And Just Like That…My Hair Is Done

I’ve become a major “Germaphobe”! Just call me Howie Mandels Twin. You know he is terrified of germs (one has to wonder how/where he is surviving during the Corona Virus Pandemic.) This is how I am these days. I don’t want people near me and I am terrified of small spaces.

However, that being said, when my roots, which are a whitish/gray measured 2 inches, I knew I had to do something.

I think the drug store color is dangerous. Too many chemicals. So I’d heard from a friend that Madison Reed color company was a good one.

I spent time on their web site, consulted with a colorist, and put my order in. Trust me, it was a total leap of faith, as I had not done anything like this in many years.

The color box arrived with all sorts of goodies and I planned to perfection my date with the dye bottle.

This is when I had sectioned off my hair before I started. I was really nervous about it, but persevered!

20200529_160322
Okay, the roots were cooking and eventually I pulled the color through all of the hair. I was wondering what it was doing under that cap.

20200529_165238
And this is the after! It’s actually the same color I had when I was 22 and didn’t need to color my hair!

20200529_165435So here I am after. I feel good and as I gazed in the mirror I realized I had only one chin! Months of careful eating was paying off.

I must say that my color success and the arrival of a few of my on order items in the mail, just made my day.

The Friday Five

The Friday FiveThis week seemed to fly by as the holiday on Monday really shortened the days. In fact, I actually had things I had to do this week besides the usual grocery shopping, so it added a little something to my life. In any case, here we go. This week’s Friday Five.

  1. Those of you who are FB Friends have heard about the dogs who invaded my yard and threatened Anneliese. Lili, our family’s bodyguard came to the rescue and chased those dogs away.Lili the Protector I realized that after protecting me from the burglar and protecting the dackels from the larger dogs, Lili’s “Purpose” in life is to protect her family. It’s really kind of beautiful when you think about it.
  2. Okay, here is my big thing right now. My hair has grown incredibly long during the Pandemic. I think the fact that I eat mostly vegetables and lean proteins has given my body what it needs to grow longer hair.gray
Thus, my gray hair now measures about 2 inches! Since I don’t feel comfortable going to a salon yet, and I am really not enjoying my gray I ordered some hair color from Madison Reed. Tomorrow I will do my first ever, at home, hair color. I plan to take a lot of pictures so you can follow along. I hope that in the end, it is okay and not too terrible.
  3. A year ago, Anneliese was losing her vision and also was diagnosed with breast cancer.Anneliese May 28 2020

I figured that my girl wasn’t long for this world. But here we are, a year later. She doesn’t see much, but she is having a great life and is a very happy and loving girl!

  4. We’ve had hot summertime heat this week. Not one of my favorite times, when temperatures soar at or above 100 degrees.20200527_130144 At least by the weekend, we should have cooler, drier weather.
  5. I am closing in on the 40 lb mark at WW. I am very please and really happy with how I am looking and feeling!

How I Came to Love Dackels

I wrote this back in 1996 when I joined a group of Dachshund owners. It tells the story of a woman who falls in love with a foreign doggy boy, only to find the greatest love of her life is the breed of dog that he is.

I wanted to share my story about how I grew to love Wire-Haired Dackels and how I became owned by one!

Eight years ago in 1988, my husband brought me to Starnberg, Germany, this is just south of Munich, to meet his dear friends Lucie and Otto. I was a new bride and nervous about meeting his longtime friends. As I sat in their living room, in ran a small vivacious pup named Shubi, who was a wire-haired Dachshund. Shubi spoke no English, and I spoke no German, but it did not matter. It was love at first sight! Shubi climbed into my lap and we kissed and that was it.

The original Shubi!

For the next week where ever I went I was followed by this love-struck little man. When we parted I cried and all I would say to my husband was, “I want a little Shubi dog!” We made four more trips to Munich over the next four years and it was always the same. Shubi became my love while I was there.

Sadly, two years ago Shubi escaped his fenced-in yard and was hit by a car. I grieved for so long. And so did Lucie and Otto.

At Christmas in 1995, we learned that Otto was ill and in February 1996 we went back to Germany to see Otto and Lucie. The house was oddly still with no little man running around the house. It just was not the same cheery home. I said to Lucie at lunch that we should go and find little puppies and have them together. Otto heard us and while we out shopping he found an add for Rauhhaar Dackels, or in English, Wire Haired Dachshunds.

It was 35 kilometers east of Munich to go to the home of the puppies, but we all piled into the car and off we went to Landshut. An hour later we walked into the kitchen of the Lanzingers. There was a small basket on the floor where three baby dachshunds lay sleeping at first, and then they woke and started to squirm around. I went over and a little face looked up and tried to jump up to me.

The first moment. My Shubi and me.

I picked her up and that was it. She looked me over, decided that I would do, and after kissing my face clean, she settled into my arms and snuggled. Lucie picked up a little boy pup and we were off.

