New Years Resolutions

Yesterday I wrote about New Years Resolutions. I have made them for almost every year that I have conscious memories, and I have kept a few (such as quitting smoking 8 years ago) and learning to cook (that is now my biggest problem).

You see, somewhere between age 20 and today my body has given me up. In my 20’s and even my 30’s I could eat what I wanted and not gain weight, and my muscles had remained strong enough and flexible enough for me to perform the daily challenges in life.

Now, as I prepare to go into my 50th year, I find that although I LOVE to cook and eat, my body has stopped it’s ability to metabolize the food as efficiently as it once did. And my muscles? Well, let’s just say that I moan and groan a whole lot more these days than I ever thought was possible.

You see, I feel young in my head. Unfortunately the body, the keeper of my spirit is not helping me out any and thus, my dilemma.

So this New Year as I am sitting planning what my “Resolutions” or “Goals” should be I have kept in my mind the thought that I simply am not willing to go into middle age without a fight.

Thus my two Resolutions are this:

1. I will start Weight Watchers on Thursday evening. I have decided that I need the help and support of other people who are metabolically challenged to achieve my goal of losing the weight that has crept upon these soon to be, middle aged bones. I will go and sit there and announce “Hello, my name is Maribeth and I’m an overeater!”

2. I will exercise. I plan to set my initial goal at exercising two days a week and go from there. I still have a gym membership, and let’s face it, with all this snow, I should get out my skis, pack my back pack and get my lazy bottom out of bed in the morning and go skiing. I will not let my fear of last years fall make me crazy and keep me off the ski slopes.

So there we have it. Better, healthier eating and exercise. Fairly simple? I sure hope so. It sort of stinks that once you get to a point where you understand life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, your body gives out on you and you have to live on lettuce and a treadmill!

Ah well, it beats the heck out of the alternative!

What are your resolutions?

  1. I never make any resolutions for New Years. I do it all year long. I decided last Christmas to simplify gifts and all that I had been doing and killing myself at Christmas each year. I did keep that promise and this year was much better for me.
I need more sleep/rest than I sometimes get so I am working on that.
I am back at the gym, went hiking today and I have to try to not let the stress get to me. I want to clear out some junk in the basement and around the house too. Wish me luck.

  2. My resolutions are pretty much the same with yours, minus the Weight Watchers. I am also sticking to minimal, simple resolutions to keep it realistic. Good luck!

BTW, I don’t see any reason why you need to lose weight. You are fit enough for me. 🙂

  3. The gym is a good idea from a physiological standpoint. As we age, we tend to lose muscle and bone mass. Regular exercise will help prevent both-does not have to be heavy aerobics or weights-just regular “reps” types and flexibility/balance routines. Ask a trainer for advice!!. Love you.

  4. Whoo hoo ! what are you talking about ? What should I say I am going on the 65 ! I am an antique ! Weight problems fortunately I don’t have but I always eat the same things too. Rusty I have gotten too, at one moment even very much ! I woke up when somebody wanted to help me in the Bus !! I was offended, lol ! From this day on I go swimming almost every day and it helped to be less rusty. But still I don’t jump around anymore like a young kitten.
I am unable to do any resolutions I forget them immediately I have a short memory !
Have a very happy New Year !

  5. I wish I looked as fit as you. 🙂 My resolutions are to lose more weight and start going to the gym again to get some structured exercise in daily. Also hope to paint my bedroom a new color this Spring and some work on my basement to finish it.
Hope you and your hubby have a very Happy New Year!

  6. I don’t make resolutions 🙂 The suffering and pain I’m going through right now after the 50 pushups I did Saturday night have convinced me to go back to the gym. Never have I had so much pain from a simple exercise!
