Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. So, when did you last take a walk in the woods?

About a year ago, and the dackels scared me so much that I haven’t been back.

A stroll along the beach?

Last summer when I was down visiting my hometown for our reunion.

A drive going nowhere in particular in the car?

Not since prices for gasoline went over $2.00 a gallon! Now every jaunt has a purpose!

2. Are you sending Christmas cards this year? Yes.

About how many do you send? 100-125

Photo card or something more traditional?  Traditional card with a picture/letter inside.

How do you display the cards you receive? I put them up on the door to our front hall, so we can see them in the family room.

3. What’s a word you’ve heard too much of in the past week?

Sick!

4. December 13th is National Cocoa Day-are you a fan? Plain or flavored? Marshmallows or no marshmallows?

I love hot cocoa, but sans the marshmallows. Never been a marshmallow fan. Which is odd because my sister loves them and she actually makes her own.

5. What is something you do to help alleviate the hectic pace of the Christmas season?

I will sit in the dark, with only the Christmas lights on and marvel in the splendor.

6. Besides jewelry, what’s a favorite sparkly-glittery item in your home or closet?

I collect golden window ornaments. I have them from the Boston Garden Swan Boats, The Biltmore, etc.

7. Share a favorite line or two from any Christmas carol.

German Stille Nacht/Silent Night

Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,
Alles schläft; einsam wacht
Nur das traute hochheilige Paar.
Holder Knabe im lockigen Haar,
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh!
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh!

Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,
Hirten erst kundgemacht
Durch der Engel Halleluja,
Tönt es laut von fern und nah:
Christ, der Retter ist da!
Christ, der Retter ist da!

Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,
Gottes Sohn, o wie lacht
Lieb’ aus deinem göttlichen Mund
Da uns schlägt die rettende Stund’.
Christ, in deiner Geburt!
Christ, in deiner Geburt!

Words: Joseph Mohr, 1816
Music: Franz Xaver Gruber, 1818

English

Silent night, holy night
All is calm all is bright
‘Round yon virgin Mother and Child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night,
Shepherds quake at the sight.
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heav’nly hosts sing Alleluia;
Christ the Savior is born
Christ the Savior is born

Silent night, holy night,
Son of God, love’s pure light.
Radiant beams from Thy holy face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth

8. Insert your own random thought here.

This year I’ve done so much shopping online. It’s been difficult to get out to shop because of our colds, and the prices for mailing things are crazy. I’m finding that Amazon.com Prime is now paying completely for itself. We’ve watched a ton of free movies and I have had no shipping charges! Just three gifts left to buy.

  1. Your #5 is one of my favorite things to do this time of year. And I love Silent Night sung in German. English too-the words are beautiful and the tune soothes the soul. Enjoy your day!

  2. Love Marshmallows!! I’ll be making some soon.
I wish you were going to be here for my Christmas Concert, we are doing a wonderful version of Silent Night. I LOVE it! I think they are going to tape and I hope you’ll get to hear it. Love YOU, Mel

  3. Silent Night is one of my faves too! We are currently paying $1.50 a litre for petrol in Australia. I think that converts to about $5 per gallon.

  4. Love your answer to #5. I do that often too only after Christmas is over. Silent Night is always a favorite of mine. I recently saw the Candlelight Processional at Epcot with Neil Patrick Harris as the narrator and they sang Silent Night in German and English.

  5. I LOVE Amazon Prime! It pays for itself in one semester of school with the free shipping and better rates on text books. Our UPS guy checks all the Amazon boxes to make sure they aren’t mine first before he sorts them to deliver. LOL

  6. Homemade marshmallows…awesome. I love all things homemade, they are always so much better than store bought items.
I too love sitting in a darkened room with only the glow of the Christmas Tree lights, it is so peaceful.
