wanted that cake more than anything. So first we offered it to Anneliese who grabbed the entire thing in her mouth!

Dec 10 008

We managed to get it out of her mouth long enough to break it up. Then she at up the entire piece!

Next we got Arnie. He took one look at the cake and just inhaled his piece! Isn’t it amazing how dogs and children learn to eat cake like this?

It was a wonderful first birthday and everyone had a good time, and lots of cake!

Thirteen Things about Anneliese and Arnie

1. Arnie was the only boy in our litter of pups.
2. From a very early time I knew Anneliese was “my girl”, and staying with us.
3. Arnie and Anneliese were the two pups who tended to snuggle and sleep together from day one.
4. The puppies were all about the same size when they were born, but within a few weeks Anneliese was clearly going to be the smallest puppy in the litter.
5. Arnie was always Mr. Cool. While his 4 sisters fought for toys and food, Arnie would lay back and wait until he could get what he wanted without a hassle.
6. Everyone, always loved Arnie, because of his sweet and laid back personality.
7. Anneliese tends to be the watcher. She watches everything and everyone.
8. Both Arnie and Anneliese LOVE kids!!!
9. Anneliese was the first one to be house trained of the two.
10. But I never held it against Arnie because he was so cute!
11. Arnie was the first one I took to a dog show.
12. I tend not to worry about them too much when I go away, because they have each other.
13. Monday, December 10th, they will be ONE YEAR OLD!!!

The Dachshund Dating Game

Today Greta and Bernie went on a little date. You know that when Greta goes into heat again (January?), they will be “getting together” for a little dachshund loving. So today was a Dachshund Date.

Hubby drove me down to Barbie’s house and we took Bernie and Greta over to the coast to see Dr. C. for their eye examinations. Before each breeding the two need to have their eyes examined for PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) and Cataracts. Both were examined and both passed with flying colors.

The fun part of the time spent with Bernie, was just how much Arnie looks like his Daddy! It’s amazing! The only difference is that Arnie is actually just a little larger than his Daddy, but their faces are the same.

Bernie & Greta last year.

Oct 24 015

Arnie, their son.

Sept 30 009

Anneliese their daughter.

It was also easy to see where the puppies get their wonderful personalities. Bernie and Greta are both so easy going and sweet, and so are their children!

It’s easy to see that the apples didn’t fall far from the tree!!!

A Real Princess

I am watching Anneliese as she grows up. She is beautiful. Her lines are lovely. Her face is delicate and feminine. She holds her body in a perfect pose and she is learning to heel at my side.

Oct 13 060

Anneliese is also a sweetheart. Not that the other dogs aren’t, but somehow Anneliese has decided that being by my side in the chair, in the kitchen or outside is the place to be.

Can you believe that this is the little baby that came into our house almost a year ago in December?
Anneliese

Ah, they grow so fast. They are hardly babies anymore. Soon we will be breeding Greta again and her B litter will be on the way. (And NO, I am not going to keep any of these pups!)

Meanwhile, I am really enjoying the experience of having a puppy from birth onward. It really is such an adventure. There is no getting used to the house for the pup, no learning about who you are; there is just this gentle acceptance that you ARE their family.

I think it’s one of the best things that Hubby and I have ever done!

Ten Months Old

Today I’m doing “Cute Puppy Day” on Dackel Princess. It’s been a while since you have seen Arnie and Anneliese, so I thought today was a good day to share the joy. I hope you enjoy seeing their adorable faces.

Sept 30 016
First a picture of me with Arnie and Anneliese. Oh how I love my babies! They have grown so quickly in such a short period of time and I wonder all the time, where have my babies gone?

Sept 30 010
Mr. Arnie. Hard to believe he will be 10 months old next week! isn’t he a doll?

Sept 30 009
His equally lovely, yet feminine sister, Anneliese. Where Arnie is a big boy at 18 pounds, Anneliese is quite petite at 15.

Sept 30 011
And last but not least, Greta the mother of these two. Still lovely and sweet.

Have a great weekend everyone!

My Girl, Anneliese

Anneliese is growing up. For the longest time she would wander around and you had to watch her, like you would watch a 2 year old child, lest she disappear. In the last few weeks she has started to stay in the yard and seems to understand the boundaries of our property.

She has also started to listen. Now if this lasts, I will be totally thrilled. As a young puppy you would call her and she would pretend that she did not know what you were saying or whom you were calling.

Now she actually turns her little head and even (gasp) comes running to you if you instruct her to do this.

August 15 005

I wonder if all of this compliance on her part is due to the treats that I try to keep in my pocket to reward her good behavior. Whatever the reason, when I look into those beautiful eyes I melt and fall in love with her all over again.