I kept trying to think up a good name for my baby when my husband, who had been oddly silent said, “All I have heard for eight years is ‘I want a Shubi dog’, the dog’s name is Shubi.” And thus our Shubi adopted us as her parents, and her responsibility in life. Lucie named Shubi’s brother, Toni.

I feared bringing a pup back to the states would be difficult, but it wasn’t. She was three months old, had her shots, and once we purchased a doggie passport and bought her a ticket we were all set. Shubi road Business Class with us from Munich to New York. She was wonderful on the plane and my husband rushed her out as soon as we cleared customs, to the parking area next to the terminal. Bravo Shubi! She did just what she was supposed to.

SHUBABY (2)

We have been owned by Shubi now for three months and I have never had a pup like her in my life. She is warm, and funny, and stubborn and sweet and good and makes me feel like I am the most important person in her life. My husband, who believed that White German Shepherds were the only dogs in the world, now cuddles with this small body of fur as we settle in for the night.

Our 5-year-old White Shepherd, Max is now ruled by this little lady. He watches out for her and plays ever so gently with her and even shares his dish with her.

shubi

And when he gets out of line by chewing on a bone that Shubi decides that she just must have, and gets right in his face and barks and barks, he gives up the bone and allows her to take it.

Shubi has learned English, is all housebroken, and now rules the whole house, and I am happier than I ever thought it was possible to be! We live in Florida and she has become a real southern belle!

And right now I know that I will never be without a “Shubi Dog” ever again!

It is now 2020, and Shubi has been gone for many years. I still think of her often and miss her sweet nature. However, she left me with a great love for all Wire-Haired Dackels. Before Shubi’s passing, we brought home from Germany, Greta in 2004. She has been a faithful and loving companion and gave us the greatest gift of Arnie and Anneliese. As I wrote back in 1996, I will never be without a Shubi dog ever again.

Being Thankful

On Tuesday I had to bring my car to the shop to get it inspected for the year. She’s fairly new and since we have hardly driven her since her last oil change and new tires, she passed the exam with flying colors.

I’d had an idea in the morning to go and surprise my friend Carol. I have now lost 39.2 pounds and she has not seen me during this time. I thought, if I go over to her house and call her to come out onto her porch, she can see me!

So I dressed in nice clothes and off I went. After the tests at the Dealership, I drove over to her house! Oh, I was so excited! And it was even better than I thought!

I got out and threw my hands in the air and danced around Carol’s driveway! We both laughed and smiled, and it’s one of the best things I have felt since this whole Corona Virus started back on March 13th for me.

Nov 17 004A picture of Carol and me a few years ago. I love this picture!

The most poignant part was at the end. I kept telling her how much I love her and she kept saying I love you more! Yes, seeing someone who is this special in my life just made my entire day!

It was hot and sticky, but I did not care. I got to see my friend for the first time in several months! And for that I am thankful!

The Weekend Wrap May 25th

weekend wrap 1

Over the weekend I did a lot of TV watching. Movies, mostly and I worked hard, planning meals and then following through with eating healthfully.

Jack likes to watch the news. When he is not watching the news, we are watching “Police-TV” type shows. I have become a music listener. I have a Bluetooth device and so when I want to shut all of that out, I listen to music.

The blossoms on the fruit trees and my wonderful birds kept me happy, that was until a hornet decided that I was to be his lunch!

Red Bellied Woodpecker LadyA new friend. A Red-bellied Woodpecker, female. She is lovely!

After stating that Bees and such didn’t bother you when they have those lovely blossoms, I had a hornet literally attack me and eventually sting me on the top of my head!

Apple Blossom and bee 3Owch! I had a lump there for the remainder of the day.

Today will be another quiet day, but tomorrow, both of our cars go to the garage to be inspected. This will be Jack’s first time out since March 13th. He can hardly wait. Me? Not so much. But I know eventually, he must get out again and learn to distance himself from others as well as wear a mask and not touch his face.

A Blessed Memorial Day Weekend to all and may the week ahead, be full of happiness and good health.

Apple Blossoms

I thought this morning I would take you for a walk around my yard. The Apple Blossoms are in full bloom and not only does it smell lovely, but it is simply beautiful!

It’s a wonderful thing, being able to go outside in your yard and walk around in all of this beauty. While I was out there, the birds began to come. They appear to know me now and do not scurry off as they once did. It was lovely and peaceful and for a time I was able to forget about the Virus, and any little problems I might have.

This & That ~ May 23

My cousins, Janet and Dave, recommended a Facebook page for Bird Watchers/Lovers. Well, I subscribed and I love it.

I have really enjoyed watching my own back yard birds and to hear about and see these other birds is a thrill.

P5070039 copy

My only fear is that I will become like the “Old Bird Woman” in Mary Poppins!

