Happy 11th Birthday Arnie & Anneliese

Can you believe this? The two doggies that I still refer to as my puppies, are 11 years old today! I simply cannot believe it! I know, stop being repetitive, but really, I can’t believe it!

14 years ago I traveled to Germany with Jack and brought home baby Greta. In time we found Greta a handsome German husband, Bernie, and together they created five beautiful puppies, two of which ended up staying in our home.

We’d actually decided to keep Anneliese, and Arnie had been sold. But on the day he was supposed to go, the prospective owner, changed her mind. The puppies were 12 weeks old then, and we were smitten. So, Arnie stayed.

It’s actually been a very special experience for us. When you have two sibling puppies from the moment they draw breath onward. You watch how they learn to play with each other, how they learn to share with each other, but over the years you watch their bond of love deepen. For Jack and I, we believe it’s been one of the greatest gifts we have ever had.

In due time, after being judged twice by German Judges, we decided to breed Anneliese. She had four beautiful puppies.

Arnie

Although I wanted to breed Arnie, no one was interested in him. Apparently they thought he was just another pretty face.

They are both healthy and happy and going strong in life. They cuddle with me at night, or if I am sitting in my chair. We have been blessed.

So, let’s take a look back with this short montage of their lives. Anneliese was the green collar baby pup in the film and Arnie the blue collar pup. Enjoy!

Happy 10th Birthday Arnie & Anneliese

Today my sweet ‘twin’ pups, Arnie & Anneliese, are having their 10th birthday! How did that happen? It seems just the other day that Greta gave birth to the first litter of Dackel Princess puppies! Now my little loves are ten whole years old! Anneliese is on the left and Arnie on the right.

Arnie & Anneliese (2)

I will try to find something wonderful for them as a treat today. After all, becoming ten years old, puts them in the senior doggy group!

However, I feel so lucky to have had these two wonderful pups in my life! Both are truly loving and amazing dogs.

It’s A Doggone Day!

The week came to an end, so I took Hubby and headed to the store to stock up on dog chow and food, so while I am gone I don’t have to worry about Hubby feeding the beasts.

The two lady dackels are feeling so much better and have returned to their energetic selves. Both have another 5-6 days on the medication, and we have actually found a way to get these big capsules down their throats. Hot dogs. You cut about a 1/2 inch piece, then put an X in the top of the hot dog. Place the pill in the middle and have another small piece ready. Now give the dog the pill/hot dog and follow it up immediately with the other piece of hot dog. Trust me, there is no spitting out of the capsule.

Have I mentioned lately that Lili is becoming a real delight? Oh it was such a rough start with that girl! Now we have her on grain free food and she feels good, and we have worked with her. She will now go out in the yard, and run around in the field while Hubby is working on the fruit trees. But she is always keeping her eyes on him. When he comes into the house, she follows.

If we let her out to do her business, I will put on my jacket and hat, and I talk to her and when she is done, she follows me too. The biggest thing for me, is that I cannot have her pulling me on a leash. I’ve noticed that since we have started working with her off leash, when we do use one she behaves herself!

And at the bottom of our list is Mr. Arnie Man. There is nothing wrong with him, he is perfect, comes when he is called, is in perfect health and is just a joy.

Well their all joys, but some days one is more of a joy than on others!

Babies & Dackels

My weekend was a bit on the busy side. Little Anneliese woke on Saturday with a UTI. I kept her comfortable until Monday when I brought her in to the Vets and got her a broad spectrum antibiotic. This is not Anneliese’s first infection, and right now we are trying to determine why she is getting them, and do what we can to prevent them.

Arnie, comforting his sister.

So, on Monday morning, Anneliese and I piled into the Highlander, and headed to North Sandwich, NH. We bumped our way over the roads, as currently we are in the middle of frost heave season. If you have never seen a frost heave this is what they look like.

frost heave

Thankfully, I am a New England girl and I know all about driving on roads that are heaved and uneven. I would imagine that people in California and Alaska, where they have lots of earthquakes, and of course Alaska also has the snow, would know all about it.

We had a short episode of rain, while temperatures climbed to the upper 40’s. While I was walking the dogs I noted the incredible mud and puddles.

We’re all on baby watch, as Mandy’s last days pregnant play out. I wish I could make it all go quickly for her, as I remember how impatient I got, at the end of my pregnancies.

Hubby has been briefed on how to feed the dogs and medicate Anneliese. There are plenty of frozen meals and he can fix his own breakfast or go to McDonald’s.

The last item I ordered for the baby arrived this morning. I’m so excited. Once I bring it to the hospital, I will put a picture of it here. It sure is adorable!

A Special Girl- Anneliese

I was sitting here today looking at some old pictures. There I was holding Anneliese 7 years ago, when we flew to Germany. She was going to meet her “lover” Isegrim. It was her very first mating, and I was so excited.

That breeding produced four healthy and handsome puppies. Two boys and two girls. All are still alive and well, and happy with their forever families.

But as I looked at the picture of the two of us, taken at JFK Airport, I realized just how much love I have in my heart for this small dog.

Oh, I love all my little (and big) beasties, but Anneliese now goes into the “special” category, where the names of Fritz and Shubi are listed.

Anneliese started special. When she was born, she came out kicking and screaming and I turned to Hubby and said, “Oh, I’m not keeping that one!” How wrong I was.

Anneliese by Janet

A few weeks into her life, this little miracle, climbed the fence from the puppy room into the kitchen, and then sat on the stack of newspapers, watching me cook dinner. When I turned and noticed her, I laughed and realized, she had decided all on her own, that she was staying, and I was her forever person.   She always cuddled and kissed me when I would pick her up, and if I was sitting down, she would snuggle up next to my leg and fall instantly asleep.