Puppies, Puppies, So Much Fun!

Did you ever wish that you could run and jump and roll around in the grass with wild abandon and not worry that people would think you had lost your mind?

Okay, let’s face it, unless you are six years old, it’s not going to happen. However, watching the puppies gives me probably more pleasure than if I was actually doing it myself.

I love to watch them run, jump, tackle each other and roll down the hill while biting each other on the leg! You can almost see them smile while they are doing this.

August 7 028

I was watching today and I was thinking about the fact that they have been playing like this since they opened their eyes Christmas Eve! What a wonder it is to watch these two siblings grow, still best friends, still playmates.

These puppies sure are keeping me young!

Family Reunion Day 1

A Walk In The Mud

We arrived over at the family homestead just after lunchtime. The ride over was beautiful, as we drove through the little towns of Nova Scotia. The homestead is on the Bay Of Fundy in a spot where the tides are so great they literally go completely out and leave only wet mud flats in their wake.

July 26 008

The two puppies trotted out and I picked up Anneliese. I didn’t want her frightened by all the new people. This was the right thing to do, as she wasn’t at all freaked out and in the end, the two pups had a wonderful time.

The cousins all hugged and kissed and laughed and pictures were taken and beers were hoisted.

Shalena, Hubby and Barbara.

After we had all munched some goodies, Hubby’s cousin Billy decided that since the tide was out this would be a great time to go walking on the mud flats. Hubby immediately said yes, and I was horror stricken. I remembered the mud, the sticky mud from years past and I also worried about his knees. But he wouldn’t listen and off he went with a team of 11 of his cousins.

Heading toward the bay.
July 26 013
Down the ladder they go.
July 26 015
Right into all the thigh deep mud! What saved Hubby was his incredibly long legs, otherwise he would have been a complete muddy mess like the rest of them.
July 26 017
Eventually they made it out to the flats where they walked for a few miles. Never let it be said that a Canadian is not prepared. Here you will see his cousin carrying a cooler with beer for all!
July 26 020

July 26 024
Eventually they found a swimming area to play in and enjoyed that.

July 26 030

But when they returned I was ready with my camera to catch their muddiness! They all needed to shower off before we would allow them back in the house. Then I told Hubby all that I had planned to do to him had he fallen and really gotten messed up. Or worse yet, destroyed my good camera, which he insisted on taking with him!

The evening was spent eating a great dinner of Sea Bass and Deer steaks along with a salad and some fresh bread.

The two dogs continued to be sweet,

July 26 007

but around 8 o’clock we noticed them sprawled across the deck asleep. So we picked them up and headed back to the motel. I was pretty tired myself, and so I crawled into bed and fell almost instantly asleep, leaving my writing of Dackel Princess to this morning!

We head back to the homestead at noontime and will have a big party with the cousins who are already in town tonight, complete with some bluegrass music. Then Saturday night is the banquet and dance.

Off to have my coffee!

We made it!

I was at my wits end! I opened my notebook last night as soon as we got settled into our motel room. And NOTHING! I couldn’t connect. I tried everything, even invoking the powers of Harry Potter, and nothing!

I asked for help at the front desk. The lovely girl was no help at all. She uses Windows Vista and has never used an XP machine before.

Finally this morning I hard wired the machine in and voila! I got it going. So…

Here we are in Windsor, Nova Scotia, Canada. What a beautiful place this is. Nova Scotia, in general, reminds me of Cape Cod.

Our journey began at 6 AM yesterday with Arnie and Anneliese. Arnie was so easy in the car. He loves to look around and cuddle in your lap. But my poor baby Anneliese was afraid, and shook for the first half an hour. Now that we have traveled all the way here, including a three hour ferry ride, she is a seasoned traveler. In fact this morning when I went out to the car she came with me and hopped right in!

But I digress.

We drove from 6 AM until 2:30 to St John, New Brunswick where we sat waiting for the ferry. We were early and so we were first in line. The puppies moved from their crate in the back seat to the front seat and they were very busy checking everything out.

The pups in the car.

Anneliese with her Dad.

We got on the ferry and off we went. The first hour or so I sat reading Harry Potter while Hubby roamed the ship. The pups were safely in their crate below decks and so I was able to simply relax and read.

July 25 008
Our ferry.

Soon Hubby came back with a couple from Alberta Province and we all sat around talking for the rest of the trip. Another young man, who works for the government in Veteran’s Affairs joined us and it was so interesting to hear their views.

July 25 017
Coming into Digby

Once we got to Digby, Nova Scotia, then it was just a matter of time until we got to our motel. It’s a new, nice Super 8 and now that I actually have my Internet hookup I am very happy!

Today we will head over to the family homestead and catch up with the cousins who are already here.
