The Summer’s End

Hubby and I took out the last of the air conditioners today from our windows. This is always significant because it means that we have finally accepted the fact that the summer is over, colder temperatures are here to stay, and we need to close up the areas in the house that would leak out precious heat.

I’ll miss the air conditioner. I love a cool bedroom, with the air circulating, and most of all I love the slight noise that the air conditioner makes. Call me a freak, but the noise fills my mind and puts me to sleep.

Usually at this time of year I have trouble sleeping. Why? You’ve got it. No noise. I wish I could find one of those white noise machines that sounds like an air conditioner. I’d be all set!

In other news, I have switched clothes from summer to winter and I have found I have far less of a wardrobe than I one had. I thought turtlenecks would fit no matter what, but an XL turtleneck is far bigger than a medium. I can hear shopping music, can’t you?

Hubby worked with some of the last of the painting he has been doing, and he has picked the last of our apples. It’s sad to see what the hail did to our lovely apples. Some we can use to make sauce, but so many will probably end up in a landfill.

The sun is setting, with the silvery cast across the lake. The sky is a pinkish blue, with those tell take signs that tell me….

Yes, it is the end of the summer.

  1. That sounds very nostalgic ! It is a period I don’t like. But I had to laugh that you are missing an airconditioner, lol ! I think you must be the only person who misses the noise of such a thing ! The first thing I do when I go to bed in a hot country, I turn the airconditionner off ! I can’t sleep with the slightes noise not even a fly caugh ! The picture of the sky is beautiful ! what a landscape you have in front of your nose !

  2. Hi Maribeth
Jack loves white noise, I can’t stand it. We don’t have an AC in our bedroom, I can barely tolerate the fan! He does use a CPAP for sleep apnea and for some reason that doesn’t bother me at all. Probably a good substitute for loud snoring!

  3. What a beautiful sunset! I love the colors and the clouds! Wonderful picture! Enjoy shopping for new turtlenecks! Love YOU, Mel

  4. Exquisite sky and good photography! We are also experiencing fall. Had a cold front go through with temps in morning at 60 and afternoon about 80. Another will pass through overnight with predicted lows in the 40’s, high about 70. Chilly for us but great for the electric bill!. No turtlenecks for me-just a light sweater or jacket. Miss you. Carol

  5. What a beautiful picture, Mom! I think M. and I are going to look at some places tonight and tomorrow. Will keep you posted! Glad to hear that Greta is okay! That must have been scary. Did breakfast with Gram yesterday, and she asked that I pass along a hello to you!

    Love you,

    Mandy

  6. I know it can be a bit hard to say goodbye to summer time, but the again, the change of the season has it charm you know.

Beautiful, breath taking picture: so nice peaceful and colourful!

  7. Shopping music… When is there EVER an excuse to go shopping???

L is in the same place as you… IVF Aust are running a pilot program and she has dropped 2 and almost 3 dress sizes in 5 weeks!!! We went out on Saturday to “try on” some things… It seemed as though everything she “tried on” was purchased a few minutes later!

And your photo is simply lovely…

  8. Yes it is the end of summer, but you know summer is just one season and you have to enjoy them all. Look at that beautiful sunset picture, and remember that every day is precious!! My mom always needed a little white noise to sleep well. She had a fan in her room that was on all season long. In the winter she would just point it in a corner instead of towards her. We also sleep with the window open in norway almost all year. Just a little bit in the winter, but the fresh air makes you sleep better and the bedroom shouldn’t be too warm I think.

  9. Even if it’s the end of summer, that is such a beautiful photo!

Yes, I need to shop for some tops too. Can be hard work over here, everything is for really young people – or really old people, what happened of all the clothes for us in between….?