Her two litters of pups couldn’t have been more different. The first time, all went well, and she safely delivered her four pups right here at home, into my waiting hands. I slept next to the whelping box and we shared her babies. It was such a special time.

The second time we bred her, the only pup she carried died at birth. She’d had a cesarean and as she slept, I dealt with the death of her puppy. I sobbed and sobbed and then I prepared how to help her when she woke up.

Anneliese knew she should have a puppy and we gave her a small toy lamb to keep in her bed. She nurtured that toy for a few weeks, and when she had gotten her strength back we took it away. We kept her on tranquilizers during this time, and once she was de-lambed, we weaned her off the drugs, but it was so painful to watch this.

I spayed her shortly after, as I could not put her through that again. In my book she had done enough with the first litter and deserved to be retired.

Now Anneliese is retired and is my constant companion. She is such a delight for me. Here are a few of her silly habits, that I find so endearing.

  • When we let her out to do her wee-wee, she will go out onto the patio and stand at full attention, and bark like crazy, announcing that big bad Anneliese is on patrol!
  • She loves ice cream, and when she sees me having some, she races into my lap, where she sits and waits for her taste!
  • During her wait, she will look straight ahead, and then do a quick peek at me, and then back to straight ahead and then the peek, until I am done and ready to share her little taste! It is the cutest thing ever!
  • She still snuggles my leg and sleeps wither her leg on my lap.
  • When we go to bed, Anneliese commando crawls under the covers and then will snuggle my belly, where she stays all night long. I never feel alone at night because I have Anneliese by my side.
  • When I traveled with her to Germany, Anneliese was such a great little traveling companion. The TSA Agents loved her. I had to remove her from her traveling bag, to go through the screening machine, and when the saw her little panties, they all went “Awwwwww”.
  • June 5 006

She is the only one of my dogs that allows me to trip their nails, strip their coats, and trim their ears without causing problems.

When I have had my surgeries, Anneliese is always first in bed with me, or in my lap. She somehow just knows. So, my sweet little Anneliese has joined the special ranks, of dogs I will never forget and will remain in my heart, always.

    I’ve Gone To The Dogs!

Friday found me hunkering down to survive the cold. I woke early and at 6:45 AM it was -4 degrees F. Not even Lili wanted to be outside.

I came in and made coffee, and sat down. to watch the news and enjoy the heat of my cup of Joe (coffee).

The next thing I knew Anneliese jumped up and sat next to me. Probably out of a desire to suck up my body heat, but then, I don’t care. I love little dackel snuggles. She looked up at me and smiled. I tried to capture it because she has such a delightful smile!

    20160212_101207

Hubby got up and the next thing I knew, I had Lili in my chair snuggling next to me. Now you have to understand, Lili is a sweet dog and I really do love her, but…well, my dackels are my favorites.

But Lili, for some reason, adores me! And I’ll be darned, I really do love this dog. She is growing up, and she is getting easier to handle, and we can actually play with her outside.

    20160212_100431

Best of all, if we come in, she comes too. She doesn’t like being outside without one of us. In fact she runs right back to the door to follow us.

Lili will be three years old on St. Patrick’s Day. Perhaps it’s the luck of the Irish that has her calming down at last!

    The Wild Boar

Five years ago, I took a trip to Germany with Anneliese, to breed her. We spent a week with my best friend, Uschi, and we enjoyed our visit.

Like all good things in life, the visit soon ended and we had to fly back home. Both over and back, we got seats in Business Class, and Anneliese was the perfect little traveler.

    June 3 002

On our flight back the flight attendant handed out the Customs Declaration forms, to be filled out before we landed.

I had all of Anneliese’s paper work in my large carry on pocketbook, and knew if we were to be stopped I could produce the documents quickly.

I filled out the form, which asked if I was traveling with an Animal? I wrote, Yes. Color of animal? Well, her official color is Wild Boar, so that is what I wrote.

We landed at JFK International Airport in New York, and since I had all my bags, I just walked off the plane and right down to Customs.

The first Customs Official saw that I had an animal and sent me to the Agriculture Officer for inspection. The officer examined the customs form, and then asked to see the animal. So, I unzipped the top of her bag, and as I did this, the man took two steps back.

You see, he thought I was bringing in a “Wild Boar“!

Once he saw Anneliese’s head pop out he started to laugh! He told me why he was laughing and we both laughed together.

    TBT: Anneliese & Arnie

It’s hard to believe that Greta’s first babies are now eight and a half years old! I was looking back at pictures and came upon this one of Anneliese  (L) and Arnie (R), as 10 week old puppies. I had the puppy room all set up for Greta’s litter of 5, and they would come to the doorway and all line up and watch me as I cooked or made their meals. It’s amazing how fast that time went.

    Anneliese

Currently, my little Anneliese is down and out with a sore back. I’m trying to keep her quiet, so everything can heal. I’m also keeping Lili away from her, as I believe Lili is the one who injured her.

Anneliese is eight years old. I know she is a senior doggy now, although in my mind she will always be my puppy-girl.

    Sept. 15 004

Anneliese is a real sweetheart. Especially to me. She picked me out of the litter when the pups were born. Funny how that works. I was looking at all the pups and wondering which of Greta’s babies I would keep, and there she was, having picked me out. How lucky was that.

Every night in bed, we snuggle and she is the warm reassurance that I am not alone in the dark. Each morning when I open my eyes, she commando crawls up to me, and showers me with kisses.

This morning she seems a tad bit better, although she is still having some pain. In some ways it is good, as it helps keep her quiet.

I do hope she heals quickly!