Someone, please stop me if this begins to happen. Meanwhile I will enjoy my backyard flock.

Last night I boiled up three small hard-shell Lobsters for dinner. We each had one, and I shelled the third to make Lobster Salads for our lunches today.

Here’s the thing. These hard-shells were really hard. One claw was like cement and I ended up getting out a hammer to crack the shell!

The Lobster was great and we enjoyed it a great deal, but this morning my right thumb is very sore. Score: Lobster 1, Maribeth 0!

I was up early today and I was looking around the satellite for something to watch. I found a wonderful documentary by Natasha Gregson Wagner. “Natalie Wood: What Remains Behind” (2020).

71s7Ix3J+nL

It was so well done and I was so pleased that Robert Wagner’s daughters, all rallied around their father, and not one of them ever doubted him for a minute.  Natalie’s death at the age of 43 was a terrible accident, and nothing more. For those of us that remember Natalie Wood, it is a must-see.

The orchard is in bloom and it is beautiful. I think I will wander outside today and get some new pictures.

Enjoy your day!

The Friday Five May 22, 2020

The Friday FiveIt’s the end of another week and all of a sudden we have summer temperatures. I will not complain, I will simply enjoy the warm sunshine. So, here we go with this week’s Friday Five.

  1.  There is an increasing number of license plates on cars from other States. At first, this upset me terribly, but then I decided I will continue to stay at home, and follow all the directives when I have to go out.
  2. We now have three of our five window air conditioners in. Just in the nick of time! Today our temperatures soared into the upper 80’s and we really needed the cool breeze from the machines in our home.
  3. We do have beautiful fruit trees in our yard, but there was a regulation in our deed which prohibited us from planting any shade trees. So here we sit on a sidehill, baking in the sun.
  4. I was reading through my Facebook page and there was so much crap on it that I decided I wanted to get rid of a bunch of stuff. So I went through and unsubscribed from a whole bunch of stuff that I simply have no interest in anymore. It is my hope that I will see more from my friends and family.
  5. Lastly, I plan a quiet weekend. I am not one to really like it when the government decides to change holidays to make it convenient for them to go on a vacation. Memorial Day is May 31st. But due to government interference, the country is celebrating May 25th.

So that’s it for this week. I hope that no matter where in this world you are, that your weekend is happy and bright!

All in a Days Work

Today was go through the fridge day and determine what needed to be tossed, what needed to be cooked, and what needed to be prepared.

This found me making a huge garden salad, Jack made his cucumber salad, and I prepared everything so we could saute up bacon, onion and Brussel sprouts for our dinner tonight.

So that was also a lot of cutting up and chopping as well as preparing three meals for me and three meals for Jack.

Whew!

At least I have all the vegetables prepared for the next few days and I will just need to cook the protein part of the meal.

This is good because nothing will go to waste and I can now get on to other things.

I couldn’t stand not doing something about my roots so I ordered some color from a mail-order company. It should be here next week. I hope it comes out well because I am not sure how long it will be until I feel safe going to the hair salon. I will keep you posted.

Tomorrow is clean my closet out day, as suddenly I have an interesting problem. After losing 38.6 pounds, I have a closet full of clothes that are way too big for me. So I need to weed them out.

I slept like a baby on Wednesday night, and I am sure I will tonight too. Having the air conditioner makes all the difference!

Happy Thursday!

The Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. In a single sentence tell us something about your 40’s. If you haven’t reached that milestone yet tell us (in a single sentence) something about whatever decade you’re in now.

I moved back to my beloved State of New Hampshire and built a house.

2. Life begins at forty. Agree or disagree? Tell us why. And if not at forty, when?

I don’t know, I think for me, life began at 60! I absolutely love being in my 60’s! I feel I am a kinder, gentler version of my younger self.

3. Share a favorite book, song, or quote with a number featured in it somewhere.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails.
Explore. Dream. Discover.”…Mark Twain

4. A picture’s worth a thousand words, a stitch in time saves nine, back to square one, catch-22, on cloud nine, my two cents…pick a number phrase and tell us how it applies to your life currently.

Well, I guess mine would be, on cloud nine! Today Jack and I worked and installed the air conditioner in our bedroom window. I do not sleep well in a warm room and so the last few nights I have not slept well at all. Now the air conditioner is in, and I will be able to sleep!

5. Last time you drove more than 40 miles from home? More than 400 miles from home? Where were you going? Was it before or after this current season of social distancing?

The last time I drove more than 40 miles away from my home was when I went to the Glaucoma Specialist on March 13th. I saw her, saw my daughter, kissed and hugged her for the last time, and then drove home.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I sat down over the weekend and ordered gifts for Savannah’s birthday. This is the first birthday I have not been with my grand-girl and it is just breaking my heart! I know it won’t last forever, but right now it just feels like this blasted Virus has taken so much away from me. All the people and things that I love.
